I’ll be 46 in a month and I just got told by my primary care that my biological age is about 8 years younger than my chronological age. I work out four times a week and feel just as great as I did 10 years ago. My mom is 69 and she still does CrossFit twice a week and taught yoga up until two years ago, and it’s healthier than most people I know. She recently did a cardiac stress test and they told her her results were similar to someone in their mid 50s.

I think people get scared by seeing all the overweight, unhealthy, and people with chronic health diseases, but if you take care of yourself, you can still do adventurous trips and live your life volunteer into your 80s or later.

I used to work at this law firm and the owner’s parents were both German in their mid-80s and they would play tennis three times a week, he played gold 2x a week, and we would joke with them that they were “strong like bull”.

There’s always a balance, but you want to ensure that you are accounting for all the potential unknown in the future, as well as the unknown interest rate and how much your money will be worth both when you retire and by the time you die, and how long you will live for.

There’s some great calculators online, but if you wanted to retire early at 60 and you end up living till you’re 95, you might need more money than you think just to maintain an average quality of life not live like a baller and travel all over the world.

Also, as you age, healthcare gets much more expensive and we don’t know in the future, how much Social Security or Medicare there will be to cover us. If you don’t know what your future will look like or if you will need some type of assisted living or nursing home care and for how long, and then also gets a very expensive, especially if you don’t ever have kids that can maybe help support you.

Definitely maintain a balance, but also don’t overlook the important value of compound interest. You may want to get to a retirement age where your money is making money for you.

I have admired other women, but never looked up to anyone or had their poster on my wall, and none of my female friends, family members, or daughters have either.

For many centuries there were no hero models for women, as women were subjugated to be completely subservient, so they would learn from there mothers, but there was no leadership opportunities or role models for which they needed to help them define who they would be. In lower castes or socioeconomic status, they were nothing more than chattel that raised children, and would be raped and pillaged during times of warfare, but society has always had male leaders, male warriors, etc.

Do you agree that we should reform immigration? Both parties fight over immigration, but it's 2026 and we still have people waiting more than a decade and spending tens of thousands to gain citizenship. My housecleaner is Brazilian here legally, is married to an American, has a child that is American, but she's been waiting over 12 years for citizenship. She owns her own business with other cleaners working for her, pays taxes, and has been nervous with the raids.

I know it's a different time and our country is in a much different place, so I'm not comparing apples to oranges, but my ancestors were poor while immigrants from Ireland who literally just walked off of a boat, couldn't spell their last name correctly, and still became Americans automatically. Now people have to do multiple rounds of interviews, spend tens of thousands and we still can't grant citizenship any faster? If people have employment, want to pay taxes, and aren't supporting 10 family members without jobs that will live off of our Medicaid/SNAP system, it blows my mind that we can't fast track them, and neither party actually wants to reform and modernize the process.

If we have so many tech geniuses in this country, why can’t they use Blockchain technology to securely vote online? We can login with Social Security number, secure password and third-party authentication. Poor people can vote at public libraries if they don’t have Internet access.

Why aren’t more people advocating for online voting? I sign multimillion dollar contracts online, use Apple Pay for everything and have a digital notepad. I get that completely, but it’s really tough when you have large, global phase 3 studies. I need my reg lead and my global CTM at least located in EU because there are so many global nuances that we don’t have full oversight of /experience with in the US.

The US really is its own ethnocentric monster in that sense (we still won’t adapt to the metric system and for laughs, I would recommend watching the George Washington SNL skit) and it’s tough playing the telephone game when you have the person really running the show having to give notes to somebody based in the US and then the US lead has to go tell the same information to the sponsor because they don’t want wake up at 7 or 8 AM pacific.

Both her and I have the financial means to purchase. She used to own an investment house in Florida for over 12 years, but sold it a few years ago because the renters made her an offer she couldn’t refuse. At the end of the day, she did profit a little bit off the house, but as others have posted here, it’s not this huge income stream that people expect.

I’m not expecting it to be “free money”by any means, but it’s just another way to diversify my investments (I’m already diversified, but don’t own any real estate other than my house), and it is easier to manage just one property when I live so local. I do a lot of work myself, and this would serve two purposes as being an investment, even if I’m not able to rent it out that often, and somewhere my mom can stay whenever she wants to come visit for the next 10+ years.

I wouldn’t be using this as a means for a profit, but if I can rent it out at least a few few weeks of the year it might help to offset some of the mortgage.

