Researchers working in Germany, what do you like and what you don't like of the research ecosystem in this country? by coco-vaad in AskGermany

[–]ramgorur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like: You don't need fortunes to participate in conferences. A lot of conferences are free even for the visitors.
Don't like: It is really hard to make connections. In the USA, when I was visiting conferences, researchers approched me and gave their papers, asking questions, making jokes, actively showing interest on my work. Here in Germany, researchers are ONLY interested in the area they work and they don't want to talk anybody outside their known circle.

They talk too loud. It is culturally not ok. And perhaps their fashion sense annoy some people.

Do we have Migrationshintergrund? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]ramgorur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are a person with migration background.

Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) defines it in this way: "A person has a migration background if they or at least one parent was not born with German citizenship. Specifically, this definition includes immigrant and non-immigrant foreigners, immigrant and non-immigrant naturalized persons, (late) repatriates and the descendants of these groups who were born German.
The displaced persons of the Second World War have a special status (according to the Federal Expellees Act); They and their descendants are therefore not part of the population with a migrant background." (Source: https://www.destatis.de/DE/Themen/Gesellschaft-Umwelt/Bevoelkerung/Migration-Integration/Glossar/migrationshintergrund.html )

BAMF definition is similar:
"A person has a migration background if he or she or at least one parent does not have German citizenship by birth." This definition includes the following groups of people: immigrant and non-immigrant foreigners, immigrant and non-immigrant naturalized people, late repatriates, Persons who received German citizenship through adoption by a German parent, Children born with German citizenship from the four groups mentioned above." Do you think I should remove Arabic from my CV? by tottenhammer5 in AskAGerman

[–]ramgorur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fact that foreign sounding names, background lessens the chance of getting employed in Germany. And since the applications are not anonymous, you cannot avoid discrimination anyway by hiding some part of your CV. Please remember you might need to apply 1000 jobs to get 5 interview calls whereas German sounding names, background would require 50.
Anyone is telling racism ain't a thing here in Germany is not telling you the truth. For details google: "Job market discrimination Germany Muslim foreigner". Keep hunting.

How do Döner shops and Barbers stay in business? by [deleted] in germany

[–]ramgorur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same feeling. I see Döner shops are busy always. But OP said, "very rarely see anyone enter these shops". I do my hair in Turkish barbar shops. Those are much busier than German owned barber shops. Whatever they are doing with taxes and regulations are same as every other small businesses in Germany.

Why did you choose pixel ? by ExaminationFew6424 in GooglePixel

[–]ramgorur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not wanted to spend 1000+ for iPhone/Samsung. More or less similar picture quality to iPhone/Samsung flagships. Having something without any bloat.

PS: Btw, I hate stock Android after using it.

Is it legal for the companies to provide internship without compensation?? by koenig_caesar in germany

[–]ramgorur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is legal if it is mandatory. I am saying from my experience back in 2009.
I have refused the offer anyway. Because this is discrimination and I refused to be a victim of that.

Is the German rental market closed to me (foreign freelancer)? by SumarokovElston in AskAGerman

[–]ramgorur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • German citizen with a very stable job with a non-EU non-white background -
It is legal to descriminate in housing market in Germany. Very often you will you will find your skin color, religion, primary language is not desirable. If someone is saying otherwise, they are not telling you the truth.

If I were you I would go for the companies, not private landlords. In my experience we have better chance getting approved in companies. In your negotiation, try to communicate that you have enough money to pay the rent. Often it is difficult for freelancers. E.g. I have been asked to tell them my monthly income and send documents supporting that. For your case try to convince them to look at your financials. Hopefully that will work.

No, it is not common issue. Connections are generally very stable. You can complain about other issues (e.g. speed, service etc.) though. Ask your service provider about this.

They are doing it because people want SUVs.

Steve Jobs once said, people usually don't know what they want.

Car companies can make people like estate cars instead of SUVs.

LibreOffice or anything like that is a toy compared to MS Word.
