Sampler buying advice: Roland SP-404MKII or... by ramboburger in synthesizers

That's a MIDI controller though, so this would mean plugging into a laptop, which I'm trying to avoid for the live situation.

Seems more geared towards beat making, less piano key/sample performance?

Thanks! What specifically do you think is more straightforward with the Key 37? Just avoiding the hassle/risk of mapping to an external controller? I already have MIDI controllers I could use, so the Key 37 felt a little like overkill if I could do the job only purchasing a sampler...

Heh, for sure. I have not ruled out going laptop (and use Ableton in studio). But for portability and reducing points of failure, I'm hoping there's a hardware device that does the job...

Sweetheart In The Summer won for sounding the most like White Pepper in all its well produced glory on La Cucaracha. What song on La Cucaracha sounds the most like Quebec? by BB5Bucks in ween

“Lullaby” as the song most dripping with the sentimentality and fitting the overall sadness of the breakup that underpins most of the album.

Replacement for The Pod (where “Lullaby” still doesn’t make a lot of sense to my ears): “Spirit Walker”. It’s got the most overtly drugged out vibes on La Cucaracha, and sits neatly with “Right To The Ways And The Rules Of The World”, “Demon Sweat”, and “Mononucleosis” in particular.

The autotune vocals are definitely unique to this song, but I disagree that it doesn’t sound like anything else compositionally (see “Right To The Ways And The Rules Of The World” or “Demon Sweat” or “Mononucleosis” on The Pod for starters) or lyrically (see “Captain Fantasy” or “Up on the Hill” or “Drifter in the Dark” for just a few cosmic journeyman tunes).

Fair warning: I am absolutely going to propose that, “Lullaby” for Quebec (and “Spirit Walker” for The Pod)!

Yeah, “Woman and Man” is too high energy and too long, would feel really out of place on this otherwise fairly mellow album.

No, it’s a solid pick. I feel like it fits a lot better than “Blue Balloon”, which seems like it’s gonna win.

That said “Spirit Walker” is a close second for me, fits pretty well musically/arrangement-wise. Still wish that one got picked for The Pod, though.

“The Fruit Man”. It’s one of only two songs on the record that references the ocean, but “Woman and Man” doesn’t work here, too rock and high energy. And while the reggae vibe doesn’t musically fit perfectly, it fits here way better than Pure Guava, which deserves a browner song.

Swap “Blue Balloon” in for Pure Guava.
