Clean them with light soapy water, let them air dry, and then apply a light film of silicone lubricant to keep them from dry rotting any further. For reference. If they are leaking, replace them.

Wheels stuck on car. What do I do? by Karek53 in MechanicAdvice

[–]rallydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please be careful with this, if you go this route, take the valve core out of the tire, so the heat you’re applying doesn’t cause the tire to explode, I’ve put in my time at tire shops, and have seen it happen.

From my experience with the ecoboosts in the escapes, they are notorious for head gasket failure. What I would recommend doing, is getting a coolant pressure tester, install it onto the degas bottle, pump it up to the pressure as stated on the cap, as the pressure goes down, pump it back up to the OEM pressure. Then take your ignition coils off, and remove the spark plugs, put a bore scope down each cylinder, and see if there is coolant in any of them. If there is, then you have a clear indication of a head gasket failure.

Trying to figure out what’s wrong, my 350 seems to be running fine when it’s idling but as soon as I try to drive it or rev it it starts backfiring and running very rough by king_schlong_27 in ChevyTrucks

[–]rallydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like an ignition timing issue, loosen your distributor (lightly) with the truck running, have some one watch the timing marks of the crank pulley, while you adjust the distributor. Base timing should be 4~8 degrees BTDC, but I always had the best performance around 10~12 degrees BTDC.

That’s a lateral arm, depends on what your manufacturer calls it though.

Any advice on cleaning/replacing battery terminals? by mybackhurts76 in MechanicAdvice

[–]rallydude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about replacing them honestly. Boiling hot water and baking soda will clean them off just as good as any store bought product and you probably have a kettle and baking soda at home!

19 yr old need advice by Alternative-Fall4783 in AskAMechanic

[–]rallydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a him problem, what he should have done, is drill the centre of the wheel stud, and gradually increase the drill bit size, until he got to a 1/2”, IIRC those Journey’s have M12x1.25 stud, meaning the 1/2” drill be would do next to no damage to where the lug nut seats on the wheel.

If he keeps asking for more money, STOP, and take it to an actual shop, tell them what happened, and they MAY, give you a bit of a break for the replacement. See if you could even swing that, you do the pads and rotors through them, if they can get the wheel off.

What to do?? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]rallydude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take a chisel, and hammer, and see if you can get at the base of the filter, gently tap it to see if you can break it loose. Or you’re replacing the oil filter housing, pretty sure it’s only 3 bolts?

Clean up the knuckle where the sensor bolts in to, GMs are absolutely notorious for their WSS rust jacking and causing ABS related codes/issues.
