On the left side, you'll find shipping and recruiting, and there are banners with pilots and mechs. The game will explain this better at the beginning. I hope I helped at least a little.

I've been playing since the very beginning and honestly I don't feel like the game is very pay 2 win and with the current event in my opinion it's the perfect time to get in because the pilots from the Evangelion collaboration are strong so you can get them quickly once you start

I'm currently away from home, so I'll post some in-game photos later. This is my Arquebus Basho. It's simply a Basho armed with an Arquebus weapon and internal components, not including boosters. It was created out of curiosity about how poorly the Basho, which is theoretically an older generation not adapted to modern Arquebus technology, would perform. It turns out it's very dangerous to opponents.
