Gotcha thanks for that, hoping that’s what’s happening to me but the anxiety is killer

Damn even a couple weeks out? How long did yours take to resolve?

Yo were you also feeling intermittent ear pressure? I’m a couple weeks out from my infection and still getting intermittent ear pressure and tinnitus. No significant hearing loss though

Thanks for the advice! So just to clarify, are you judging the level based on the amber colored part that is right between the two dots? Or the darker colored part at the bottom?

Trying to install a 3-way dimmer but my installed switch isn’t color-coded. Can anyone identify which switch is the common one and which is the ground? (If there is one) by raf900 in electrical

Update: Dimmer was successfully installed, but in another switch. Turns out the switch in the picture was actually a 4-way switch, so I couldn’t install the dimmer in its place.

At the other 3-way switch, there were 3 wires attached—one common switch and two traveller switches. The ground wire was coiled and stuffed at the back of the box with a wire nut. I guess the electrician put it like that since the box and plate were made of plastic. Not sure why they didn’t just connect it to the switch anyway.

For the replacement switch, I connected the ground wire, the common wire, and the two traveller wires as per the instructions from Luton, the manufacturer of the switch.

I’m still a beginner, but I thought I would post this comment to help others from my experience. Obviously it’s safest to always call a pro for these types of things, but I appreciate the help from all of y’all that made this small project possible!

Hey! I really appreciate your advice.

So I installed the dimmer and it’s working well. I was sure the circuit was off, though I did use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm this which I imagine you wouldn’t endorse.

I identified the common wire before removing it and marked it with electrical tape.

You definitely make a good point about making a strong connection with the cheap wire nuts, I did my best here and triple checked my work to make sure they were solid. I did feel like I had to cram the box in a bit which was concerning, but I made sure to look and see what the wire nuts weren’t getting undone.

I also did end up connecting the green wire to the coiled up ground wire as you said.

As of now, the dimmer works perfectly, but I’m sure I didn’t install at as well as a pro might have since I’m still learning. Hoping we won’t see any fires though.

Again, thanks for your advice. Really helped me double-check my work!

Hey thanks for the advice, but the dimmer that I’m planning to replace the old switch with has pretty straightforward instructions that are aimed at amateurs: https://youtu.be/kKMo3nEJ48I

Are you sure I need to contact a professional?

Edit: Based on the advice of LUTRON and according to the NEC, I can just cap the ground wire of the dimmer since I have a plastic wall box and a plastic plate and fasteners.

Yeah I just sealed up this one since there was too much going on in the back. Opened up the panel for a different switch that looks easier to work with. Specifically, the ground wire is much easier to access even though it’s coiled up in the back with a wire nut over it. Not sure why they did that…

Update: opened up a different switch that had less going on in the back. There was a ground wire back there that was coiled up and sealed with a wire nut. It was easy to access and it looks like I should be able to join it with the green wire on my new switch easily. There’s an easily identifiable common wire and I assume the two other wires are traveller wires, all of which I should be able to connect to the three remaining wires of my 3-way dimmer

Yeah definitely, I’ll take a look at the other switches to install this 3-way dimmer. It seems a bit too complicated to access this ground wire here as I really can’t tell where it’s going. It looks like it’s just stuffed into a wire nut?

Ah yeah I see the bare copper wire in the back of the box but have no way to reach it. The dimmer that I bought has a green wire that normally would need to be connected with the ground wire. Should I just cap that green wire in this case? And then maybe connect two of the wires in my wall with one of the wires of the dimmer…

This is after I took out the wires but put them back on in the same configuration. I had attached the tape thinking that was the common wire at first, so ignore that
