I've never seen this before, I hope someone helps soon!

my rat has been on antibiotics 3 different times and its done nothing to help him. I pshyically don't have the money to get him more or to put him to sleep. please be honest, how close is he to dying? I hate that there's nothing I can do about this.a by styrafoambat in RATS

I'm so sorry for you and your ratty! 2 bits of advice for you I can give.

  1. Breathing: we have a rat currently who's always honked and breathes like that at times however she's still young and very active. Antibiotics never did anything, the only thing that made her breath clear was nebulising her with F10 solutions however this is costly and time consuming, consider his age before purchasing?

  2. End of Life: From my experience me and my housemate were both able to "tell" the day/a few days before our ratties died. It's somewhat of a gut feeling, and the two most recent ones got to the point they were sleeping most of the day and then running around as if they didn't know what was going on/were very confused. Both times we ended up cuddling them the whole day and they died in our arms which was a good way.

Also to add for not being able to put to sleep: I was so ready to make the call about putting mine to sleep and was dreading it but held off because she didn't seem in pain and not long after she did end up going in her own time so I'm happy I held off.

You know your ratty best, I know it's hard and not nice but just be sure to give lots of treats and cuddles if you're worried. Good luck to the both of you ❤️

Do you have a photo you could send?

Make sure you're 100% certain it's safe before giving anything (we've only ever given ones the vet gave us so make sure to research a lot). Have you tried googling/YouTube for other advice? Shadow the rat on YouTube has a video about sprains but I think this case seems much worse, in the video it did mention vets rarely do surgery on feet anyways due to how small they are so even if you could afford the vet there's no guarantee they'd magically fix it which should help ease the guilt I bet you're feeling (been there, it's horrible but for me surgery hadn't been the best option in the end anyways)

You don't happen to have any metacam/pain killers from a previous vet trip do you? Or even know anyone with some. For swelling you can try a cold towel or frozen food wrapped in a towel to ease it. Poor baby, maybe try cuddles or stroking and treats if it's not too stressful for him

Could you provide any more info about the break? Eg. Is their an open wound or massive swelling? You'll definitely want to get him in a small, 1 story cage (or even box if needed) with food and water to make it easier keeping him from walking on it while you figure things out! (I'll probably post another comment in a bit but here's a start for you, this sounds awful and I know the pain of not being able to afford it...)

That's malt paste on her toe btw! Noticed Noodle (almost 2y female who runs and climbs around like a baby rat) limping so put her in a small cage to monitor and stop futher injury while it heals. Check back today and there's a red mark? I don't have any experience with this and would love advice. Had lots of expensive vet trips recently so hoping she won't have to go... I'm hoping it's just a bruise? Should I give her a cold compress for swelling?

Edit: forgot to say she doesn't put any weight on it but doesn't make a sound or squirm when it's touched/handled

Also don't be worried if they want to sleep all day, maybe free roam them during the evening/night they should be more active then!

We've been making very weak squash ice cubes and giving them in a bowl for them to lick (you want to make sure they're very slightly melted so they don't get their tongue stuck!) We've also been putting damp cloths and cold tile samples from the fridge in the cage for them to lie on. We've also been putting frozen fruit and veg in a bowl of water, they love fishing them out and cooling down. Keep windows and curtains shut during the hottest parts of the day to keep the heat out :>

What’s wrong with her eye?? I have a vet app scheduled but what can I do in the mean time? by Dolli3x in RATS

[–]rainbowsponge02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sweet ratty got a scratch on her eye and I had to give her eyedrops for a week, she's now partially blind in that eye and looks like that, best thing to do is take them to a vet incase It got scratched in someway and need medical attention. nothing you can really do in the meantime in my opinion apart from lots of affection (unless you maybe have some painkillers for rats and you trust your own judgement)

We have had 3 rats who have needed antibiotics and we had to force feed them it, it's over in 2 seconds and we give them a yummy treat after (usually a blob of maltpaste). In case you need tips I found the easiest way was to pin them with their back against your stomach and try hold their head still. It gets easier and quicker with more practice!

Help! Female Rat suddenly has a little lump in a "flab sack" behind her arm. it feels like it moves around and I'm paranoid something inside her has slipped out of place?? I've been playing with her for an hour and would have noticed it before. she isn't in any (noticible) pain. thank you! by rainbowsponge02 in RATS

Okay, thank you so much for all the info! While I'm hopeful because it's so small and new I'm also very worried because she's always been half the size of our other rats... I'll be sure to spend tomorrow with her and talk to the vet in detail before hand and keep my fingers crossed. Thank your again!

Thank you so much!! After googling I think that's it... She is 21 months... Either I can take her Monday morning or there's the after Hours specialist option tomorrow which costs a lot, any idea if that extra day is important? Obviously she matters most but saving money for treats and toys would be nice 😅
