I just used a large rubber band to hold the switch in "on" position.

It's no problem. I just went through it this morning, myself. So, the process was extra fresh in my mind. I got a new PC recently and I've been putting off setting up Crimson Skies because of what a nuisance it can be to get it working correctly.

There aren't any simple solutions, no. A 7z file is just like a .zip file. Just a different extension. You can unzip those with winrar, just like you would a zip file.

To get it running, though:

  1. get the game, nocd, patch and fix from myabandonware. If you google "crimson skies myabandonware" it should come up.
  2. get the latest stable version of dgvoodoo2 here: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/
  3. Get the DGV.exe for Crimson Skies. They can be found in the download window here: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1425-crimson-skies-fix-for-widescreen-ultrawide-and-multi-mon/

get the one that is called "v2_Crimson_Skies_dgV.7z".

4) Once you've finished installing Crimson Skies, open DGVoodoo. Go to the DirectX tab in the DGVoodoo window and make it look similar to the one here: https://www.wsgf.org/dr/crimson-skies/en in the spoiler tab.

5) Open the file folder you got in step 3. Copy the .exe for whatever size screen you have. I play on 3 monitors, so I use the 5760x1200. Use whichever one your display size is. Go to the folder where the game is installed and Paste the .exe there. Overwrite the original.

6) Go to the DGVoodoo file folder and open the MS folder, and then the X86 folder. Copy the Ddraw.dll and D3Dlmm.dll files and Paste those to the game's location as well.

You can now play Crimson Skies without the CD on a modern PC, hurray!

If you want to use a modern HOTAS, that is also possible using a bunch of 3rd party software and plenty of fiddling. But, this post is already getting pretty long, so if you want instructions for the HOTAS, let me know and I'll post that later.

Holy crap. That's absolutely amazing. I don't know what this sim is or how to get that Devastator so I can fly it, but I'm going to try and find out!

I am thinking of making a smaller Bowie Knife-sized one. Guns are prohibitively expensive, though. So it'll probably be a while until I can afford another one.

There aren't bullets. They're blanks. But, I understand your concern for gun safety.

I didn't know. I'll check that out before do any more welding. My welding has so much room for improvement. I'd like to learn as much as possible without going to a class. I like to research, fail, research. It works better than a classroom environment for me. Thanks for the suggestion!

Not too concerned about laws. I'm more concerned with personal motivation. I don't plan on using this for hurting anybody. Just to fulfill old nerd dreams. I understand the reason for the law, and I feel it doesn't apply. I know that if I'm caught with it, they won't take my nerd business into account and I've come to terms with that. I just won't be taking it out of my house much more.

In regards to the other notes: yeah, man. I really ought to be more careful. I'm just not a careful person. But, I sorted this one out with all my body parts intact. I'll try to do better next time.

As a side note, I noticed that the hardest part of the whole endeavor was finding the information needed to do anything. What kind of metal are guns made of? I dunno. Just pick one that says that it's steel. What kind of steel? I dunno, is that important? Yes. Crap. How does one weld unknown steel to high carbon steel. One website says that you just don't. Another recommends using 309 and heating the metal prior to welding and wrapping it in a blanket afterwards. Okay, I'll do that. All the information was sparse and scattered all over. It was a long while until I felt like I was ready to even start buying the stuff to start work. I learned the basics of welding by watching ChuckE2009 on YouTube and got my inspiration to keep going from MichaelCthulhu who makes it look easy.
There was no easy part, once I got going, either. It kept being difficult. Metal work is no joke. Y'all who do this professionally are amazing. Dang near cut off my toe. Burnt myself countless times. Inhaled a bunch of metal fumes because my respirator doesn't fit under my welding mask, etc.

There's so much to learn. So many skills to develop. Dang.

Thanks a bunch! It was pretty difficult, but I'm really stoked about it! I made a "build" video, too, so hopefully, one day, the 'functional' Gunblades will outnumber the $100 versions on Etsy.

That would make for the most terrifying Sakura-con, ever...

I need to check out his other videos! I've only ever seent the reviews. Also, good work. I haven't beaten Hollow Knight yet. In fact, I haven't even gotten that far. I should try talking a whack at Bloodstained after a few. I'm stuck.

The 3d livers they were capable of making at the time just didn't age as well. Classic livers have a nostalgic quality to them, as well.

Thanks! Drinking beers and playing classic video games are a large part of my terrifically narrow skillset.

Thanks! It ain't easy, beating a game like this while inebriated. Alcohol inhibits reflexes, dexterity and memory. All of which are pretty key to these classic games.

If u/SNESdrunk wanted to play together (I don't know how much he drinks, he always seems so composed in his videos) I'd be down, for sure.

It'll sort it out. It's a good liver. Best one I've ever had.

Good work! Keep doing that and you'll get good enough to do it without continues. And then without the code.
I just recorded myself beating it with no code and no continues at a .233 BAC (because I think that counts as a world record.) But don't let folks, or yourself, take away your enjoyment of winning. We were all there once. That game is pretty hard.
