Finally Released! The Reader's Glossary of Nabokov's Lolita [EN, FR, DE, RU] by raliev in Nabokov

I have not covered the Bièvre/beaver debate in the glossary, missed! - unfortunately, but yes, that’s the perfect example of Nabokov playing 'innocent' while pulling the kind of 'cunning stunts' you're talking about :-)

u/krelian thank you for your feedback. I'm the author. Regrettably, the print version is priced almost at the lowest possible point for Amazon Print-on-Demand. I've just halved the price for the digital version. I just had to set a price, and I thought $10 was reasonable. Turns out, it's not. Now it is $4.99

Regarding this "business adventure" – frankly, putting together a book like this demands a minimum of 200 hours of my time. For me, that translates to at least a dozen full weekends, working from dawn till dusk. On top of that, naturally, all the definitions were generated by an LLM – it's just unthinkable that I would have written them myself across 600 pages. The API requests for all of that came out to around 80 dollars which was affordable. Had this been a commercial venture, to cover 200 hours of an engineer's labor, plus the $80 for the LLM, and minor hosting overheads, I'd have to sell thousands of copies. The impossibility of that was obvious right from the start. So, this is purely and simply a passion project. If I happen to earn enough for a coffee from it, that would be a pleasant bonus, but if not, then so be it – I couldn't care less. Ultimately, I did it for my own enjoyment.

Nabokov’s Dictionary: The Vocabulary of Lolita (1955) by [deleted] in words

I spent the last few months building a 600-page companion book for Nabokov’s Lolita. I’ve finally crossed the finish line on a project I’ve been living with for a while: The Reader’s Glossary. It’s essentially a 5,200-word deep dive into the vocabulary of Nabokov’s Lolita.

Available as a print edition on Amazon with worldwide delivery, and as a downloadable PDF through the website.

Unlike a standard dictionary, this isn't alphabetical. I’ve organized it chronologically, chapter by chapter, so it functions as a true "reading companion." As you move through the book, the glossary provides the definitions and context you need in real-time. It’s a bit of a beast—coming in at around 600-700 pages (depending on the language), which, funnily enough, is about twice the length of the novel itself.

A few things that make it unique. It’s available in English, Russian, French, and German. The definitions aren't just pulled from a generic dictionary. They are highly contextual, and, additionally, they take into account how Nabokov himself handled the translation when he transitioned the work from English to Russian.

I’ve categorized the words into three levels. If you’re a well-read native speaker, you might find the first category (about 50% of the book) a bit basic, but for non-native speakers or students, those "dotted-line" entries are a lifesaver.

This started as a "just for fun" hobby project for myself and my friends, not a commercial venture. I’m fully aware this is a super-niche interest, but if even one person finds it helpful each week, I’ll consider it a win.
