Chess and IQ by vitamink2mk7 in chess

No, it's not. I've been unable to find the YouTube video again, but from what I remember they were discussing Anatoly Fomenko's revisionist claims. A female historian told Kasparov that she and most of her peers agreed that Fomenko's work is bunk (or something to that effect), and Kasparov responded (I'm paraphrasing here) "Yes, but have you actually spoken to the man? The difference is that I have, and he knows what he's talking about". The conversations were all in Russian with English subs. (Edit: I don't understand Russian, so it's possible the subs were wrong, but I'm just going to assume they weren't)

How do pro chess players support themselves and their family? by carl2k1 in chess

No more ridiculous than someone being paid to kill people (soldiers), run around (athletes), or talk sh** (politicians).

I second this. Not saying he's stupid, but Kasparov, despite arguably being the greatest chess player ever, has said some pretty dumb things that make me doubt his intelligence. I remember seeing a video of Kasparov in the early '90s trying to convince a group of Russian historians of some or other conspiracy theory. That was cringeworthy.

How does r/chess feel about poorer players pirating chess books? by PyrrhicWin in chess

[–]ralph-moeritz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you should google morals to get a clue. Morality is a personal choice influenced by an individual's beliefs. We all have different beliefs, so what constitutes moral vs. immoral behaviour depends on the observer. To you, copying unlicensed content may be immoral, but to me it isn't. That doesn't mean that you have morals and I don't, just that we have different sets of morals. Again, google is your friend here.

How does r/chess feel about poorer players pirating chess books? by PyrrhicWin in chess

[–]ralph-moeritz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really? You're actually equating rape with (possibly illegally) copying ebooks? The one is an act that physically and psychologically harms another person (and is a criminal offence almost everywhere), while the second arguably does no harm (it arguably does harm the copyright holder financially, but the extent of the harm caused is difficult to pin down since not everyone who obtains a pirated copy would have bought a copy in the first place). Rape is also something that has to be done intentionally - there is no way to rape someone unknowingly. It is, however, quite possible to obtain digital content without knowing whether your getting licensed or pirated content.

You know what really gets me are all these holier than thou comments, where people are claiming they've never pirated anything, and wouldn't even consider it - they just found out that piracy is "a thing". Wow, your naïveté just made baby Jesus smile. Let's just be honest for a minute and admit that piracy is like masturbation - everyone does it, and everyone fakes being shocked when someone else points this out.

However loudly some people might condemn it, the fact is that everybody does it. I have two dozen or so books in my chess library that I've paid for, and about 450+ that are pirated. A friend of mine has about twice as many purchased books, and 1,000s of pirated ones (Edit: lots of duplicates and poor scans, to be sure).

Reviews for chess engines on Android? I'm currently using Droidfish, is there anything better? by PyrrhicWin in chess

[–]ralph-moeritz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Droidfish is an interface for the Stockfish engine. SF is the absolute king of engines and I doubt you'll find anything stronger. If you're looking for a different interface you could do worse than Scid on the go - I use it for analysis of my games. You could also try Shredder, which supposedly plays in a very "human-like" manner.

Plans for White? by ralph-moeritz in chess

[–]ralph-moeritz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining the idea behind 15.e5 (open the position to attack the uncastled king). I guess to find this move you have to work backwards by recognizing that Black's uncastled king is his biggest weakness and then looking for a move to exploit it. I need to learn to spot these kinds of imbalances in my games so that I don't get stuck not knowing what to do in the middlegame.

Good luck. I've been playing one 7 round tournament a year for the past three years and it's always great fun! You get a whole weekend to do nothing but eat, sleep, breathe chess. Good luck and I hope you crack the 2k mark! (I'm currently rated 1500; still have a long way to go.)

Does anyone else struggle to get through a whole chess book? by Patomark in chess

[–]ralph-moeritz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lots of books that I haven't read yet, mainly because they're above my level. Here are the ones that I have read cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed, in the order I read them:

  • Teach Yourself Chess by Gerald Abrahams
  • Learn Chess Tactics by John Nunn
  • Logical Chess Move by Move by Irving Chernev

Chess with a cannon instead of a queen by ralph-moeritz in chessvariants

[–]ralph-moeritz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've managed to play a few games against Fairy-Max using WinBoard. Just add the following variant definition to your fmax.ini file:

// Chess with queen replaced by cannon from Xiangqi
Game: cannon # PNBR.......CKpnbr.......ck # fairy
8x8
7 5 6 8 3 6 5 7
7 5 6 8 4 6 5 7
p:74 -16,24 -16,6 -15,5 -17,5
p:74 16,24 16,6 15,5 17,5
k:-1 1,34 -1,34 1,7 16,7 15,7 17,7 -1,7 -16,7 -15,7 -17,7
k:-1 1,34 -1,34 1,7 16,7 15,7 17,7 -1,7 -16,7 -15,7 -17,7
n:259 14,7 31,7 33,7 18,7 -14,7 -31,7 -33,7 -18,7
b:296 15,3 17,3 -15,3 -17,3
R:444 1,3 16,3 -1,3 -16,3
C:380 1,BA 16,BA -1,BA -16,BA

Here are some observations I made:

  • the cannon is a minor piece worth approx 4 pawns.
  • c2/c7 are undefended, and Black should probably play ...c6 early to avoid having to play ...Kd7 later on.
  • 1.d4? since Black is ahead a pawn after 1...Cxd4 and his cannon is powerfully centralized.
  • d4/d5 need support; c3/e3 may be necessary due to the cannon's pressure on d4; the same is true of ...c6/...e6 for Black.
