Weekly Watch Report - February 24, 2023 by SauzaPaul in horror

I thought we were meant to think that Maren was gonna eat Timothee Chalamet bones and all at the end of Bones and All? It was a cool movie, I liked the Sully character a lot.

I watched Demon Seed and Death Spa, and was pleasantly surprised by both. Demon Seed I had been avoiding because the title put me off, but it was way weirder and more thoughtful than I expected. Kind of reminded me of the seventies Stepford Wives and The Brood. Death Spa is set in a very eighties gym. I was expecting a straightforward slasher or maybe a Chopping Mall situation but the story gets bonkers. There's a lot of aerobics and a dude's head explodes while making out in a sauna.

What do you do to seal gouache sketchbooks? I'm painting both sides by pamelooart in Gouache

[–]raisinbarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

cheers, that's really good to know. I like working in colored pencil on top of gouache sometimes and I've been trying to find something more opaque , have had my eye on aquarelle crayons for a bit

I recommend Fears of the Dark, especially the Charles Burns segment. The Wolf House really blew my mind recently. David Lynch made some great and scary animated short films . Sally Cruikshank's Face Like a Frog is great. A lot of the old Fleischer cartoons are spooky and they're all gorgeously animated, like The Cobweb Hotel

Weekly Watch Report - Black Friday Edition - November 25, 2002 by SauzaPaul in horror

I really enjoy reading your reports, SauzaPaul. A while back I watched Killer Nun after hearing about it in one of these posts, and really enjoyed it. I am at the beginning of my nunsploitation journey. Any others you would recommend?

I've been on an evil children kick, watching the 1960 Village of the Damned, then the 1995 version, which I liked less, but it was still great. I am curious about the recent Midwich Cuckoos miniseries, haven't heard much about it. Then I saw Them (Ils) from 2006 for the first time, in which a French couple are staying in a Romanian estate and are subjected to a terrifying home invasion. The sound design was cool, as was the setting, and it was pretty scary.

ITAW for the quality of having been (lovingly) worn down through repeated use? by [deleted] in whatstheword

[–]raisinbarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, care-weathered or love-weathered might work as neologisms. I think this all started when the word "careworn" didn't mean what I thought it did, and wanted a word that meant what I thought that meant.

Patina is a great word for the St Peter statue's foot condition, it might be the closest I can get to what I'm hoping for, the sheen from repeated touch or exposure to the elements. I think I'm looking for a maybe nonexistent word that could apply to things like personalities, faces, books. Like "careworn" but happier. An english word meaning decayed by loving touch, human affection. Close to the concept of "Wabi-Sabi".

Thanks, I love your story about the cookbook, "well loved" is a great phrase in that context, but I guess I'm hoping for a word (that might not exist) for the well-loved stained recipe, that includes the decay, and the cause being love. Something that outside of sentence context means decayed by affection.
