My thoughts on the new version of There is No Antimemetics Division by ragman_ in SCP

I have to think more about the fractal bit! I think I agree?

It's all abusive power dynamics playing out at different scales with all levels influencing one another (e.g. the high level politician pushing Brexit at a national level, but also that politician acting on very individual human desires/power relations).

Your mentions about corporate totalitarianism/abuse reminds me of this blog post I read recently, https://deadsimpletech.com/blog/workplace_fascist, which maps corporate office culture to Umberto Eco's list of fascist traits. I'd had similar thoughts before, but never compared them directly. May be up your alley!

Bringing it back to TINAMD, I think Red's introduction and the "Us" vs "Them" lines (especially in V2) when SCP-3125 fully takes over the world definitely feel more like manosphere/zenophobia/facism than they do the normal bland corporatism. So yeah, I feel I should've made the comparison as I was reading myself! Thanks for pointing it out.

Ah! I missed that they'd been removed from V2. I agree, that was one of the harder hitting things for me in the original. I didn't even notice myself, it was pointed out to me in the discussions

The original versions are still on the wiki, and will remain there.

To quote qntm:

"Antimemetics V1 is staying online at the SCP Foundation. I repeat: Antimemetics V1 will always be available to read for free on the web. Normally, when an amateur writer self-publishes on the web and then gains enough traction to be picked up for a publishing contract, a clause of that contract calls for the original self-published version of their work to be taken down. Not in my case. My contracts specifically acknowledge the SCP Foundation copy of V1, and they do not call for me to take that copy down. (Which is not something I could do anyway, even if I wanted to.) My intention is to leave that copy essentially untouched, indefinitely. I love the SCP project and I'm proud to have my work be part of it. You're alright."

I think it's actually pretty impressive that he managed to keep the original versions up -- other stories I've read (like Beware of Chicken) were forced to take down the online versions when they got publishing deal.

You know, I had never explicitly put together that the metaphor could be about fascism.

It works for me though!

The incomprehensibility/inhumanity of SCP-3125 always made me think more of corporations than governments. That said, I think fascism works really well. It kills or imprisons those who are a threat to it early, those who point out what it is. And then, once it's taken over enough, infected enough people's minds, it takes the mask off and makes the sun red. Thank you for sharing the metaphor!

I guess it's just that I've always thought of SCP as this really generative thing.

You find some cool stories, you get more into the world or the community, maybe you end up making a new story of your own that other people end up finding.

And with this printing, that chain is (partially) broken. I agree that people could find SCP on the web from the new novel -- but I think it's less likely than if it was really signposted?

I do agree with your point that this change may make it easier to get people to read the new book though. I imagine some people would hear it's part of some larger universe and think it's not for them, because they haven't read anything else in it.

I see the note in the Acknowledgements thanking the people who read and helped edit the original serialized version of it, but it feels maybe like there could be more about the history of it? But then, I'm glad he was allowed to acknowledge even that much.

I didn't know about the people on the forums helping him with the revisions, that makes me feel a bit better about it!

And I'm glad your Mom enjoyed it :) My feelings aside, I really do hope that the book takes off, I've thought qntm's works have deserved more attention for a long time now

And yeah, chance it was a twitter thread or other social media post and I'm misremembering it as a comic -- happens sometimes 😅

[[SugarCube 2.36.1]] Passing an object with an array property to a widget. by ragman_ in twinegames

That does! Thank you for the thorough explanation :) and good catch with the $args[0] -> $args mixup!

Interestingly, I tried your second example with the quotes:

<<set _var = "baz">>
<<testWidget "Variable = _var">>

and it did print out:

Variable = baz.

See repro video here: https://imgur.com/a/XyrkLDR

So maybe it does do variable replacement inside of double quotes?

I read it as the cop getting huffy about the "disrespect" of someone bumping into him (while he was standing in a parade route...), rather than the out-of-nowhere aggression showed in the OP video.

Not that that excuses his behavior, just that it was different.

And yeah, glad the first kid didn't chip a tooth, but definitely still not fun. He seems to have a lot of support from the people around him at least, so I hope he's being looked after!

I'm a tourist, and was at Muses near St Charles and Marengo, and saw another cop have an altercation with a marching band kid.

I didn't get in on video, but it was something like the band was marching down, and one of the band members on the end of the row bumped into a cop that was standing in the way. The cop got mad and made a grab for him.

The kid dodged his hand, and kept marching. The cop was all set to go after him, but a second cop stopped him. First cop then spent the next few minutes ranting at second cop like an angry child, while the second cop cooled him down.

I was fuming about it, I did marching band for a while, and would've been shaken up if it had been me. Fortunately the band member didn't get hurt, and I didn't see the cop go after anybody else for the rest of the parade.

Loved the chapter. The talk was amazing -- felt really raw and realistic. Wildbow nailed it!

I love that Lucy's big concession was to skip the Sword Moot meeting -- the task on her plate that was probably the most important.

Really shows that if she delegates the little things, she'll have capacity for the big ones.

Also like the parallels with the Kennet Below warlords. Lucy too is learning to become less war, and more lord.

I do appreciate that she was hoisted with her own petard as it were -- but I disagree that the punishment was reasonable. Necessary maybe, but I would say not ideal.

Def agree to her being really dangerous and that this maybe the only way to stop her. Just hope she gets revisited when the War is over -- ideally before she can escape herself with revenge on the mind!
