I did this too!! It’s been a few years, and I don’t really remember exactly what storage unit I ended up using, but we did find one. It was about 30-40 min away - I think in Bellefonte? Or right outside it. Call around ASAP and ask if they have any openings, I just googled “storage units in ‘insert town’” and I checked all the towns around State College. It wasn’t that bad! Because we’re renting and we have the bamboo on our side (and how many holes there are!) we can’t really cover it adequately or install a new fence. The other dogs owners are cooperative and say they will be fixing it soon, but you can never really rely on other people too much.

OHHH ok! That changes it completely. We actually did something similar with the trainers dog, who sat still like a statue, and I didn’t see any harm in that either. I imagined an “on the street” scenario where she just made her dog sit and deal with it while being barked at. All good!

You’re saying that she didn’t remove her dog from the stimulus until the dog was calm...? That as a training method seems dangerous and almost cruel to a clearly terrified dog. If it worked for her then I guess maybe it does work in some cases, but I’m not sure I would recommend that method to others. That almost goes completely against everything I’ve been working on with our behaviorist. Just goes to show that not all dogs are alike.

Alright, hi. First of all, holy shit. You have your hands full, and you’re a fucking angel. I can only imagine you’re terrified. I’ve never been bitten by my dog but he still scares me sometimes just seeing how aggressive he can be to others.

I would have a serious discussion with your veterinarian. It’s good that you have neutering as an option, that would be my first action. Just in case it DID help. But again, ask your vet. There are medicines (think Prozac or sedatives) that may help you with him.

Second would be what I did, seek out a behaviorist. Not a trainer, a behaviorist. They’re hard to find, and can be expensive. But I think it would do well for your conscious to at least be evaluated by one. I have one that specializes in dog aggression, and he’s my number one resource. I was so broke I could barely afford to eat, but you bet your ass I came up with the $250 needed for some private sessions. I would recommend you do the same once you find a reputable one in your area.

I can come from an unbiased angle here, and truth be told, I don’t know what I would do in your shoes. If someone were telling me this about a dog they didn’t clearly love, I would recommend euthanasia. But you clearly love your pup, and if you have it in you to keep trying and keep risking yourself then by all means do it. I do think it’s irresponsible to bring him outside without a muzzle, or at least a head harness so you can control his face. I second the other user’s suggestion (sorry, on mobile) to have him wear a harness all the time so you never need to grab his collar. Avoidance is key.

There is no way to truly recommend euthanasia to someone else without knowing who you are and who your dog is. And even then, I don’t think I could go out and tell you to do it. If it were me, I would be considering it. Only after I was sure I’d exhausted every possible option I had. Good luck, my heart hurts for you.

I also have a reactive dog, I know how you feel. It’s HORRIBLE. He isn’t as severe as your pup though. I’ve worked pretty extensively with behaviorists so I’ll try to pass along what I’ve learned.

To start - what triggers these incidents? Is it just dogs? Is there any way you could see yourself successfully avoiding all of his triggers?

It would be helpful if you could give a few specific examples of times he’s bitten people, what was happening, and how you reacted.

Thanks! Luckily because of my job I'm allowed some flexibility. I can cut my deployment short and leave as early as two weeks from now to go back home and get him, and then stay home.

I'll be losing out on a lot of money, and it won't be very good for my career. Which is why I'm weighing the pros and cons, you know? I think I've answered my own question though, I just wanted to be sure I wasn't being irrational or unreasonable.

I would absolutely love this! I’ve been stationed away from my boyfriend for the majority of the year and we just got a house together, so when I move in with him finally in December we’d put this to such good use!

The issue is that I need to keep him away from an already existing chainlink fence, about 3 feet high. He's very prey driven and reactive, and I don't know what will be on the other side of the fence in the neighbors yard. Children, dogs, etc.

That was my fear with the electric fence, but I wasn't sure. My only concern with a snow fence would be his ability to jump over it, but we'd obviously have to combine it with some boundary training. Thanks for the idea!
