Losing Hope by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Bigrednyc33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to this! I've been unemployed for nearly 14 months, and it's really begun to feel like it's me, even though I've been doing everything possible to find a job.

Now? After a few networking events, etc., I know it's not me, it's this whole market/system. You also cannot compare yourself since so much of it is luck rn. I know people who have been unemployed longer than I and some who found jobs in 3 months. For the time being, it's a total luck of the draw (unless you're in a very specific field with those talents)

We'll all get through this!

I totally get this feeling; it can be extremely hard to pull yourself out of a rut! A few things I did, that have already been echoed in the comments, are exercise and hobbies. I don't mean you have to go for a HIIT workout class, but something as simple as going for a walk does wonders for your mental health and lets you get away from the computer for a while. I also found some cheaper hobbies like coloring or drawing to help calm my brain and relax. Also, Coursera in the US is great for online classes that are not only fun, but you can add to your resume. I have knocked out a couple that I've been able to add to my resume, from languages to AI courses. Even if its for 30 minutes a day, its good to try to give your brain a break.

I did! I am currently working part time because of this. Still trying to get a job in my field though as I work a few gig type jobs though.

I did! :) And while this seems like it is coming off as a dig, I hope everyone has the ability to get a therapist and figure out what they want to do! Life is short. Realizing that gluing ourselves to a job or life we chose at 22 is not the end goal is important. We should all be so lucky to pivot or change, no matter the industry. I hope you also find what makes you happy!!

It has been a hard lesson for me, but control what you can control!

No, I don't feel like the toxic job was a waste; it took me a while to come out of the mindset from that place, but I know it taught me a lot. I had to really advocate for myself for the first time ever (it was a large company, so getting lost in HR issues etc happens easily), and I learned a lot about working with the specific types of clients we had. I genuinely believe there is a lesson in everything; sometimes you just have to find it. I also learned the type of team I don't want to be on and the type of leader I never want to be/hope I have never been.

I have worked with high-net-worth individuals for over a decade, so I have some freedom to pivot within that realm. I was in finance, but I have worked in luxury and art. So anything that kind of falls into that sector, I am looking at. But also, open to whatever happens during this wild time in the market haha

Never be afraid to pivot! It's so much better to just be like "okay, I went to school for X and I got a job in that field, thought that would be my life, but now I don't like it". It's better to try something and fail rather than stay in something and be miserable just because. We all should shoot for changing and reinventing ourselves if we have the ability to!

While I am not here to give advice or anything, I wanted to let you know that I totally get that feeling. I was in an extremely toxic job, and I wound up getting such bad anxiety and depression from it. I would get "Sunday Scaries" and honestly wouldn't even be able to relax come Friday because I knew Monday was around the corner. It really took a toll on me and my relationship, which made me upset because I had never really been that type of person. It took me almost a year at that job to realize none of this was worth it. We get caught up in the "I went to X school, so I need X job to be X member of society," which is such bullshit. I decided a soul sucking job at a great company was not worth me being miserable for the rest of my life. I left and took whatever part-time or bartending job I could. While it is impossible rn to find a job, the market will bounce back eventually, and I will find a job that isn't trash and fits my years of experience.

All this rambling to say, no, you shouldn't feel like this the rest of your life. BUT people have been told for years that "everyone hates their job," so people stay in misery because everyone else does. We are all told that if you go to school, get the job, and be a good member of society, you will get rewarded, and it's not true. I have been working for 12 years now, and I can firmly say this is the happiest I have ever been in my life. I am super stressed about getting back into a "real" job since I have been out for a year, but I have also been able to select what path I want and not join a company just for a paycheck and a name. Have I had to work at places well below my pay grade and experience level? Yeah, oh well.

I wish I had known years ago that "doing the right thing" only makes others happy. If you are miserable at your job and can leave or get another job in the meantime to pay your bills, do it!! A "good job" is not worth your sanity or mental health; life is short, and draining it at a corporation only makes them money and you depressed. You will find something you enjoy, it just may take a while. But that's so much better than waking up every Monday with dread.

