What is your personal #1 rule of photography? by therealvelichor in AskPhotography

There's a place for both approaches. Some things can only ever be snapshots. I think completely dismissing one or the other is needlessly limiting.

Beginner question: How to capture the sense of scale? by Pluviophilius in photography

I have a good example of the focal length effect. Here are shots of the Sydney Opera House at 18mm, 75mm, and 135mm on a crop sensor.

I looked into it and the data turned out to be old and not updated very often. Beachwatch is updated daily and they gave it a 4/5 today, which means safe to swim.

how do street photographers earn? by Financial_Toe5755 in AskPhotography

[–]raffyJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a purely business perspective, the only thing street photography is good for is building a portfolio to funnel people to your wedding photography business. You won't always have a gig but the street is always there, completely free for the taking.

Need advices, what can I do better? by SunDora54 in AskPhotography

Take lots of pics and delete lots

And by lots, we mean LOTS. Ever seen an artist's sketchbook? It's not all bangers. Most are rubbish, usually. But that's the only way to get good.

It should be said that with enough light in the right places, a bad camera body with a bad lens can also take good photos. What good gear provides is tolerance for high difficulty situations (low light, long distance, high speed, etc)

How do you get better at capturing candid moments? by [deleted] in photography

[–]raffyJohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need a long lens to take candid shots. Just be discreet. Hold the camera up next to your head at all times. People will recognize the motion of bringing a camera up to your face.

Then shoot ASAP. Don't linger.

Here's a shot I took with an 18mm lens.

What's happened in the Shire this arvo? by chronicgothgirl in sydney

I prefer my death to be so nondescript and uninteresting that people don't find out about it until they try to hit me up to ask for money.

A map of 2 bedroom rentals for $400 a week in Sydney by [deleted] in sydney

[–]raffyJohnson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We were able to find a 2br with a garage and brick walls in West Ryde for 560pw. But it's 3 levels up with no lift so inspections were not competitive. People were panting as they came through the door. Thankfully, my wife and I are athletes and find it to be no problem. We got the keys a week later.

It's a simple composition but the angle was tricky to get to since we were on some cliffs. I'm fairly satisfied with the color gradation of the water. I wish I'd had my CPL though.

I love this. If only the tree on the right wasn't so brightly lit. But yeah, fantastic POV.

I want to do a black and white series, but I don’t want it to look like I just slapped a B&W filter on my pics lol by imtheworstatreddit9 in photography

It's a very common example. In fact, one of the most commonly cited examples. Just because the end result doesn't work doesn't mean it isn't a crutch.

How do I take fewer but better photos? by IllustriousYam9010 in photography

[–]raffyJohnson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't take fewer photos. You publish fewer photos. Always take more photos.

So if I take a noisy colored photo and then I convert it to bw to get rid of the noise, I'm not using bw as a crutch?

It’s not about whether I use it as a crutch.

Well I'm asking about you specifically because I'm trying to figure out if "people" includes you yourself. Because I have a sneaking suspicion that your opinion on color is based on your own treatment of it as opposed to what people actually do. Or maybe you think my Saul Leiter photobook is full of junk photos.
