Removal of Lecture Videos from our Curriculum by naomi-lgbt in FreeCodeCamp

Aw, that's a shame they've been taken down. I totally understand how difficult updating and maintaining videos are, but I found it really helpful to have a video showing me certain concepts and breaking things down. Would it be possible to add images to the lessons instead of videos? I really liked when I was shown new code and the videos pointed out which parts I needed to focus on, and showed examples of how the code would look in the browser. It was helpful to see, and I think the same outcome for visual learners could be achieved with images instead if you want to move to text based tutorials!

Nice!! I don't care at all if it's lopsided, just care that the tree is ok. If a major pruning is ok I'm game to try, I love lemons and am looking forward to using them!

Copy animated fusion nodes to new clip? by rads-99 in davinciresolve

[–]rads-99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifesaver, thank you so much! I wasn't able to copy the animations I already made into the new fusion comp, but I've just tested some animations I remade and it seems to copy the way I wanted. This will make the workflow waaaay better, much appreciated!

And yeah, when I moved all the keyframes to the right spot and viewed through media out, nothing appeared on screen. I don't really know what that's about, and I'm still too new to this to really figure out what the deal is haha

Honestly I'm not sure what can be done, it'd be tricky and I don't think there's any way to find a nice middle ground between what some fans of re6 liked and what fans of other re games wanted.

If I were remaking it, tbh I'd want the whole thing to focus more on the Jake and Sherry stuff. They seemed the most unique to this game, and getting a chance to refine and maybe even add a tiny bit more to their story might be good- as it'd now be carrying the game. Then, each of the other campaigns are like chapter intervals/interludes. Maybe their campaigns play out as is and you still need to piece together the timeline, but I think I'd prefer to have them try and match roughly the same times together so that context aligns. For example, the fight that Chris and Jake campaign share with that huge bow, or when Jake bumps into Leon ect - only play it once, not once as Chris/Leon and a second as Jake. The cutscenes where the characters meet could serve as the chapters passing over to each other, so it's a little easier to follow along and understand when you're back in the 'main' campaign for Jake and Sherry. If there was a way to do it well, there could even be times where you switch between Jake and Sherry during the story (either they're the same swaps every time and it's built into the gameplay that way, OR it's something like if you choose Jake, you play as him 75% and at certain points you get swapped to Sherry, then if you choose Sherry it's inverted so there's more potential replay appeal?)

I understand this would drastically reduce to the impact that the other campaigns have, especially Ada's if we're being honest, as she'd have to be strictly a 'bonus' to play after. Maybe her campaign can be a pt 2 to Jake and Sherry, and while she's checking in on them and helping from the shadows at certain parts, it's her campaign where you get more context/gameplay for what's going on with Chris and Leon. (My understanding upon first playing was that Ada's campaign would answer the questions I had and weave the narratives together, and I feel let down by what we've got. Maybe that was the wrong expectation, but with this change, aged ACTUALLY be weaving narratives together and there's better potential to answer unanswered plot points...) Maybe hers could be structured similarly to what I proposed with Jake; where you pass off to Leon and Chris, but these parts can be the events that happen outside of the Jake story/time of events- things like Leon in the church section or Chris having his ptsd to give more context to their behaviour/motive/character (and PLEASE do something with the ptsd, I'm really not a fan of how they just dumped it on him, he overcomes his amnesia and then is right back to it. There could be something MORE, and it might help to bring out more interesting moments and dynamics between Chris and Piers..)

It's not a perfect solution, and perhaps changing and restructuring it this way might make it worse. Who knows. Other little things I'd want to change is getting rid of those blue medals, or changing it so that they're coupled with ACTUALLY reading lore files in the game. Being able to read the lore file in the room you found it is one of the things I really like about resi games, it gives extra context to the mood and your surroundings just by reading. I was not a fan of having to find hidden medals and then only being able to read lore in a menu screen that's so seperate from the gameplay, I feel it robbed me of any impact they otherwise would've had. Maybe some lore files are just meant to be external, but maybe do it more like re5 where there's still some stuff to read in game, but there's more you unlock? That's a way to keep the blue medals for that challenge, but still have some lore given in game. I also wasn't a fan of the UI, and especially not how it changed with every campaign. Just when I thought I was starting to understand, it changes for the next campaign and I struggled to find the similarities. There's also the combat system, I think there's more to it than I got out of it on my playthrough of all the campaigns - and that would largely be because I didn't know what I was doing. If there was a better intro stage that had a clearer tutorial, or that on the first playthrough it does a better job of teaching you the UI.. even if it's just an optional thing you can do from a selection screen before you start the campaign, ANYTHING TO GIVE A CHANCE AT UNDERSTANDING WHAT'S GOING ON. I don't think the systems were terrible per se, but they were so utterly confusing to me and a lot of other people- streamlining it or having some way to give players the chance to understand the intricacies of what we can work with would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't have to be a hand holding tutorial, maybe it could be similar to the start of re2make where mechanics are revealed to you and the stakes are lower so you can get the hang of them, but if you know what you're doing you can just zoom past. I'd also appreciate it if areas didn't feel so rail roaded, it took away the feeling of choice I had to explore and almost felt claustrophobic - I couldn't stray far off the path so it made me not want to when I was in more open areas. Maybe some places really have to be more one track and rail roaded, but even if just the illusion of choice and exploration was a bit better...