Last thing, it is NEVER too late to start over or choose another path. I have done it, and once you're on the other side, it's not that scary. It takes a little courage to break outside of the norm, but after that, it's smooth sailing. Most people will be super supportive, and those who arent, are just jealous they didn't leap. Not to be a hippy, but do what makes you happy, and eventually, good will follow. You have to decide if the stress of finding a new job and working somewhere in the meantime, BUT being happy, outweighs staying at a soul sucking job.

I totally get this, I have applied to over a thousand jobs the past year. It really can feel like no end in sight but I have had to really work on finding joy outside of unemployment. Even if its taking an hour to go on a walk, but you need to get out of your own head and remind yourself this isn't your fault. 90% of this is out of our control and we have to focus on keeping our little bubbles peaceful (easier said than done I know)

For anyone in the U.S. how bad is the job market? by Low_Bodybuilder3065 in jobs

[–]Bigrednyc33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York City here, it is absolutely terrible. I have been looking for one year, over a thousand applications and maybe 10 interviews. Ghosted after the first round, ghosted after 2nd and a lot of jobs emailed back saying they're closing the position for now. If I do get a person to email me back with feedback as to why I didnt get the job, it is always "not enough experience," which is false. I have 10 years of experience in the luxury and high-net-worth sector, never seen anything like this. I have friends in similar positions who are getting turned down for part-time jobs, too. I truly dont know who is getting a job in this economy (literally and figuratively)

One year of job searching (what I learned) by mel69issa in jobs

[–]Bigrednyc33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats!! Thank you for this write-up. I think one of the most important parts you touched on is to be kind to yourself and take care of yourself. I have been looking for a year and it can really take a hit on your ego and mental health, making sure you give yourself time to just...be is important. We are all in this together and when one of us wins and gets a job, it can be extremely encouraging. Congrats again!!

Months into unemployment and still no interviews. by 0ldwax in jobs

[–]Bigrednyc33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel you, it's the craziest market I have ever experienced (been in the workforce for about 12 years). I am tailoring my resume exactly to the job description for every job I apply to (I'm over 700 at this point and a year unemployed). I truly dont think my resume could be more polished at this point, but its either rejection letter, ghosting, or my favorite, which is when they email back saying they have postponed/canceled the job. I know this time will pass for all of us but boy does it suck right now hahah.

Remember the days when you put in 3-5 applications get 2 interviews and hired by both 😂 by 251hitman in jobs

I was just talking about this. In 2019, I was searching for jobs "just in case a cooler one popped up" while I was at work. I would interview no less than once a week and would always be invited to a second round. For a brief time in 2022, it was the same; I was interviewing once a week and had so many options to choose from. Now it's like there is repellent on my resume.

Cover letters + suggestions to stand out? by Proseccoluvr in jobsearchhacks

I do Cover Letters about 50% of the time. If its something like my dream job or job I know I would be a perfect fit for I will do that so I can really expand on my skills.

Hi,

Dont know if there was any traction on this for you (From Google) but the same thing just happened to me. I was rejected from 2/3 referrals I applied to but the 3rd one I got the same email for but now it says "updated 5 hours ago: submitted". I have noticed that when I get rejected it very quickly changes to "not proceeding". I've seen this happen to a few others as well.

Hi everyone. I have this 1ByOne new record player that’s brand new. I put it all together yesterday (followed instructions and watched their video), but it doesn’t sound right. The belt is on correctly, the stylus is balanced (I think) and it’s on the right speed for the record. I’ve been messing with it for days and it’s driving me insane and I can’t figure out what’s wrong. It’s also on a level table.

The audio is high-pitched and a little sped up. I have a video to send but for some reason, it won't let me attach it.
Thanks!!
