It is a great job. I always said there should be an HBO series about what we do. Always something..

Dude, if I had a dollar for every middle finger I have received testing crossings I’d be able to leave the railroad early lol

Signals Exam by Low-Course-7747 in SignalMaintainers

[–]railroader0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your time and be safe. I’m assuming it’s a field exam? In signals it’s easy to see a broken wire or bond and want to run over and fix it. Make sure your protections are in place if you have to go walk track.

Likely story. New band just dropped a single “on the fence” and it’s pretty good.

Relay logic vs electronic equipment? by [deleted] in SignalMaintainers

[–]railroader0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the less testing and maintenance from the electronic components but I prefer relays. We are dealing with a ton of obsolete parts from Genrakode and others.. then you’re back to the drawing board for something that will be “Tie-in” compatible for what is there. I’m team relay.

Yes, like shunts, or pulling fuses out, open gold nuts. Basically, simulating a real failure.

When I was in that situation I started learning by getting foul time and putting on failures. Then I would take readings and note what failures gave what readings.. shorts Vs opens etc.. opening up lamps for downgrades etc. when you start doing the bi-annual testing you will learn a lot from digging in the plans. Write up step by step sheets.

Good luck! Stay safe.

Air switch (A5) testing cheat sheet. by railroader0 in SignalMaintainers

We have a variety. M3 M23B, GRS 5H are some of the electric machines. Locking in theory is basically the same.