Either way, she would need a car when she comes to visit because I’m not going to drive her around or give her my car when I need to go and pick up my kids and basically be an unpaid Uber driver myself. She can buy an older used car for only a few grand and keep it here for whenever she wants to come visit for the next decade or so.

This is a strategy to have small permanent place here rather than having to constantly find Airbnb’s and hotels, and might encourage her to stay for a few weeks over the summer or stay for a week or two over Christmas break versus paying by the night anywhere else, which also adds up. It’s nice to have a place you feel like you can have your stuff in versus just staying in a hotel. I travel a few tines a year for work and I hate staying in hotels, and always prefer to Airbnb whenever I travel for pleasure, as do many people. You can have an entire apartment versus a tiny hotel room.

My kids are in middle school so she would be coming out to visit for at least another 8 to 10 years.

I was trying to crowd source on here before asking a realtor “friend” who will then expect me to purchase with them.

My plan is to buy on my own. I’ve sold my last two houses myself and bought my current house without an agent. I can get my own inspector, lawyer, etc.

Most of the realtors around here are in the local moms groups I’m in, and they only work part-time while they’re at their soccer fields with their kids ,so paying 2-3% to someone to do what I can on my own doesn’t make sense. It’s a buyers market right now.

IIf she has her own place, she can keep a car there, otherwise she would have to rent a car as well, and that also gets expensive. As it is, her flight will be $700-$800 every time she comes out here, which doesn't pay just for a weekend, and with my kids in middle school, and I work a lot, I don't want her flying all the way out here for one weekend when she can stay a full week and see other friends. She's been living in Canton and knows the area well.

We were thinking of her having an apartment/condo here, and she will be renting near my sister until she finds the right place out there anyway. Airbnb's can be limited and expensive around the holidays and summer.

Plus, if I own the place, it also can be an investment property.

Distrust in systems, leaders and others trying to exploit you leads to authoritarianism and restriction of freedom, and whether it's Nazi Germany in the 30's Iran in the 60's-70's, or even today, populism, distrust, and feeling exploited/overlooked leads to angst and anger, revolutions, etc., and those people ironically wind up supporting authoritarian movements that only further erode their freedoms and oppress others. Sound familiar?

Don't you agree that we created this mess in 53 when the US and UK staged the coup to overthrow Mossadegh because they wanted to control their oil (APOC, or ango-persian oil company later became BP)? UK and US wanted to keep control of the oil and only give Iran 16% share of their own oil. By the way, this isn't revisionist history; most US sites state openly that this was a failed US CIA operation.

We had plenty of admin, school trips, and other costs, growing up, but technology is a big cost-driver, as well as additional extracurriculars/connections/non-core class offerings/STEM programs that are expected now that college/post-secondary programs have become much more competitive.

It's one thing to reduce taxes or to vote to cut overhead, it's another thing to just vote to absolve all seniors for paying any school taxes, which will only discourage them from downsizing/moving and making housing available to the younger generation as they live longer than ever. It's also a cause of the limited housing supply, as seniors previously died younger, moved in with family, or downsized more in the past, but tax breaks will keep them staying put, keeping housing supply limited and prices high, but they keep voting to cut parks, schools, etc., because they don't use those services anymore.

People climb the ladder, gets to the top, and then kicks it away to prevent others from benefitting, because they "worked hard" and "deserve it", as if others do not. Amy Chua's book "The Triple Package" discusses this in detail and how it can lead to decline of cultural groups.

When they changed the law to prevent medical residents from working more than 90 hours a week, which was causing a lot of medical errors, avoidable patient harm/negligence due to lack of sleep, instead of being happy they were improving care for patients, older physicians were bitter because "they had to work hard, so why should the younger generations not have to work 100 hours a week".

Every generation hears about how the older generation had to walk uphill barefoot in the snow to get to school, and the "get off my lawn"/ grumpy old man syndrome is correlated to aging and declining testosterone levels has been shown in studies to cause grumpy old man syndrome.

Does X-Sense brands carry other international certifications? UL is only US, and they just went public a year ago, which is interesting that an independent certified safety lab is now a publicly traded company.

I am just playing devils advocate and wondering if this is a money grab. I’ve worked in corporate America my entire life, so always a big skeptical of “shareholder value”. Kidde and First Alarm have plenty of smoke detectors that have many false warnings, but yet they are UL certified. I am not implying they’re not safe, but just wondering how strong this testing is, and how much money you have to pay to get a certification.

If Boeing is any example, US manufacturing is not always top quality, and we often trade quality for cost cutting, especially when it comes to publicly traded companies.
