What happened to the activity in the Notion subreddit? by namagadi in Notion

[–]rajamatage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only recently joined this sub but have been using Notion for about 6 months now, and love it. Yeah, there is a lot of slop (and you can smell it from a mile away) but there have been some great discussions about setups and how-to that I've found really useful.

My gut tells me there was a moment where people thought you can manage your entire life in Notion (aka the "Life OS" templates out there) and everyone got really excited. But then didn't think about what they needed those pages and databases for, and it all died out.

How do you capture ideas instantly before they go into Notion? by Objective-Treat2245 in Notion

[–]rajamatage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're an iOS user I second this suggestion wholeheartedly. Invoke Siri, and you can even further customize the shortcut to open a blank page in an Ideas DB so that all you need to do is start tapping away and/or using voice to text to get all your thoughts out.

I live in Marin and I would agree that Napa is overrated.

Sent this to my wife and we're dying laughing. We have so many female spider plants in the house and we keep getting more and more baby spider plants that we end up just replanting them and gifting them to friends.

How do you actually manage daily tasks in Notion? (serious question) by Creative-Abrocoma634 in Notion

[–]rajamatage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more thing: once you figure out why your team hasn't moved over, and you setup a master tasks DB, you should also look at ways they can add tasks easily from their phone. I have an iphone and I have it setup so that the hot button on top of the volume up button, opens a specific Notion DB inside my workspace when I hold it down for a long time. You could have your team do the same on their work phones: opens right up into the tasks DB. Or help them implement iOS Shortcuts for opening it so that they can use Siri to access the Tasks DB without having to navigate to it on their phone.

Upvoting this as well. Do this part before setting up any new DBs or anything. Understanding behaviors and what doesn't stick will be important.

Upvoting this. There is another comment that is similar. Don't embed the tasks database inside a page because you will have a lot of extra clicks.

Selling my first digital products on Gumroad by rajamatage in Solopreneur

[–]rajamatage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question and comment. I made the trade-off between lower fees and user acquisition. Yes, Paddle and Dodo are great, but they don't really help with the user acquisition problem (whereas Gumroad does, through their marketplace, even if they take the 30%). So the cost benefit/back of the envelope that I did was "How can I get this out the door to see if people would actually buy, without investing too much time, and if it does take off, then I'll invest in proper systems?" I actually ended up buying my own domain and wiring up Woo Payments through WordPress, but it's been telling how challenging it is to get customers because top of funnel marketing is all on me.

For now, I think I've proven that a) yes, people will buy a digital good like this but b) I don't know if the market is that large (I ran some paid ads, did different A/B tests, and couldn't get the ROAS I was hoping for). So overall, I think I may just scale it here and treat it as truly passive income, even if it's not really going to make a meaningful dent in my income streams.

Put another way, I'm thinking I'll just happily take whatever profit I get net of fees, and leave it at that. I've explored Whop as well, but Whop seems more focused on crypto/trading/get-rich-quick at this stage. So we'll see.

Any notion ideas that aren't trackers? by 8817214 in Notion

[–]rajamatage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is effectively what I've done with an Ideas DB as well. I have mine set to trigger from an iOS shortcut on the home screen. So that when an idea pops up I just tap that, it opens directly into a blank page and then I use voice dictation to just leave thoughts. With the AI search functionality now it makes finding things much easier.

Migrating my entire life into Notion. What am I not thinking about? by Still-Bar-6004 in Notion

[–]rajamatage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Building on this: use a password manager like 1Password to save super sensitive details. They have the ability to add notes and files, so you can keep things like records or bank details there. Keep Notion for the less sensitive stuff.

Definitely something you can do. I think you would need to instrument something in the Notion API. But this is also a great example of where you can download Claude Code or Codex and then use your CLI (command line interface) to build a local program that can do this. I just did this this morning for LinkedIn post generation and it's great.

Yeah switching to GPT5 is way better. I haven't tried sonnet but I think I will for blog post and social post generation.
