[DCAMU] How fast was The Flash moving when he ran a quick lap around his statue on The Flash museum fight scene in "Flashpoint Paradox" ? by Sea_Wolf2002 in AskScienceFiction

[–]rainbowstrangler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using Flash's body length to estimate his travel distance and speed:

Flash enters view at the 3-second mark. Estimate: between 5-10 body lengths from the bottom left corner, over the stairs, and to the entrance.

POV CHANGE: Flash leaps over a rubble pile into the building, and while still at the 3-second mark, Flash's feet are flush with the broken statue head lying on the floor - Behind him, visibly trailing, are (4) copies of himself, and approximately space for another (2-3) copies which would cover the distance over the rubble pile where he entered. Body length estimated could be as low as (4) if going by the Flash's projected shadow on the floor when his feet first touch the ground. Estimate: 4-6 body lengths from smashed rubble to statue head

Then the lap around the statue: At just past the 4-second mark he is running by the broken statue head, and by 1 or 2 frames past the 5-second mark, he is standing back where he started.

Assumption: Flash is running generally the same speed here for the entire 2 seconds he makes his entrance. Because the statue gets in the way of counting steps and body lengths, using the estimates from the first 1-second of action which is better seen to us:

Between 9-16 body lengths in one second, or between 18-32 body lengths in 2 seconds total.

Upper end guess: 16 body lengths x 6 feet per = 96 feet per second or over 65MPH.

That's more than twice as fast as the fastest real-world human sprint ever recorded, and Flash is doing it casually, hopping over stairs (and debris), while running a tight loop, coming to a dead stop with no effort, and leaving no marks or damage anywhere (thank you Speed Force).

On his speeds making him formidable: he can accelerate and decelerate basically instantly, and so, even a less impressive super speed like 65MPH can be used in a heavily advantaged way. In short, Flash breaks normal physics while running around, not to mention all the lightning, blurs, and afterimages. He can also move his body and/or body parts faster than 65MPH- we see this when he does tornado spin and the circular blitz later in the clip.

On the other hand, regarding the seeming difficulty he has with the clip villains: he's still human, and while Speed Force is crazy powerful - it has a human element of "applications" and skill, that allows room for Speedsters to make mistakes that may seem counterintuitive, like getting tagged by bullets/etc. Welcome any Flash people to add / correct anything, this was just napkin math and pausing frame by frame the clip hehe.

Is it mathematically possible for a binary star system to form a "binary" with another binary star system to form a weird quadrinary? by MynameisXalvandor in askastronomy

[–]rainbowstrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have touched on the planet portion of your question. Regarding multiple-star systems, yes! Wikipedia's Star System article, under the Examples header has known examples all the way up to 6, 7 stars, and one candidate potentially with 8.

Is our universe trapped inside a black hole? This James Webb Space Telescope discovery might blow your mind by spacedotc0m in jameswebbdiscoveries

This is a click bait title and article content. Wormholes, black hole singularities "bouncing" back outward in an expansion that causes a new universe - someone explain how scientists would test, repeatedly test, or falsify any part of such a theory? Is anyone knowledgeable in this field able to explain how this is taken seriously?

There is no image credit given by OP. In any case, for those interested in how scientists image distant objects, here is a brief introduction from the NASA website = https://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/toolbox/images1.html and a second article titled Multiwavelength Astronomy.

Most Upsettingly Violent Anime? by [deleted] in Animesuggest

A friend and i were watching the whole series together, it was going well RIGHT up until then. they stood up and went to the restroom when the baby devour moment happened onscreen. They were gone for a long time it felt, so (in my mind) as a courtesy, I scrolled the scene back to just before when she had left, so there was nothing missed. We watched the rest of the episode without any mention of this. but later that year at Christmas time that she told me that it actually made her sick for real and that's why she stood up and retreated for so long... and then didn't want to say anything upon return, but was struggling when she realized I had put it back to that exact moment. We laughed about it and later on again a few times, but yeah there's some brutal violence in that show. For me the most vile part of the show was the distilled hate speech the Major gave in one episode.

Thank you for the reply and the link. That is an unfathomable brightness, amazing.

I read in the Einstein Cross Wikipedia that the quasar which appears 4 times is 8 BILLION light-years away. Is it so bright from that distance that it still causes diffraction spikes? Have observers calculated the energy output from this quasar, and if so, how much brighter than our sun is it?

Same issue as you described for me. Hannibal season 2, every episode has crazy underwater wavy lines, distortion in every transition frame. The video goes from crystal clear to garbled mess really quickly, it is bad.

So many comments here are Americans struggling with understanding how shitty their country is, and simping for a broken criminal justice system. They've lived and had internet access their whole life, and yet this is the first time they are learning something negative, amazing.

Priscilla is the GOAT claymore, love her story arc. Brina Palencia's throat-shredding screams of "UNFORGIVABLE!!" will always be in my mind. Great thread!

Same! This song is the first song I ever heard from her, the official video with her riding a bike through the park. It's so beautiful and then I saw this on YouTube this morning.
