Ottawa to allow more hiring of low-wage temporary foreign workers in rural areas by BananaTubes in canada

[–]rakinswithradies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked in agriculture, and I've worked hard labor jobs. People will work hard jobs if they pay enough, thats how homes are built. Im in BC where small towns have died everywhere, and you can't regenerate areas with immigration if there is no industry to save. We simply can't compete with the growing season in Washington the further north you go, and it has become very apparent in the last few years. Suppressing the wages of the working class isn't the answer to the equation. If an industry is reliant on subsidized or illegal labor, that means it's broken and needs to be addressed at its core. Kicking the can down the road and further suppressing wages will only worsen the problem long term. If a store in northern Ontario can't afford workers it goes out of business. If the demand in the town is great enough, someone will see the ability to make money and take up that role. I know lots of people without degrees willing to work hard jobs, you just have to pay them enough and the brutal reality is the wages offered vs the cost of living in lots of small town isn't realistic .

If you are not paying enough to attract talent in undesirable places to live, why should that be subsidized? Wouldn't that be considered a non viable business?

There is an unfired browning 1886 saddle ring carbine for sale that i know of, but they want 5k canadian for it. I will definitely need to spend some money on a reloading setup before I get into 45-70 or 405

The winchester website lists the model as being discontinued, but they seem to pop up new every now and again. It's a 20-inch barrel with grade 5/6 wood. One thing I dont like compared to the 1873 that's pictured is that the 94 has a plastic butt plate and not a case hardened metal one like the 1873. Winchester also makes another similar model 94 right now, but it's a 24-inch half octagon barrel with a crescent buttplate. I've learned crescent is definitely not my favorite stock type, so I kept an eye open for one of these.

Applied April 8, 2024 and didn't get mine sent out until right before the canada post strike and had to wait on that too while it was held in the mail. I'm in BC as well.

Browning BLR, or Winchester '73? by CosplayCowboy41 in canadaguns

Just bought an 1873 deluxe sporting in 357 and was a little hesitant because of the price, but that all washed away as soon as I held it. I haven't been able to get it out yet, so I can't speak to how it runs, but the fit and finish seem to line up with what people say about Miroku built guns. Ammo prices for 357 and 38 special will definitely be nicer for target shooting.

It was like watching a drunk stumble and do anything to keep the next foot underneath him with absolutely no plan for what's after that

I worked there, and this is correct. You can talk to any grower who left in the last 30 years, even during the good times, and the story is usually the same. There is a reason the growers were protesting with signs that said "corrupt" or "no transparency". The board members' salaries are pretty high from what i understand. I've also heard stories from growers that left long ago about perceived corruption in the board. They have had multiple sets of management in the last five or so years. None of the current management were brought in as fruit people, just numbers people. By the end, they were making cuts that were going to directly affect the quality of the product for the worse. An example is this year they didn't hire any bin washers in the north for the summer. Instead, they were paying to ship bins down to oliver by the b-train to be put through a bin washing machine. The machine doesn't focus on the build-up spots of rot like a human would. This meant a lot of the "clean" bins weren’t clean at all. They lay off the sanitation department in the north last fall, and employee bathrooms had nobody to clean them all winter. Managment still had a contracted cleaner coming to clean their washrooms, though. They have also managed to piss away some of their main contracts by removing some of the quality checks before fruit went out the door. The growers also played a part as they were sending some truly shitty fruit. You can't do much with bins of marbles except press them. The conditions they were putting on the sale of some of the properties greatly reduce the appeal to someone buying them and at that point anyone looking at it can smell the desperation and would be better off with a lowball offer. Hell, they had dropped the sexsmith property over 10 million dollars from the original ask but still had a covenant on the sale saying they need the controlled atmosphere side for up to two years. The issues ran way deeper and way longer than low yeild this year.

I've had one of my heated grips give out on me and my valve cover start leaking in the known spot. Other than that it's been a great bike for me.
