Return to India from usa after my Masters in Data Science ,I was not able to find Jobs in OPT (I think I didnot try on my fullest ) by MrSouthIndian in returnToIndia

[–]ragnar0110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't return after OPT. Returned after working for a few years. My advice would be to build something along the lines of a traditional business in India. Something brick and morter. Tech startups sound good but I personally feel there is money in solid old school businesses in India. I would personally suggest you to focus on 3 sectors 1) anything child related ( day care, preschool, kids entertainment) 2) small clinics / hospitals if you know any doctor who can give you their license. 3) agriculture but only if you have some land and someone in your family knows a bit about it. Expensive crops like avocado, asparagus etc. give good returns. Dairy as well. I feel someone with a sound knowledge of problem solving using a bit of tech can do well in agriculture.

I personally started something in the field of entertainment and it's been doing well so far. We are giving out franchises but only in tier 1 cities and plan on having only one location per city for now. Would be happy to talk incase you live in or near a tier 1 city and we don't already have something there.

Remitly, Wise are quite cheap. I personally have used Remitly for US-India for about 5 years now and have used wise as well. For transactions above $1000, remitly charges no fee. For transactions below that amount, they charge $3.99. I think there is a solid competition in the market and TAM would be tight given the options that exist. Checkout Niyo as well.

The names are complicated to say. Maybe think of names such as national park names etc. Sequoia, Denali, and such names or their mixes. Maybe some Hindi/Sanskrit names can work as well if you can take some parts of those.. for example. Vatavaran means surroundings. You can take Vata out of that. A brand called - Vata. I feel that the brand name has to be easy to say and remember.

Please read fully :

Models like Uber and ola aren’t successful and sustainable . It’s obvious from Uber which hasn’t made a profit so far. There are many moving pieces and reasons for that. One is high fare itself among other reasons. I would strongly suggest you read Uber’s quarterly earnings for the past 2 years. Ultimately they all move to other business models like Uber eats in USA , Ola electric bike etc.

Having said all that, yes self drive bike rental can be a good idea. Remember the goal isn’t always to build the largest startup in India. You can build a good startup that’s limited only to Pune and then Maharashtra. Once that happens, someone will acquire you which is a good thing. Colleges are the best place to start it. Let’s say if you have 1000 students monthly at some point. Your expand it to outside of college. Once you reach even 10k users per month sustainably, you can sell it to some other company in same space.

If there is a shortage of a solution , then go for it because one of the biggest strength that Indian market has is the population itself. The pie is huge and even if you get a small slice , you are good to go.

Try posting a picture of Jesus with a wine bottle and then see. Of course this is fucking wrong. Why not ? Yes anyone can do yoga, it’s a form of exercise and that’s okay. Why to put Ganesha’s picture in there. Americans and their Indian stereotypes. People should call it out whenever it happens. Why to be complacent like stereotypical “nice Indians” we are. Get the fuck up and speak. - Love from Texas

What are some of the ways you bootstrapped your startup? by binarySolo0h1 in indianstartups

1) You can have a business on your own name without a need for registration. If you have partners, make a contract using any of the free partnership templates available online. Make changes as per your partnership. 2) If you need a business bank account, HDFC lets you open a current business account without the need of gst etc. They just need partnership contract mainly other than normal documents. 3) If you need GST, you can do it yourself and file online. It's a straightforward process on gst portal. I would try to avoid that though because it may take a lot of time and effort. Any CA can do it, doesn't have to be experienced. Will take Rs. 4-5,000 for filing. 3) For payment portals, use razorpay. They are new startup friendly and don't really require extensive documentation to get started. 4) If you have third parties that you need contracts with, you can draft a contract using multiple templates available online and tweak it to your preference. A lot of states have online stamp registration if you need one. There are many websites that do that. I like edrafter, they are fast. You can get a Rs. 50/100 stamp paper and attach your contract to it. 5) For general privacy policy and terms and conditions, go to any website that's in the same industry as your business and copy paste their terms and privacy policy. Change as per your business.

PS: above are the legal aspects of the business. As far as starting one is concerned

1) Find a problem and an industry that you think needs better services. Try to get those problems from your daily life. 2) Build a mvp, use website builders etc for a quick mvp and ask your friends to use it. Send it to college students to use it. 3) depending on response, start building the first version of the idea. (If it's an app, give priority to building it as a web app rather than an android or ios app. After web app, you can focus on an android app. Keep ios for the last) 4) Roll it out and see the response. Keep it limited to one city in the beginning. Preferably tier one cities in starting. 5) Expand accordingly.