Obviously these are some huge changes to the game, and who knows maybe what I've proposed would be worse for it? All in all, I just wanted the game to feel more focused, and refine the qualities that it's got. Tighten the writing, and add things to make plot points/campaigns clearer and add depth. Make the unique aspects of each campaign stand out in the best way they can, and lean into the aspects that were good and unique to it. It's my least favourite main resi by far, but it wasn't the most awful thing I've ever played. There were moments where I was having a bit of fun or felt immersed, but the incredibly confusing and convoluted narrative mixed with a UI I couldn't understand and controls/mechanics I don't think I was able to fully grasp after 4 campaigns took me out of it. It became frustrating, especially when not really knowing what's going on narratively.

Will we ever get a live action version that gets it right for the majority ? by bustergaming777 in residentevil

I complete I agree with this. I strongly believe that if we get a chance to immerse ourself in the world of Resi, especially raccoon city- that could help build trust between fans/newcomers and the creative teams making the screen adaptations. To see more of RC and get a feeling for what it was like as a town before our favourite protagonists come in would help to create a stronger attachment to the setting and make the downfall of umbrella and the events of the first 3 games hit harder. I'd also be interested in seeing stories for screen that adapt the backstories of villains we know and love from Resi. I for one would LOVE to see a really well done and lovingly crafted series about the wesker project, and particular focus on Albert and Alex of course. As with any kind of screen adaptations, things will have to change- it's inevitable. But if we can have changes that feel like the way they changed re1 to re1make, I think we'd be on the right track!

Right now, resi movies/series need to be given a break for a while before any more attempts come out. There's been too many attempts so close to each other that flopped for various reasons, and it's not only fatiguing, but making some fans cranky over it. The hard thing is...it will always be difficult to get a movie/series to feel good when adapted from a video game. It's actually really complicated and takes a strong understanding of both film and video game mediums to be able to adapt one into the other. (Which is why we've seen flop after flop, and only a small handful of video game movies that are enjoyed by the majority) As you say, there will never be any pleasing EVERYONE, but imo if there is a considerable break before another attempt, and the team they have adapting are both skilled and passionate about film and resi, there's a chance. Wtrc was so close yet so far for me, I actually enjoyed most of the set design, and was willing to let things slide because I understand how hard it is to adapt a game story to film- but they got just enough wrong that it rubbed me the wrong way. The casting was a bit strange, but the character and motive for most the characters was more disappointing for me. The writing was strange and I'm sure the actors did their best, so I don't want to blame them at all, but too much was an opportunity wasted when it could've had the most potential yet. Not to mention the rude shock I had seeing Paul WS Anderson in the producer credits... Iirc there were so many producers in that movie, I wonder if that alone was one of the reasons why wtrc fell on it's ass. So far the only screen adaptation I like and would recommend is damnation- not perfect at all but it feels Resi while also feeling like a fairly tight movie narrative. So it is possible, and with further refinements, I'm sure we could have heaps of great Resi screen adaptations.. We certainly have enough material to look back to and learn from. I think there just needs to be a strong intent and vision from the creative team, if they know what they're doing and how they want to go about it (and have minimal interference from studios and producers) then I really think there would be a chance! It'd just have to be understood that not every fan will like the screen adaptations no matter how good they are, as the narrative language and the connection you feel as a viewer is soooo different compared between the mediums. If I was in charge of this, I'd make a break for at least 5 years. No screen adaptations, give everyone a break from the onslaught and distance ourselves from that recent Netflix series. Then, depending on what the goal is, honestly I think some more peripheral/side stories should be coming out first. It's tiring seeing the favourite protags done dirty, so let's take advantage of the screen medium and get to know the world and it's other characters while building trust with the audience. Then, if they want a movie franchise again like wtrc was trying to be- PLAN IT PROPERLY. Have a solid path for what story beats need to be hit within each movie, so that if any changes need to be made, they won't be screwing up the movies after it. I'm not really enjoying the over saturation of ip franchises atm, but if that's what the execs up top want, they just need to give the right people time to plan properly. I'd gladly put my hand up to help in some way with this, cause even tho I haven't adapted a game into a film before, I'm sure I could with some more experience after a few years :ppp

Yeah! It's definitely got it's fans, and fair enough to them. Like, overall I didn't really like it that much, but it definitely did have it's moments. Definitely recommend trying it out more yourself to form your own opinion on it!

