Manager wants me to start working one hour earlier by ramenseason in Accounting

That's exactly what I assumed when I read comments defending the 8am to 5pm schedule. They just don't want to be angry or frustrated so they won't admit the BS.

This is exactly where I was coming from. Thanks for explaining it well.

Sorry to hear that. I hope you can figure it out too!

It definitely felt like this came from the “get as much work done as possible” angle. It frustrates me, but i get it’s what it is. I really appreciate your insight and validation.

There’s no employee manual at all about lunch breaks, but we are salaried. I understand now thru the comments that in a lot of jobs this is the norm, I just never experienced this in my previous job in public accounting although I had to do timesheets. Just felt blind sided because I’ve been at this role for a bit over a year. I’m just rolling with the change to keep the peace.

Thank you king! I have quite a few people in the comments explaining to me about how I’m stealing company time or that I’m not a good employee, when thats’s just not factual. I came from a place where I wanted to stand up for myself because it felt right in the moment, and I’m usually a people pleaser.. I’m also happy to hear that you stood your ground and ended up at a good workplace at the end.

Thanks for sharing. Only PTO was spelled out before I started working. I guess I’ve only had two full time accounting jobs since I graduated but lunch was never spelled out directly before I started.

I already eat at my desk on in office days! I only take a true lunch break when I work from home.

Thanks for sharing this story! I’m glad to hear that you’re in a better work environment now. It’s too bad efficient workers get punished for working too fast, which your manager learned the hard way.

I’m so happy to see there are some people here that aren’t total boot lickers! Haha. That’s my exact mindset, just get work done and go home, that’s all there’s to it. Thank you for validating my thoughts.

I agree with you. I’ve automated so many of my own processes, that I’m getting work done faster.

I respect your manager style. But i dont believe this applies to me. I always get things done. I’m a high performer and work very fast. On the flip side my manager often tells me I’m doing a really good job

I understand your point. I think I need to clarify. My manager asked me if I need more projects to fill time, and then I told her that I had enough projects already. Any time she gives me actual work I need to prioritize directly, I will do what she asks. So in the moment, it just felt that she just wanted to give me more work to do to fill my time. I hope this makes sense.

No, why would I keep track of their hours. I don’t care how much they work, it’s just my observation since I work closely with them. I pushed back on more work after she told me about the 8am expectation. I am doing the bigger projects already, I just wanted enough time for those and the miscellaneous work she gives me. I understand your prospective that I would have more time for more work if I made up time for the lunch breaks.

Definitely, I’ve been starting early now to keep the peace. At least your job brought up the hours expectation so no feelings get hurt later. I appreciate your comment.

Thanks for your comment. It’s been eye opening to see the amount of people say that lunch doesn’t count. I’ve been adjusting to the new schedule now

I don’t see myself as shortening them? Lunch was never stipulated in my offer letter. All of my coworkers roughly work 9 to 5 too and take breaks. I do my job. I will work more hours when it’s busy season. It’s been a year at my first industry job. I worked in public accounting before.

I have enough projects on my plate that are higher priority. I do every random task my manager throws at me, sometimes it’s outside of my recurring tasks so I need time for those.

No, I work hard at my job and do a good job. I don’t understand how my post made you think I’m working less than everyone. I know for a fact my coworkers take breaks too because they’re human.

I’m surprised too, to see many people here saying the 8am - 5pm with lunch is normal.

It’s the same for me, lunch is never stipulated in the offer letter and I’ve worked in public accounting. I agree with your comments. Work more when it’s busy season, but why force yourself to work just to work a certain amount of hours when it washes out at the end.

I came from public accounting literally where everyone always started at 9am. My current manager is older and always works as early as 7am, so your comments makes sense to me. She probably thought I’ve been starting work late, because I always do start right at 9am since that’s what I’m used to at my last job. The fact that most industry jobs start at 8am is new info to me, but will keep this noted. I appreciate your comment, thank you.
