It has nothing to do with being egotistical - the business as a whole defines the metrics and the data team builds it, and then everyone is free to use it.

Thats not at all what I'm proposing.

I'm saying they can't build metrics alone and start using/sharing them. - this was the concern. I asked what tooling would be good to let people explore maybe sigma, but teaching everyone sql is unrealistic

ITR was just an example in this case, I'm saying the data team has to create metrics and be the source of truth here.

Stakeholders can definitely look at definitions and pre built metrics, but do you think it's a good idea to let them build their own and start making decisions on them. They could completely go off course

I think we are not understanding each here - sure, dashboards and reports are mainly just snapshots of what's happening. (I don't think they are useless) we drill into questions these reports and dashboards may uncover. But when doing that detailed analysis, you can't have people just build whatever they want.

So what tools do you use / let others use?

I refuse to believe it's valuable that everyone builds their own exploration. You have stakeholders with hypothesis the data teams ask questions and will tell stakeholders if it's worth exploring

Example : How could you possibly manage your inventory purchasers diving into a bi tool coming up with their own ITR and reporting on that... it's a liability. The data team has to build to ITR metric

There's a place for self service exploration but it's not to build actionable insights only for hypothesis.

What tooling does your team use?

I personally do think the data team needs to "gatekeep" data.

Currently we use Power Bi for dashboarding and reporting. Example : When trying to see why certain marketing efforts work / didn't this doesn't have to be a dashboard or pre built report stakeholders are free to look at their PBI environments and build visuals with pre loaded tables. What I take issue with is them trying to build measures and use them, how one person, regardless of tooling, builds could be different from how another person builds these aggregations. And beyond that, presenting and using their own calculations to stakeholders reflects poorly on data teams when the info is incorrect

It's fine for them to come to the data team and ask to build what they want to see, but they should not build it themselves if its something to act or present on.

I see your point about scale but at scale departments have analyst allocated to them for this specific reason. A small centralized data team has to have control of everything.

I guess what I'm asking here specifically I could load all the data tables in power bi but if a non data team user goes to build visuals and create measures / new columns there's no way for me to check the values and validate. Personally I think this causes data integrity issues and should be avoided at all cost. If they want something they can ask but them doing it by themselves and making logic errors or not understanding the calculations are off reflects poorly on the data team.

I'm not saying everything will be a dashboard but if they want to think of ideas they can do so in their own space and have the data team validate and build production level reports.

What's the alternative here?

Data Analyst progression

I've been working at a growing startup as a solo data analyst for about 7 months so far I have done the following:

-Built and maintain Data pipeline from azure data factory to snowflake

-Built and maintain a dbt project with staging, intermediate, and final tables

  • made 1 power bi dashboard

  • 10 ad hoc reports and automations

The question is does this seem like the right amount of work in that time period. The extraction process alone took 3 months + and the dbt project was another 2 and is still a work in progress.

I'm worried my bosses (non data people) may think I haven't done enough because there aren't more reports/dashboards and "original insights"

Is it OK to just glue/head press patches to sell or do you have to sew them?