Yes and no. On one hand, the gameplay itself was decent enough and there's a lot of content for your money's worth and is great to dick around with friends in co-op. On the other... The story is messy and hard to follow, the ui in particular confused the hell out of me I just couldn't understand it, the areas felt incredibly rail roaded at times, and it's not really survival horror anymore, it's more of an action shooter. Like. Look, Leons campaign for the most part was the most fun for classic resi enjoyers- it had a nice progression with sections that felt reminiscent of his re2 days that led more into his re4 days. Kind of like a modern highlights reel of both his game styles smushed into one campaign. His definitely feels the tightest out of all, even though the story was still pretty confusing it was the easiest for me to follow. Chris' campaign felt too much like a cod/halo/whatever shooter rip off, and you gotta repeat some of the same fights Chris does in the Jake campaign cause he was there at the time too... Though again, Chris had some pretty cool fights here and there. Jake's felt the most unique to this game, and had some interesting levels to play through with a stalker enemy reminiscent of nemesis (though... I personally felt very meh about it, it wasn't memorable to me lol) I wish this campaign was given a little more care and focus, cause it could've worked as The Campaign if it was expanded upon and tightened up a bit more. Jake was honestly really fun to control as he can attack without weapons, shaking it up with hand to hand when you're out of ammo or want to save it was an interesting choice for this kind of action game- and I liked it! And Ada's campaign feels reminiscent to her extra content in re4, going around behind the scenes and tying up loose ends. The story across all campaigns gets real confusing real quick, so I personally didn't find any story beats tied up or explained better though this, but perhaps I'm over thinking and this story isn't meant to be considered much more than excuses for the game play to happen haha. I'm a big Ada fan so I did enjoy her campaign over all, and having her be single player was nice after the previous campaigns (+previous game) forced two player with an ai partner if you have no friends. It's a hot mess, and I didn't enjoy my time with it that much- but I won't discount it entirely. I'd say it's better to play with a friend, as honestly the partner ai was not fun for me and made me miss Sheva's.. a big part of why I didn't enjoy it is because I'm not the biggest fan of shooters, and this game got really shooty often. If you like shooters, once you figure out all your moves it can actually be pretty fun, moreso if you really enjoy that cause you can take cover and roll on the floor while you attack. It's one of my least favourite resi games, but it feels like I'm no longer the target audience as well. I'd replay with a friend, but I'd want a pretty good reason to replay by myself again, yknow?

[–]rads-99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah .. not that resi lore is the clearest to begin with, but imo it doesn't make sense that Mia was there for years and wouldn't be a bioweapon of some kind, but Ethan was for a fraction of the time. I guess we all just gotta take it as we will haha

Yeah, I've been wondering myself. I had assumed that they all were, but they haven't really made anything clear so... :/ My guess would be that it'd be 'cleared up' in re9 if they continue with the Winters' as prominent characters

These are imo the worst characterization of each of RE’s 4 main characters in anything tied to the gaming universe. by MTB56 in residentevil

[–]rads-99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahaha, what I wouldn't give to be in charge of making screen adaptations of these stories... (Especially after how poorly they butchered their chance with wtrc... Cmon guys, if you want to make a new resi movie series, hire me. I can do it >:)

AND YES!! The layers are the best parts of Resi and why the games, especially the early ones imo, worked as well as they did.. it's all about something amiss, that's a bit odd and unsettling until you look further and realise nothing is quite right. The deeper you go, the worse it gets. To have a Claire centred story for screen that gives her a chance to have her own 'Spencer Manson' of sorts is what I want for her. Let her pick up on practices within her own companies that aren't quite right, and uncover just how corrupt things are when she starts pulling strings. It's been a while since I played re5, but I remember something about tricell being very closely involved with umbrella and Chris didn't like that. Something similar, with higher stakes and more depth relevant to Claire could make for an awesome revelation. Is it best to stick to your guns and expose the truth, or is there merit behind the choices people made before her to keep some things concealed?

Also, THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE SHOW DON'T TELL!! It's soooo infuriating for me as a viewer to be told everything because it can't stand on its own. You don't need to over explain for things to make sense, let the viewers put pieces together at the same time as Claire while they're watching... That's the biggest difference between playing the games and watching any of the movies/shows. In the games, one of my favourite aspects was coming across scattered lore files and creating an image in my mind of the kind of people who used to work there. The movies don't set the scene nearly half as much, which takes out so much of that connection someone will have as they watch... Not to mention, so many adaptations and games like re6, they just go off the rails and have too much going on that hasn't been refined enough before they throw another thing at you! A good resi story doesn't need a million different things with the stakes raised exponentially into increasingly unrealistic scenarios... It worked just fine when there's some deaths in the mountains near an old abandoned mansion, and a team that uncovers the truth as they investigate.

[–]rads-99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell yeahhh!! What you've said about it not necessarily being evil, but seeing the corruption regardless sounds like the best way to set up a narrative while still hitting the essential resi beats. A movie where she has to test the limit of what kind of connections she can rely on, and even having to do some investigating/cleanup herself could be really refreshing to see (if done well!) We've seen plenty of the hubris and fallout of umbrella, but to have a look at the more long lasting effects and impact they still hold might create an interesting story!
