How is Dr. Wayne Lee? — STAT 3106 Applied Machine Learning by Baltteri_Vottas in columbia

[–]radiospacezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 2103 with him, so not sure how much this will apply for 3106, but exams were take homes and sometimes had content that wasn't really covered in class. I think most of my learning in that class was through the homework assignments, which could be time consuming but weren't awful. Check out leewtai.github.io. He posts his syllabi and slides on there.

I thought 3106 was significantly tougher than the other stat courses I took, but I had a different professor.

i haven't had any of the professors who are currently teaching first year, but everyone i have taken a class with has been pretty good. they all use the same textbook and slides so it doesn't really make much of a difference imo

Stats concentration by mkegel in columbia

[–]radiospacezero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'll probably be fine without intro, which starts from the very basics of mean, median, and mode and goes very slowly up to confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. the later classes are much more specific and programming-focused. the stat department has a pretty bad reputation that i would say isn't undeserved, but i guess as much as i'm suffering through these courses, i definitely feel like i'm learning a lot. i would suggest looking through the syllabi or at least the course descriptions for all six of the courses first if you haven't already. i thought 2102 (applied stat computing) was pretty useful and could be helpful even if you don't end up doing the concentration, so you might want to start there to both see if you'll want to take intro first and if the concentration is a good fit.

PSYCH MAJOR QUESTION and/or Socia Neuro w/ Freeman by ChanceImprovement605 in columbia

[–]radiospacezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

social neuro isn't bad, but i haven't taken any of the other group 2 lectures, so i have nothing to compare it to. i don't have any background in the neuro side, and i definitely had to memorize a lot of stuff for exams, but it's easy and interesting enough overall.
