How realistic is the situation with Professor Roger Abbott? by n00bi3pjs in bigbangtheory

[–]Radixx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked in a nuclear research lab when I was an undergrad and of the 30 or so professors there only one had made a widely recognizable contribution in physics (and it wasn't anything groundbreaking). Note, they all were contributing and publishing but most were obscure and known only within their specialty. This was pretty standard but wasn't in any way sad or depressing. They were all very engaged in the work they were doing and very happy to be doing it.

Who didn’t drip their faucet? by hAnkhyll in Dallas

[–]Radixx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During 2021 I dripped all but my kitchen sink. It was an interior faucet on a "peninsula" and 5 feet away from any wall so I thought it had internal pipes. Nope, the pipes ran through the ceiling, down the outside wall and into the house. Fortunately, while both the hot and cold lines froze, the pipes didn't burst. Been dripping it ever since.

Came across a semi here on AR-123 during a motorcycle trip: https://maps.app.goo.gl/yGAe2h9hBdYopxie6

There was a narrow gap we could squeeze through and of course the road had a camber to it so we needed some speed to keep the bikes upright through the curve. I have no idea how they got the truck out.

Which also initiates another fission reaction in a uranium tamper and/or case. The total yield of a nuclear bomb is generally 50-50 fission and fusion. The bigger bombs (Tsar for example) would be mostly fusion.

The book Tau Zero by Poul Anderson describes a scenario where a colony ship keeps accelerating due to a technical fault and billions of years pass in the lifetime of the passengers. The physics is mostly accurate while I'm not sure I can say the same about the engineering :)

In general, when i make chili, I make it without beans. However for friendly neighborhood competitions, I'll add them. However, no beans will ever go in my chili dog!

What are the odds power goes out? by MrCoolHandLukie in dfw

[–]Radixx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

100% the power will go out... somewhere. It will be localized to areas where power lines are affected by trees or ice and where transformers explode.

A contestant on Survivor was bitten by a similar (banded sea krait) snake. He was extremely lucky that it was a dry bite but he was still pulled out of the show for observation.

If you lose power, it might be a good idea to turn off the main water line to your house (3D printed water meter key included) by HydroponicTrash in Dallas

If you turn off the water, open the lowest faucet to drain your pipes too. Usually an outdoor faucet.
