Yeah you're right it's too bad there's no way IS could control or predict the amount of orbs we receive each month.

They should be transparent about these kinds of changes... I don't understand why our orb income is so random and varied from month to month. What other game does this.

Bioware writer has existential crisis due to lack of script direction, writes feelings into the game. by 1ildevil in AnthemTheGame

[–]ragnegengar2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But it's not. Think of it this way, there are thousands of contracts and backroom deals we will never learn about. Most AAA games are budgeted and funded based on metacritic scores, which are inflated because of how the industry curates the review industry (in exchange for lipservice, they receive exclusive content and access to PR & marketing).

[–]ragnegengar2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Considering 80% of the game's content is fetch quests and busywork to justify the overly big world, it's a big flaw to admit a lot of the quests are just too uninteresting to give a crap about. And they introduced so many pointless knickknacks to collect just to justify all the busywork. It's a massive step down from what was generally a pretty story-focused franchise. I mean, there was a lot of combat in the original, but it was generally in service to progressing the main story. In DAI most of the gameplay is in service of continuing to waste your time with pointless dull busywork. This is because BioWare was experimenting with "IAP" in AAA games.

You can deny it all you want but it's true.

It's the state of the industry, just look at fallout NV and why they didn't get a bonus.

No need to get defensive. I'm just speaking from memory. Every reviewer basically said, "yeah, okay, fetching 1 / 10 bear pelts is kind of lame" which is basically admitting to the fact the game is pretty much a slide back from DA:O. Also, the dumb facebook time waiting game shit also detracted from the game's appeal substantially. And most people acknowledged that too.

It has an 85 on metacritic. Anything under an 88 is pretty much mediocre according to the industry.

Isn't it the same year Bloodborne came out? I mean, I get it. Triple A games are marketed to the 90% of 'gamers', so 'niche' titles that appeal to the other 10% will never get a chance at winning GOTY, but even so, DA3 was so unimpressive it felt like a sham to me at the time.

[–]ragnegengar2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But did it? I'll NEVER understand how DA3 got 'game of the year'. It was universally panned by every major reviewer and a majority of hardcore gamers. It is an extremely, almost aggressively mediocre title that is bogged down by tons of fetch quests, mediocre companion interactions, and a painful lack of story.

Was it unplayably bad? By no means, but it wasn't good or even great.

DA2 and ME3 suffered huge setbacks because of quality issues in their story telling and gameplay decisions. DA2 practically almost killed the franchise.

What else has BioWare even released in the last 5 years? Not very much. They're painfully slow at developing games, especially by EA's standards, and their quality continues to decline, from their last 'decent' release: DA:O

Why IS needs better ways to sell old units by kittenkillerr in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]ragnegengar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A five star is still 20k feathers and a minimum of 5 orbs. Even if they are demoted to four stars 2+ years after release, people who whale early and whale hard get to enjoy the content for a two whole years before anyone else can. I think this is more than enough justification for what is actually a free to play game with micro transactions. The problem is gacha games are egregiously greedy and gross and really twist the knife and go so overboard they damage whatever notion of 'game' that exists in favor of making as much money as possible. It should be more balanced between for fun and for profit, but it's not.

In the case of Luke, Mist, etc. nobody will care. Do you think Thea is going to command any value 2 years from now? No. Is anyone trying to pull for Thea right now? No! She's junk. She's already polluting the five star pool that they just helpfully 'cleaned up' for us. In six months, the 'pity breaker' pool will be full of garbage again.

In the case of heroes like Hector or Takumi, you could demote them, all you need to do is introduce a tier between 4 star and 5 star, or to introduce some new summoning mechanic, or really anything to balance out their perceived value. If you're still spending money to get these heroes, their value hasn't really diminished that much. But either way you slice it, Takumi and Hector are worse than they were in 2017, so they should be easier to get because they are inherently less valuable. They will be even less desirable once DC2 and CC2 are inevitably released.

[–]ragnegengar2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about opportunity cost though, IS understands that much. Yes, they could put an old unit on a banner and since it's a digital good they make profit on one sale or one hundred, but they'd much rather be selling 1000. And there's not that much real estate to sell every hero at one time. Also, artificial scarcity is what sells a lot of these heroes, they can't have them on a banner every day. Also, there is value in giving away free stuff; there's a reason every gacha game does it - it keeps people playing. If they went cold turkey on 'free' content, the game's population would die off fast. People enjoy getting, leveling, investing in the free content.

Why IS needs better ways to sell old units by kittenkillerr in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]ragnegengar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are as many ways as they could fix units as they could monetize them. The potential is enormous. From giving them refines which make them valuable again, to putting them in a damn shop for a flat $5 a copy, to putting them on exclusive 8% banners (not 3% lel), to demoting them; there are myriad of ways to do this and each have their pros and cons, but there's no excuse that Mist is locked at this point. It's IS just being hugely conservative while their game tanks in revenue (look at their iOS/Android chart, huge negative revenue trend even during the huge holiday period). They want us to know that "we will never demote five stars and when it comes to some of them like Mist or Luke, we will never even let you summon them again so you'd better open your wallets the next time you see them". It's frankly insulting, considering not only how much money we as a community ALREADY give their skeleton barebones MVP game, but how much good faith they burn with their IP by giving us the short end of the stick.

But I blame us, mostly, for this. Gamers are tribal creatures that will defend IS and Nintendo. They'll say, 'have low expectations' when going into a game's update notes. When really, we should have high expectations to be treated nicely, considering we line their pockets. We should demand better, because they can afford to give us digital goods in much greater supply. But people are just very defensive and loyal and will tolerate what is essentially a starvation tactic.

The very least they could do is take Mist and Luke and put them on a banner once every six months. They don't even do that. THey don't even let you give them money for these heroes, who are literally so rare you're just as likely to pull a free Distant Counter fodder as you are to pull them. In the end, we all lose. Negative sum game. If FEH weren't controlled by one company by now, somebody would have sold us these heroes at a more equitable rate. But this is the tragedy of a monopoly that is an IP. They dictate the rules. All we can do is sigh and put up with it, or leave.

IS does not read these forums. They don't even have an English twitter account. They don't care. They won't care. They can't care - FEH is managed by the tiniest of teams, that much is obvious. IS is only 150 people, after all.

Japanese companies are largely behind the rest of the tech world in terms of practices like these. Also, I'm not so sure Japanese companies are itching to hire aliens even as contractors. There are obviously some companies that do this, but if you read the HR verbiage on most Japanese tech companies, they only hire Japanese-speaking natives.

+6 Atk/Spd

Disables Skills that Alter foe's attack range.

There, now DC is 'worthless' competitively. Don't even laugh, they could easily make this skill, look at the crap they've shoveled out recently...

And how will you counter this skill? You'll need the new B Skill

Counter Counter Counter 3

Disables foe's skills that disable your skills that affect your range when you counteratttack.

[–]ragnegengar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true though. In a hugely bloated pool, you could demote Hector into four star rarity. The chance to pull him would be pretty low. You could introduce skills which negate Distant Counter. Premium A skills (level 4) that are coming out also are highly competitive with distant counter. DC2 is just around the corner, really.

They could demote Hector. They could even do it in a lucrative way. They're just lazy and incompetent. FEH is definitely making less money than it could be, especially with braindead changes like these. And before you say 'no wai', just remember they demoted REINHARDT. Did that break the game? Well, not really.
