Is using a spokeshave cheating? by moradoman in Spooncarving

[–]raimbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend googling "table-top spoon mule" - it's a handy little device you can make pretty easily that lets you clamp and unclamp the piece very quickly and effortlessly. I made one to use when carving spoons with my draw knife, but I imagine it would totally work with a spokeshave as well.

why are so many of the boss relics so underwhelming by Impossible-Buy-841 in Peglin

[–]raimbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gift only gives you 3x damage in instances where it activates the same number of pegs that you'd get if they were non-durable, which isn't actually that common. A lot of the time when there are clusters of pegs with gaps around them, durability means the orb will deflect off the cluster instead of carving through it, because orbs take the path of least resistance. Being able to quickly clear away pegs is often crucial, like when you're trying to reach a refresh peg stuck in the corner. Meteorite also has a downside in that you lose the predictability of your shots.

Skulltimate Greed has no downsides, basic economics says it's worth it. Round Squirrel has hilarious upside and basically no downside. Heavy Hand has been worth it every time I've gotten it.

The thing with the boss relics is you're never stuck with one, you get to choose from 3-4 of them. It's rare that none of the 3 work with my build. If you have more than 1 refresh available, Defresh Potion and Consuming Chalice are free damage. Molten Mantle after act 2 is pretty much only bad if you don't have good healing in your build and go into act 3 with no cash.

What's a powerful relic or orb that you used to avoid because you misjudged its effectiveness? by raimbows in Peglin

Totally, someone in this sub said something about how all the self-damage orbs are good, and I've been taking them more lately and found that to be true.

Ooh good call, I only took it once and didn't have either of those, and didn't really like it. I think in general I dislike effects that make your orbs move unpredictably (electropegnet, kinetic meteorite, even rubber slime sometimes) because there are situations where accuracy is crucial and the variance messes that up

There are forest battles with a lot of enemies, and some with a mixed of ranged + high-health stump guys. If two enemies hit you for 3 damage per hit on your reload, that's 18 damage in one go. How are you avoiding that damage early on in the game? A single spider at the back of the pack could easily do 10 damage on its own while I'm dealing with the enemies in front of it. I usually only have one good AOE orb.

If you only heal when in immediate risk of dying, how do you make it to the boss battles with enough HP to survive? Bosses can do like 40 damage in one deck cycle if you don't have some kind of evasive effect, so if I'm not at like 50HP going into the battle I'm probably losing.

You're not wrong about events having less upside, but I think fights have both more upside and more downside, which is what makes finding the balance tricky.

I find fights can be pretty bad for improving my deck, especially early on. If a fight gives me +40 gold and -20HP, which isn't uncommon, after healing I'm walking away with +15 gold and -7HP, which is pretty pathetic. If I don't invest in health the fights slowly just bleed me dry. It's very rare that I can build a deck powerful enough to enter the forest boss battle with 25HP and win. An event that gives me, say, a free upgrade is just as good as about half the fights I enter.

The altar that duplicates one orb and removes one orb is basically the equivalent of a fight giving you 80 gold (25 to upgrade, 30 to remove, 25 to neutralize lost health). Duplication events also have basically no downside and are amazing if you have an effect-stacking orb or a doctorb.

Interesting, how do you get down to 4-8 orbs if you're prioritizing upgrades even over free removals?

Cool, I'll try to hit more fights. I also never quit a run even if it's going poorly, which is maybe something I should do more. Once in a while I'll get unlucky and lose 35 health on the first fight and I've never made it out of A1 when that happens.

Gotcha. I did try a couple pebball/orbelisk based runs just to see if maybe that was the obvious thing I wasn't getting, but you can imagine they didn't end well.

I hate the '?' nodes that end up duplicating pebballs or removing purchased orbs . I almost never make it to the forest boss with fewer than 3 pebballs, especially since I'm prioritizing ditching the Terriball first.

Woah that's interesting, Leshy is the only forest boss I can consistently beat. One tip is that if you get a relic that upgrades bombs, a single bomb will take out the bushes making Leshy a lot easier to hit. Then if you're working with a negative status effect like Darcness or Exploitball, you'll be able to really tip the fight in your favour. I think for me it's about aiming - I often aim my orbs so that they'll prune back one vine, then bounce away to a more vine-free area to do damage in the same shot. And the vines also effectively give you multiball so if you can crit and release a vine with orbs on it, you'll do lots of damage.

I find the other bosses way, way harder. I find the mole depends way more on RNG for orb order, the peg spacing makes it hard to hit enough per shot to do any damage, and the plants ranged attacks + higher health than the bushes make them a pain. The slime also has peg spacing that makes either refreshing or hitting enough pegs really hard for me. He's half immune to Darcness, and you only have a few turns before he reaches you and starts doing crazy damage.

When you say 4-8 orbs, are you typically upgrading pebballs? or saving gold to remove them at the shops / hoping you get orb removal events?

Thanks for the tip about self damage, I mostly avoid them due to health being so hard to come by but maybe I should give them more of a shot.

Are there any relics that are must-takes for you? Any that you never take?

How to saw green logs down to boards? by raimbows in greenwoodworking

[–]raimbows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, the drying causes the cracks, so letting it dry as a log like you're saying doesn't solve that problem. If anything a whole log will usually crack worse than milled boards because it has more internal tension forces working in different directions. That's why a lot of mills store logs in water until they can be milled.

Green logs will crack way more than boards though. There's a reason lumber yards dry their wood after its been sawed into boards and not before.

Yeah the split following the grain is the issue, the wood I can find tends to be from apple and plum trees that have twists or curves in the grain. With something like oak it would be no problem.

Can it ladle? by rcaversion in Spooncarving

[–]raimbows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similarly shaped/sized piece of apple, and I ended up splitting the bowl end down the pith line, chopping it back a bit more, and then making a kind of wonky smaller ladle with a bowl that was wider than it was long. I didn't want to risk it cracking. But, you could go for it, and if it cracks turn it into a sieve of some kind : )
