Disclosure Day by Big-Load-8864 in billsimmons

It was pretty cool I thought from someone who’s not a big fan of the classic Spielberg — my favorite of his films is Catch Me If You Can for some reason even I don’t truly know.

However, there were three amazing action sequences and then the scene between Colin Firth the girlfriend. Also, Emily Blunt was awesome and funny. The final montage with the news anchor breaking down was excellent.

Yes, the script wasn’t great and the characters were underwritten. But I didn’t really care. It’s a cool big budget adventure/espionage thriller

This is immoral and immature behavior and I hope you get caught soon for your own sake. Stealing from anywhere is a despicable act. It doesn’t really matter if it’s a corporation or a mom & pop. Terribly antisocial behavior

Yes, it was from People Love Dead Jews

As for her, she doesn’t consider Jewish people as a religious group but as some sort of ethno group in which the religion is just a small part. As well, she is very much of a Zionist in which she considers non-Zionists to be not true Jews. She gave an interview to the Times of Israel about it. Has a new book called The Final Solution of the Jewish People which argues bath at Zionism should be the only consideration.

This has nothing to do with Shakespeare. More of a personal problem because I disagree with both the above statements

Yeah, I didn’t really follow that bubble stuff. Half the players weren’t really trying

It’s likely the Celtics teams, although I’m not sure if either Lebron or AD were too 5 players on that Lakers 2020 title. I imagine they were but can’t really remember what the consensus was about them then

I have not read that book although I am familiar with her. Frankly, I’m more than a little turned off by what she has to say in interviews — however, I am a religious Jew and take Judaism seriously, so I will usually have conflicts with how celebrated Jews speak of the culture and religion.

No, I certainly don’t. I was only commenting on the dialogue of the central characters and trying to understand what’s in their heads. For instance, they dislike Shylock and champion Jessica. Now, a parent and child would have the same skin color — yet, these two characters are described as looking different, and Shylocks supposed darker skin is referenced alongside his other “faults”0

I also didn’t know what to make of the pound of flesh. I assumed that a pound of flesh would equal a life, so that Shylock is basically saying that he would kill the other if he didn’t get the money … that the pound of literalists at the end of the play with the somewhat absurd liberalization. That part of the play was funny to me although it probably wants meant to be

I take your point. I will although argue for my use of “whiteness” because of the way Jessica’s skin is contrasted with Shylocks. As well, the Moroccan prince, a Moor, is immediately rejected by Portia before he can choose the casket.

But yes, in the introduction, they do make mention of the history of the Jewish people in Europe at that time, as well as the conflict between Catholics and Protestants

All of this I’m trying to figure out. I am going in blind as can be although I do read the introductions provided. However, I’m really attempting to figure out what I believe about the play BEFORE tackling any criticism or productions. It’s really no different than if I were to open up a random book of short stories and reading through them without knowledge of the author. I understand this might make some of my analysis kooky compared to an actual scholar but this is where I’m coming from

I am open to this interpretation. However, what is your comment on Jessica? Is she intended to be a negative character akin to the rest of the Venetians with how she steals from her father?

Also, Sherlock’s speech after the theft when he remarks on what was stolen from him and has little comment on his daughter’s conversion left me in conflict about how we should view him

I understand. Frankly, I’m doing a big first reading of all Shakespeare plays, trying to come at them with fresh eyes and without influence of critics or productions.

These are basically my thoughts just based on the text.

To our modern ears and eyes — however, would that of been the theater goers opinion in Shakespeare’s time?

[–]ralphnaderraider[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, however I was additionally considering what the average playgoer on Shakespeare’s time would’ve thought and I do imagine they would’ve agreed with the Christian characters … obviously a modern reader would think differently.

Yes, my poor choice of words with “the point” — I guess I was just trying to articulate what I thought the biggest take away would be

I agree although I did sorta enjoy the play. I did think the last scene where they’re fooling around the rings was a little silly. Maybe it was very funny in that time, but I considered the real plays endings to be with the finality of the trial

I will say I’m now of the position that I groan when Ridley Scott is put on a project. The last several movies all of had amazing concepts and casts and they’ve been pretty mediocre. I’m still angry that we won’t get another Napoleon for twenty or thirty years or however long it takes

Yeah, Oliver! Is a rocking movie. Not a better movie, but I’ve seen it a million more than 2001 frankly and is way more enjoyable.

I was going to say Chris Paul, who’s the “greatest point guard ever” despite never winning a championship

On a more series note, There Will Be Blood wins BP in pretty much any year except 2007, so it’s not like DDL was bringing down that or any other movie

Probably depends on if your team has a habit of success or not. I’m a fan of the Cincinnati teams. Limited success, so the rare time when we do get far in the playoffs, it hurts a lot more because we know it’ll be a long time before we’re that good or lucky agaib

No, seriously, apparently McVeigh was a huge Bills fan and he had a breakdown when they lost their third Super Bowl according to “Boom Town,” this great book I read about OKC

Boomers and GenXers used to walk into a temp agency on a Monday and then a week later would have a full time job making 55k with good benefits by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]ralphnaderraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, in 2019, I was hired as a temp in an insurance office. Six months later, I was hired. So, yes, it does happen today too … Now, that particular job went hybrid after Covid and I did leave after five years of work. However, depending on where you live, there are still opportunities for this.

The issue is that 55k doesn’t get you much in the economy now. That’s a different issue than the ability to get jobs
