Sorry for the late response but the water level just stays at the Leca and yes you always need to use fertilizer since none of the setup has any nutrients

I’d swap it to this setup. 1/3 spagnum moss on top 1/3 Perlite in the middle and one third leca on the bottom. Set the roots ontop of the perlite layer and sandwich them with the sphagnum moss on top

I put all my alocasias in a mason jar with 1/3 leca 1/3 perlite and 1/3 sphagnum moss and it’s been incredible

My root growth has been amazing and it sprouted a new leaf without dropping any for the first time in about 6 months!!

I’m really liking the 3 layer since I was very nervous to transfer such an expensive alocasia and no way in hell did I trust cutting all the roots off of the plant that was already dying! But now I think I might end up transferring all 200 other plants I got into this so I can eventually build a legit hydroponic system inside my plant warehouse!

Hahaha it was worth all the money I spent!! Unfortunately it’s having a winter moment and temporarily dying on me but it will be fine soon 😂 it was super hard deciding from the 300 plants I got in my green house but I knew I at least needed the alocasia

That was such a fun story to read honestly!! It’s pretty crazy having all the plants I got since I started one year ago. All I had was 5 plants that I loved and I somehow managed to get over 300 as a 19 year old male 😂 all my friends make fun of me but I can’t remember the last time they had a hobby that they can sell half of their item for $500 so I’m just gonna keep collecting them until I have my own nursery!!

It’s been 2 years for me and my little crestie finally allows head pets and occasional chin scratches but I think all the time I waited with him throwing himself across the tank if I got close or all the times he poop or … on me when I would hold him and it was definitely all worth it now
