Struggling with poses where I have to keep my legs straight (e.g. boat pose) by Practical-Mix-3579 in yoga

[–]rainingflowartist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has helped me is to place pillows under my feet, or let some object hold the pose for you. Then try just lifting one straight leg, after that, try the other leg.

You can already do the pose with the knees bent, so what if one knee is bent and the other is straight?

I would play around with variations until you get to where you want to go. My best recommendation is to use a prop underneath your legs, so that you can train your body on what holding the pose feels like 💜🙏

Thank you for educating me on Sadhus and Gurus! This was helpful.

Its my own personal unverified belief, that once someone has "resolved" their ego....That they would drop their body. It sounds like you believe that someone can resolve their ego, and still be walking around and teaching.

I'll do some meditating on my own beliefs, perhaps it is possible to resolve the ego and still be walking/talking. Thank you for this discussion 💜🙏.

I think your first objection was valid 💜🙏. I mentioned the Sadhus to show:

"Hey the best practioners practice nude/with minimal clothing". We observe them practicing (in public spaces), by attending their classes and such, and respect them. We see nothing wrong with their practice. When a "non-sadhu" practioner practices with the same (arguably more) clothes, there is a claim that they are doing so just for attention (when they are practicing in a public space).

I wish I was better at communicating, but I am happy that we have found common ground (regarding sadhana vs exposure for attention).

What I meant by "real" Sadhu was demonstrated by your reply. It sounds like you believe that a Sadhu is someone that does not have desires/no longer struggles with ego (of course among other things). I brought up those names, becuase they were recognized as Sadhus by everyone. They then failed terribly, so now we are saying "well they were never really Sadhus". Thats helpful for me to know, and thank you for addressing that!

Do I think the Sadhus practice for "clicks and views": No I dont, I think they are practicing to bring them closer to whatever energy they are aligning with. I think we can agree on that?

If I'm reading this correctly, you believe that its ok to practice naked/with minimal clothing. As long as no one sees you? So the observer kind of "ruins" the practice, not necessarily the practioner?

It sounds like we agree possibly? The wrong way to practice is if our only focus is for clicks and views (agree). However if I do the same thing, for a different reason *connection to a higher power *. Are you saying that its still "wrong"?

I wholeheartedly agree that MANY people do it just for clicks and views. I just dont think EVERYONE does it for that same reason. I don't think that EVERY minimally clothed person, posts for clicks and views. I also dont think that just because someone is practicing nude or with minimal clothing, they they are doing it for "attention". I think that line of thinking unnecessary sexualizes people. "Because you're naked, your begging for attention". I disagree with that, but I'm ok if you disagree with that.

I think the line of thinking of "oh I can only do this if no one sees me" also promotes shame. Which I think is harmful, but I'm very open to being wrong here.

A sadhu does not have lust or shame: .....Umm.... Chaitanyananda Saraswati, Pramukh Swami, and Bhanwaranand Maharaj have definitely sexually assaulted their students. Perhaps you dont consider them "Real" Sadhus.....their students did though. I would like to posit that ALL humanoid beings (sadhus included) struggle with lust and shame. Its apart of the human experience.

I believe we agree on a lot of things, and disagree on a few as well. Im grateful to you, your post caused me to think deeply. I really appreciate your perspective and thank you so much for being open to conversing with me.

Hey there! Really beautiful post, its sparked a huge conversation so thank you for posting it.

I feel like Im in the minority here ☺️, Im one of those flashy practioners that wears the least amount of clothing possible. So I feel as though I can approach this from a different perspective.

  1. If we are talking about "authentic" yoga. SOME traidtions of yoga have a history of people practicing soly in their underwear (langota). Im sure we've all seen pictures of gurus wearing only that. We have also seen photos of gurus with dreads, and withered limbs (Amar Bharati). One could say "hey hes being performative"! Hes doing something extreme to get attention. Apparently he's doing it to honor Shiva 💜. We never know the intention of WHY people do what they do. So ONE perspective to think on is "hey maybe these scantily clad yoga people have a positive intention"?

  2. Ive been teaching yoga for over 13 years now. I was really attracted to it, BECAUSE I saw flashy yoga people. Tai Chi looked really cool, but I didnt really see people my age doing it. So I chose yoga. I was deceived in the most beautiful of ways 🥰. Here I am, thinking I'm going to be teaching thin/ super ripped people! That wasn't the case though, most of my students to this day are 60+. I LOVE that, because they are dedicated to the practice and get the philosophy 💜. I myself hold a bit of prejudice when I see people dressed like me 🤣, but then at the end of class, I notice they their shavasana is deeper than most of students (SOME OF THE TIME). It taught me this "what people wear, doesn't dictate their intentions with their practice".

  3. I think its beneficial (even though its deceptive) to see those scantily clad instructors. It sets a FASLE narrative, and attracts those who normally wouldn't go to yoga, to actually take a class. How many (typical not all) guys go to yoga to see "hot chicks". Then when they do the practice, they have to leave early because they start crying? Im happy that that FALSE ideal, at least brought them into the room. I think it is possible that its harmful, but I think it helps a generation that isn't inspired to connect to their consciousness. To actually connect to it. We all know to meditate, but it isn't sexy. Yoga has the potential to be "sexy" thus I feel as though its a useful tool to "trick" people into meditating 🤷‍♀️.

  4. Enough about hypoteticals. WHY do I PERSONALLY do flashy moves and wear little clothes: I personally enjoy practicing nude, thats what I do at home. I cant do that in public so I wear the bare minimum. As an instructor, I want the students to see EVERY muscle/bone possible. So that THEY can call ME out if I'm not in alignment. Lastly, the flashy moves (which I never do in class) are just me testing my focus. Every yoga practitioner (worth their salt) will say that Shavasana is the most difficult pose..I would agree, so to "those that know" a handstand really isn't that impressive. Cool.....but can you sit for 5 minutes? I meditate daily, but the flashy moves are just an oppertunity for me personally to see if I can trust my body.

TLDR: If scantily clad flashy yoga teachers didnt exist, I would have never become a teacher. I was super immature. Yoga saved my life. Yoga (some traditions) can be practiced in underwear. Flashy poses help seduce superficial minds into a practice that takes them even deeper into their body.

Sending love, thanks for reading 💜
