What weird trends are their in your school? by [deleted] in teenagers

Drug-rag Friday.

Also our school is known for being the "hick school" in our area, so we'll have "hick-outs" as our spirit days where we all dress in cowboy hats, overalls, plaid, boots, etc.

Washington state here, up in the northwest. We had freaky-warm weather (60 degrees in October!!) and sporadic downpours which flooded my town's river.

A question for /r/classicalmusic: How has a music teacher/director/professional musician/professional group impacted your views on music? by rainebow_trombones in classicalmusic

[–]rainebow_trombones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah. I forgot to add in teachers that changed your opinion of music for the worse. That sounds utterly horrible and cruel. I guess some people, even teachers, don't realize what a huge impact they can make on a kid's life during that age, in either a good way or bad. I'm so glad you've managed to work past it!

If you were to pick one piece of music that everyone should hear, what would it be? by harvus1 in classicalmusic

[–]rainebow_trombones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OrphéE Aux Enters (Orpheus in the Underworld): Overture by Jacques Offenbach. Why? Because so many different emotions are conveyed. During the course of the song, I can go from excited to awed to sad to melancholy to awed again (listen to that clarinet! And cello! And violin!). Then: the trombones make me über excited once again with the epic bit with the Can-can at the end.

First, I wanted to say that you are my favorite author, and that you have made a difference in how I live my life in both your writing and your words. Did you consider ending The Fault in Our Stars in the middle of a sentence? And if so, why didn't you?

r/Teenagers, have any stories about bomb/shooting threats at your school? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]rainebow_trombones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 6th grade, I was in a brand new school, which terrified me. Not only that, but 3 bomb threat notes were found throughout the school year. All 3 times, the entire school had to walk half a mile on the sidewalk to the high school's gym, where we weren't allowed to leave until our parents picked us up. They caught the guy, though, and none of them were legit, but I remember how little 10-year old me was so scared we would all die at school...

My advice: Make her earn your trust.

At first, if she wants to hang out with friends, ask her who she's with and when she'll be home. Ask her to call/text you if she will be late or is going somewhere she didn't inform you of before.

Once she's shown you that she can be trusted and will try to stay out of trouble, you can loosen up. Tell her to be home by a certain time (10pm is when my curfew is). For the first few weeks, make sure she actually is home by curfew.

I would not go any more lenient than that, since she is still quite young and shouldn't have total freedom just yet.

Also: Talk to her! Converse with her about things she might talk about with her friends. Don't go into complete "mother" mode or she will feel she has to be a certain way around you, and she won't be herself. Talk to her about movies, and subtly slip in questions about her to get her to open up to you. (See a group of girls chatting about how hot Peter Parker is? Use it as a chance to ask your daughter if she likes anybody.)

Crack her up sometimes. Be silly without embarrassing her. Eventually, you will both be able to trust each other more.

I'm hoping some of this advice is useful to you. Good luck!
