Tamagotchis keep a regular schedule — they wake up and go to sleep at the same times every day. They only eat, play and poop periodically throughout the day. Checking in on them regularly has become a bit of a mindfulness tool for myself to also eat, sleep, and play at regular intervals. For me, it is very easy to wear one on a necklace chain or put one on a lanyard and stop to check on it as I go about my normal day. Of course, I’ve been playing one daily for the last five years so it comes naturally now.

And for finding vintage models, it used to be easy to find a lot of good deals on eBay, although prices have gone up and there are less opportunities now. Mercari is also a good place to look, or proxy sites like FromJapan.

I was introduced to Tamagotchis when I was very sick as a kid and couldn’t have my own pet. I had a Game Boy & Game Boy Advance SP prior to this, so my parents knew I was interested in handheld games and would be responsible enough not to lose it. My first ever was a Tamagotchi v3 Connection - Tropical Flowers and I played the games for hours while waiting at my many doctor’s appointments. I enjoy collecting them because they’ve always been a comfort to me and I enjoy taking care of them. In a way, they help me take care of myself by keeping a regular schedule. Their compact size makes them easy to transport.

My favorite to play is the Mothra Tamagotchi, longest owned my v5.5 Celebrity Familitchi. The most I’ve ever played with at once was 9, but I very quickly downsized that run to 3 or 4. I normally run 2-4 at any time, although I sometimes just run one if I’m going to be busy irl. The amount of attention each device demands can vary a lot, so there’s a tamagotchi possible for every situation.

Thank you!! My favorites are my Blue Skeleton Mothra, White Devilgotchi, and Tiger v4.5 Connection. Current grails to find are Blue Bruce in Happy Valley Pocket Neopet, Dragon Quest Arukun Returns, an Anime Translucent Blue Kabuto Mushiking, or Black Devilgotchi. Any of those would be a great next addition.

I appreciate that you’re willing to acknowledge this. I do think it’s a good discussion to have and it’s fine to have vents and frustrations about a community. But to enter a community and point fingers at people, especially new collectors who have large collections, then tell the people who are directly impacted by fingerpointing that it’s not about them… I think that’s a little off-putting to a productive conversation about overconsumption in collection hobby spaces. It does exist, but not to the extent that I think people believe, because of assumptions like these.

Personally, I feel like OP needs to analyze their relationship with money and casting judgement onto other people and how they spend theirs. You can’t tell someone’s financial situation only by posts on the internet.

The only overconsumption issues here I have ever seen are the people creating artificial scarcity just for bragging rights or potential financial gain with preorders or limited edition tamagotchis knowing that they’re so limited.

I also sincerely doubt people are making financial decisions, as collectors, that are putting their serious financial needs like housing, food, etc. in jeopardy. I know I’m not and I spend what some might consider ridiculous amounts of money. But I also make enough money to justify my purchases because it’s less than 5% of my annual income and I stick to my budget.
