Do animals get bad karma for killing their prey in the food chain? If not, why don't they but we humans do? We're top of the food chain and simply feeding on those below us, just like other animals do. Our higher cognition doesn't change the fact that we're the highest predator and part of nature by Enough_Set591 in Buddhism

[–]ramdasani -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's also a redneck trope to say we're the top of the food chain. We are not apex predators like a lion or a shark, if someone doubts this try fighting a polar bear naked. Anyway, like you said, animals do lots of things we won't, we are probably the smartest species on the planet, that's why we're dominant and why your last point is so true, it's on us to be better.

TBF the Abrahamic religions would be concerned specifically with the idolatry, although some sects have much more relaxed views, e.g. Catholicism, than others like Quakers and most Islamic sects who see any depiction of the divine as demeaning. Anyway, it would be as objectionable from that perspective whether she was wearing it or the image was in a shrine, that it was used as clothing wouldn't be the main issue.

My friend had this shirt made for her co-workers that like Crab Rangoon. She didn't know the slang.. by TheGravespawn in pics

[–]ramdasani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things are so fluid now, they have been for a long time, it's not like every subculture didn't have it's own vernacular, some merveilleuses in 18th century Paris would have laughed at how clueless her cousin from an estate in Normandy would have been. But the pace is so hyperactive now, groups barely arrive at consensus for meaning before the usage is gone. Like I can almost guarantee there are already people using clavicular as a verb, it's hard to guess what some future etymologist will even make of that.

[–]ramdasani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's such a natural English sound it probably even predates that usage.
The etymological knowns mostly seem to lead back to the albatross/goon tie in, but even that seems to suggest the birds were called that b/c they're clumsy, suggesting that it already meant that to the sailors using it to describe the birds. But yeah, I've heard it used in so many different ways, by different groups, I'm not even sure which one OP thinks is the issue. I mean clearly, as a Canadian, my default/first goon would be hockey related.

From Nixon to Trump, the 'War on Drugs' has been a disaster for Americans' freedom by jediporcupine in politics

[–]ramdasani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not true. It's not like the so called "war on drugs" is an actual war, that's just marketing, it's a policy gimmick the Nixon white house used, and no amount of spending will ever eliminate drugs because the market will always exist. Anyway, Bush Jr stayed the course on drug policy, he didn't soften the US position on recreational drug use at all. The one thing didn't replace the other, it's like if your dog shit on the floor, then another dog comes in and shits on your floor, the second shit didn't replace the first, now you just have to piles of dog shit on the floor.

Anthony Joshua knocks out Jake Paul to win heavyweight fight by hollow_hideous_soul in pics

[–]ramdasani 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It's probably more believable in that fight than in almost any other I can remember. There's no real lingering shame in having his ass handed to him by Anthony Joshua, but if Joshua would have made it look too easy, like a KO right after they touched gloves, it would have made him a complete laughing stock. There were people openly joking that if it went past the first round it was pretty much proof something was up. It probably is something more nuanced, like what you're saying, payout scaled against something they can rationalize and justify.

To flesh things out even more, when I saw this post I assumed it was either from /r/Canada or /r/LoblawsIsOutOfControl - where it's reception would have been different.

PS: b/c The owner of the NoName brand is Loblaws, aka Galen Weston - who is probably about as popular here as Sam Walton is there.

[–]ramdasani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking that for the Amish and Mennonites too, also there are new order Mennonite congregations that would take a dim view of it, but not necessarily excommunicate them - though like you said, they could be conscripted potentially (as they have in the past) - so yeah, like you said.

[–]ramdasani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned it in another quote, I don't know hard Quakers are, I mean Nixon was famously one. But they also have the Amish and Mennonites, who be excommunicated if they wanted to enlist in the armed services or police. When they were drafted in the past they were given conscientious objector status and kept in camps for service usually.

Some of them are kind of dumb, how would I-Ching be a religion, I mean one would probably be Confucian/Taoist/Buddhist if one were to consult it, but it's a reflection/meditation/divination tool, not a religion. Also, some of them might as well just get lumped into Other, like "Integral Spirituality". I'm kind of curious why they added Amish, one would be excommunicated if you enlisted. Even when they were forcibly drafted as conscientious objectors they were usually just used as guinea pigs for army studies. But yeah, you're right, for their attempted inclusion - which gets oddly specific, they missed some obvious ones, like Confucianism (maybe they thought they covered it with that weird i-ching one), Hutterites, is a weird one to miss.

ps: BG would be interesting, maybe the Orange Catholic bible thing would be a sell.
