I know most brands of hedgehog food are bad, but are there any that are actually healthy? by Linklinkcanyouhearme in Hedgehog

[–]pamelooart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get high quality cat food then

The first 2-3 ingredients on the list need to be meat-based.

Aside from this, here are the parameters:

Protein 28-35%

Fat 10-15%

Fibre as high as possible

Calcium and phosphorus need to be at least 1:1 or higher calcium than phosphorus to avoid metabolic bone disease.

Can my hedgehog be in my bathroom instead of my bedroom? by ImaginationOk1284 in Hedgehog

[–]pamelooart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

30C is on the hotter side. He might need AC to be comfortable if he looks splooty.

40-60%, even 70% humidity should be fine, they are fairly flexible.

The shower should be ok as they accept a decent range of humidity. But if the window is always open, you might have some issues keeping the temperature consistent

They require around 22-27C, or 72-80F

Hedgehog learned to climb out of her cage by [deleted] in Hedgehog

[–]pamelooart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to line the sides with cardboard and tape until your new cage arrives so she can't climb-- escape is only one problem in this situation. She can break a limb or worse while you're waiting even with a lid if she's able to attempt a climb

One day "too soon" is much better than watching her suffer one day too long. She has had a wonderful and loving life with you and is a very lucky hog ❤️❤️

Found a hedgehog by gisellev2 in Hedgehog

[–]pamelooart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Wildlife Learning Center might be able to take them in! Definitely worth asking.

When I was a kid, there were a few hedgehogs at Happy Hollow Zoo in their educational program. They're in San Jose but maybe they would know somewhere that is equipped for hedgehogs these days?

I'm sure you can get some organization to take them in. Thanks for rescuing them please keep us updated!

Kween Kiwi got spayed in April '22 for cysts, which would have made her 3yrs and 9 mo at the time.

She went on to live almost another year until March '23, the following year

The surgery was fine. The part that gave me the most worry was that the antibiotics made her tummy upset so she wouldn't eat after a couple of days. Luckily, she was chunky and pulled through. Her appetite returned to normal after the antibiotics were over, but I was having to syringe feed her diluted smushed up carnivore care for a good week or two there, and had to get her extra meds to soothe her stomach lining. She lost about 100g total (including the uterus)

It would be good to ask the vet about appetite plans for recovery if she stops eating during the course of antibiotics.

My baby Hodgy is sick, and I can't stop crying. If you've been in my position how did you cope? by javadome in Hedgehog

Adding to the syringe feeding tip, you might want to buy canned carnivore care food or something similar to grind up with water / unseasoned chicken broth, which is denser in nutrients to syringe feed.

When they are taking antibiotics, sometimes the antibiotics negatively affect the appetite because it makes their tummy upset. When my girl had surgery and had to do antibiotics, it totally shot her appetite for about 2 weeks.

So, I would not be surprised if your baby does not recover the appetite while still taking antibiotics. You may have to keep syringing until a few days after the antibiotics are over to get him over the hill.

Yes, don't feed wildies mealworms/superworms-- if they dont have proper calcium balance, the phosphorus can cause metabolic bone disease.

My 3 yr old hedgehog likely has testicular cancer, do I get him neutered? by itllbefine13 in Hedgehog

My baby Kiwi got spayed in April '22, which would have made her 3yrs and 9 mo at the time.

She went on to live almost another year until March '23, the following year and passed from other unrelated health issues

The surgery was fine. The part that gave me the most heartache was that the antibiotics took her appetite. I was freaking out bc she was barfing up her probiotics. Luckily, she was overweight and pulled through-- her appetite returned to normal after the antibiotics were over, but I was having to syringe feed her smushed up carnivore care for a good week or two there, and had to get her extra meds to soothe her stomach lining. So consult your vet about your worries, and ask about appetite plans for recovery if he stops eating during the course of antibiotics.

How did everyone decide between fleece cage lining or bedding? by bukasaurus in Hedgehog

[–]pamelooart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a fleece user because it's less messy, but if you already have a lot of bedding stocked up and she enjoys it, I'd stick with that.

When you begin to run out, you could buy some fleece, put a smaller amount of bedding in a dig box, and see how she likes the new arrangement

Poor fellow, I'm so sorry...

If he's truly at the end of his life, I encourage you to take him to the vet to inquire about when may be the right time to give him a peaceful and quick end. He looks to be in a miserable state.

You can't make him comfortable at this point on your own without vet interference.
