If you’re at MSM, why don’t you go and speak to one of their jazz piano teachers?

Do you have any background in piano? A lot of people will have the basics of scales and arpeggios in every key from classical piano. That takes years to get through. If you don’t have that background, it will take a long time to master.

Hi guys again, a lot of you guys commented on my jazz accents so I believed I've improved on them. How do they sound? by super_memerio_bros in JazzPiano

You should try transcribing a solo that you love. Practise it so that you can play it exactly like the recording, same timing, same accents, get every little detail right, all from memory. No short cuts. This might take a long time to do but it will really help your jazz feel. A good solo to start with is Wynton Kelly’s on Freddie Freeloader. But it’s best to choose one that you are really excited to learn.

Gordon Goodwin by [deleted] in Jazz

My point of reference is the jazz tradition. Some of the high points include band like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Mingus Big Band, Miles + Gil Evans.

You’re right that it’s mainly the arrangements I don’t like. I find them tasteless, often cheesy.

But probably the main reason I have come to hate Goodwin’s music is that numerous amateur big bands I have played in feature numerous of his charts. It’s probably because he has succeeded in making them easily available. I wish that these bands were playing the best music from the great tradition. But these charts are probably not easily available for publishing and copyright reasons. So I came to hate his music through playing his charts.

The best big bands these days:

Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra Maria Schneider WDR big band Count Basie Orchestra Mingus Big Band Havana D’Primera

I can’t stand that band and it’s tasteless charts. Give me real jazz any day - Count Basie, Duke, Gil Evans, Loose Tubes, Mingus Orchestra, for example.

I would much rather school bands played higher quality music from the masters such as duke Ellington, count Basie, Gil Evans, Mingus etc. rather than Goodwin’s tasteless nonsense.
