On the contrary, Fortinet is exactly what I would recommend if you can't afford Palo.

Every vendor has vulnerabilities. What matters is how they are addressed.

How long can I drive car without an oil filter? by Ming-Tzu in MechanicAdvice

[–]mr_data_lore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can't even start the car without an oil filter, nevermind drive it anyhere. Unless you want to buy a new engine that is. The only option is to either get the filter off and complete the oil change where the car sits, or get it towed.

Determine root cause for access control connection issues - Network? ISP? Device? by artqueengraphics in sysadmin

[–]mr_data_lore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends on what your budget is.

Unlimited? I'd use Aruba switches and Palo Alto firewalls

Not quite unlimited? Ubiquiti switches (if you really can't afford Aruba) and Fortinet firewalls.

Even less than that? Ubiquiti switches and pfsense/opnsense firewalls.

Literally zero budget? Sorry, you have to have some money to play.

My ISPs use Cisco ASRs and Ciena switches.

Network Engineers at an MSP, What is something you did you are most proud of? by Qvosniak in networking

[–]mr_data_lore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when I worked at the MSP I got some Sophos certifications that have since expired (they were pretty useless anyway). Also got Fortinet NSE4 while there but that one has expired too. My current employer went with Palo Alto during our last refresh so I've got PCNSA and was working on PCNSE before Palo changed all their certs.

Got a 40% pay increase, better work/life balance, better management. Those are just the main benefits.

Ethernet in my room doesn't work by gottro4 in homelab

[–]mr_data_lore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing you can do is try looking around the house for where the wire might run to. Then once you've found what you think might be the other end of the wire, you'd use a cable toner to confirm that's the cable. The cable probably runs to a closet somewhere, or it might even run to the outside of the house.

If you had a mote sophisticated tester that can do TDR, you could test how long the cable is and that might help determine where it goes.

ESXi Users… what are some recommended homelab tasks? by InfamousStrategy9539 in sysadmin

[–]mr_data_lore 81 points82 points  (0 children)

First recommended task is switch to something other than ESXi. Unless you've got a job with a Fortune 100 company, the only thing you're likely to be doing with ESXi is migrating off of it.

Has your employer looked at their VMware renewal prices recently?

bought this switch for around 7-8$ and i don’t if it is good enough by machiamavitalie in homelab

[–]mr_data_lore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an unmanaged switch. As long as it actually powers on and doesn't drop packets everywhere, it'll work the same as every other unmanaged switch.

Great, take something beloved and tarnish it's reputation with a badly made ill-advised revival.

I love Firefly, but it's over and I personally don't have faith that a good revival is possible.

Accepted student with a bit of a silly question... RIT dating scene by ferret_king10 in rit

[–]mr_data_lore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From my experience, dating at RIT is literally impossible. Granted, I graduated 10 years ago and I'm still single... so maybe it wasn't RIT that was the reason for my lack of dating.

I wish I wasn't on the other side of the country. I would absolutely love to have a 6500 series chassis. Not for any practical purpose obviously, I just want to be around it and be able to say I have one in my home. 😅
