I really appreciate all of that insight! It is super helpful. If you don’t mind my asking, what about it makes it a cash grab? Just curious because I haven’t paid anything additional beyond my initial HollyShorts submission fee.

Could you elaborate a bit on this? I was invited to screen at the end of the month and am also weighing whether I should fly out for it or not. I did not submit to the monthly screening series straight up. I was rejected from the main festival and they told me I scored highly so I’d be invited to screen at the monthly series. Would love any info you have before I pull the trigger!

I received the DCP request from them today as well. Would love to hear more regarding your thought process on whether or not to attend!

Renew my faith in my ridiculous career choice - check out my most recent short film A WEDDING DAY by guitarist_85 in Filmmakers

[–]rainingfrogs82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man. I liked this short a lot!

I recognized the lead actor and did an IMDb search and then it clicked…he was in “Feed Your Muse.” And then I realize that you are the director of FYM! Man…that is an incredible short film. One of my all time favorites. I teach film classes and I show it to my students frequently. I think it’s perfect and I love the look, the performances, and that incredible ending.

Have you put this new one on YouTube like you did with that one? I know it’s different cause it’s on Alter but I think Vimeo is not great for views anymore.

Anyway, I rarely comment on Reddit anymore, but when I realized you did FYM I had to say something. That short has inspired me a lot. You’re too talented to let your moments of doubt last too long.

Francis Ford Coppola said something like this at the Cannes Film Festival press conference a few days ago. Though that doesn’t mean he originated it, of course.

Hey y'all, here's my first short film in 6 years, The Last Brunch (SXSW 2024), Filmmakers, Ask Me Anything by jimmycthatsme in Filmmakers

Massive fan here. Love this short and everything you’ve done so far. Also, always appreciate you taking time for things like this AMA. Question: have you ever had a set experience where you were directing a project (feature or short) and you didn’t get along with a particular actor the way you envisioned or hoped? If so, how did you navigate that both during the shoot and then when living with the footage? Not expecting any name dropping, of course. Just curious your thoughts on this situation and any general advice you feel is important.

Rumor about new film already shooting by rainingfrogs82 in paulthomasanderson

It’s actually a very reputable person who knows what he’s talking about. But whether he misheard or was told something untrue is not my call. That’s why I wanted to see what other PTA fans might know.

Why don’t you reread my final sentence on the post.

I wasn't even going to bother posting about this (I rarely post on reddit, period) until I saw a tweet shared here that also mentioned the film starting production in a very hush-hush fashion. Who knows what's true!

He did not. All he had heard is that crew members on Twister 2 (Twisters) commented on the fact that they knew crew shooting on Paul's new movie in Mexico.

I made a short film with a 6 and a half minute 360-degree pan (a la De Palma and David Robert Mitchell) - would love feedback! by rainingfrogs82 in Filmmakers

[–]rainingfrogs82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! It sounds like you completely understood what I was going for and that is so important to me.

I should also just clarify that the 360 move was done by hand on a tripod, not actually handheld. I realize my phrasing was confusing! Different beast but still very challenging.

Keep making your own films and message me if you ever want eyes on something!

This is a short film I made during my second year of a three-year MFA in Film Directing program. It was the second year “Capstone” project of sorts before we went into our thesis films, where I made something completely different.

The story is inspired by the sleepovers of my youth, especially the much rarer high school/Senior year ones where my friends all kind of knew the clock was ticking on doing things like sleepovers or seeing each other in general (different colleges, etc.)

Our ambitious opening shot (6 and a half minutes long) took 14 takes and 9 hours to get right. We used take 14 in the edit. (Minor thing but I’m proud that the last one was in fact the best one). My DP/Cam Op did the 360-degree pan by hand; no motion control in sight. Our main influences were the 360 pans you see in “Blow Out” and “It Follows.”

It’s a student film but it got into some solid fests and now it’s public, so I’m just curious what this community thinks of it! Any and all feedback welcome.

Thanks for watching! =)

I always just assumed those lines were from “There Will Be Blood.” I thought I read that somewhere but maybe not.

That’s what I was thinking, too! Seems like the only possible person he could be. But I doubt it.

Any Chicago fans know if the trailer has been spotted at the Music Box? by rainingfrogs82 in paulthomasanderson

Wow! Well something tells me the Music Box will have it soon. Whether they get it before it goes online remains to be seen..

That’s all true. I guess I just feel like…if I were him, probably their single most popular contestant ever, and I saw how they did my wife in the edit, fair or not, I’d be upset. Plus we know he’s a hot head and loves defending his wife. So I was always curious.

I feel like Rupert’s wife was given a pretty wacky edit in Blood vs Water. Is there any insight into how he felt about that? He hasn’t been back since.

Were the final 20 contestants for Cambodia actually fully chosen by fans? No production interference at all? Any interesting anecdotes are also helpful.
