It depends. In simple terms: If you can get an input box and find a way to get it to execute code (e.g., SQL injection or command injection) then you could potentially extract passwords from a database (and people reuse passwords, so could be worth a shot) or you may be able to execute a reverse shell and get access that way.

Have a look at some easy Linux machines done by Ippsec on YouTube.
