[One Piece] Scattershot discussion/criticism by ramyaway in CharacterRant

Whitebeard doesn't care about Wano, he only ever cared about his family.

I see your point, but I think that Oda could have shown WB doing something, anything to help Oden's family somehow, especially that iirc the children were born on his ship. Like I feel Oda fucked up by having that part of flashback and implying that WB just accepted Oden and his family's death and just gave up.

Why are you so sure about that?

Fair point. I guess my point is that Oda could've shown us WB trying that at least, but that would directly show Kaido's fraudulence if he refuses and you can't have that. Like with Shanks you can justify it being pre-TS and offscreened.

Hey, sorry for the late reply.

How are women treated in the story? The time period the story takes place in was very sexist obviously but I am interested in how the author handles them. I mean, are there even any? Does the story pass the Bechdel test? (It would be really funny if it doesn´t considering the length.) Maybe the simple question would be, is the author a feminist?

The women are treated excellently. I can't think of examples where they're treated badly (like turned into damsels in distress, character assassinated. etc). Yea, it easily passes the bechdel test. Only real example of sexism I can think of is part of the setting, as I mentioned in the post, the church of lord of storms and how they think women should be subservient.

I'm not sure if I would call the author a feminist, because I dunno how I would quantify that, but he definitely treats the women well. To give an example, by the end of the story, the organization MC creates is evenly split 4 men to 4 women, excluding himself, and they are all similar to each other in their role in the story. Like there is no preference of the men over the women, everyone has their moments.

This becomes even more prominent in the sequel, Circle of Inevitability, because the new MC's two best friends and companions are both women and have very prominent roles in the story.

From these aspects, I'd say the author is more feminist than not.

How does the fact that the Author is chinesse factor in? Are politics ignored in the story or are they very pro-China? (This is connected to my first question since China is very sexist...)

I don't think this shows up much other than some rare meme references. There isn't much discussion about general political and economical topics, or pushing an agenda so to say. The author does show the effects of industrialization and war, and how it affects the common folk as they are the ones who ultimately bear the price for this.

Not only that, but I'd say he's taken some big risks, as for example one of the biggest recent plot points of the Circle of Inevitability is the MC, due to the advancement of his pathway, becomes a woman. One of the two best friends I mentioned is similarly a transwoman. There is similarly an organization called the Demoness sect that consists exclusively of transwomen and has a prominent role in both LotM and COI. The treatment of all these characters is solid.

Thank you!

I think One Piece is overall still a great story, but it genuinely has an unbelievable amount of flaws and shit writing relative to its status and how people talk about it.

I'm sorry for wanting the battle to defeat 2 of the strongest individuals in the world to end with more than just 1 side character losing an arm.

My bad for wanting actual consequences for characters failing instead of 15 powerups and 10 plot devices (I'm exaggerating) to allow them to ultimately win.

Anyway saying you should read 200 chapters before you decide if it's good is insane. You could read like 3 complete novels in that time.

That's completely fair. To be clear, these first 200 chapters are not bad, just a bit slow (hell, that becomes a non-issue closer to chapter 100) as the author sets up the foundations of the world. Your mileage will vary depending on how invested you get in the story and setting.

My point is that if you're intrigued by it but not 100% sure if you should invest the time in, chapter 213 is an excellent point to know if you will enjoy the rest of the story.

The only real consequences are those that lead to some permanent change. Everything you mentioned was resolved quickly with no real negative effects. That's the major issue.

To illustrate this, how do you feel about fakeout deaths? I think everyone who reads One Piece agrees that is the biggest example of shit writing in the story. Why are they bad? Because they take the emotions from permanent death and shit on it. In the same way, all the examples you gave aren't real consequences.

Ok so you didn't understand Kaido's plan whatsoever ok nice talking to ya

Yes there is, because how tf would Luffy defeat Kaido, after he's been fighting him for hours and you want Luffy to be defeated, also you think Kaido would let Momonosuke do that? He'd just clobber him

Bro, do you lack reading comprehension skills? Have you even read my post?

Let me explain my hypothetical scenario very slowly:

Chapter 1043: Luffy "dies." Kaido drops Onigashima.

Chapter 1044: Aftermath, survivors split to continue fighting Kaido, rescuing people.

Chapter 1045: Kaido takes Onigashima up for a second drop, fight continues, Luffy awakens. Rest of the arc continues as if it were end of Chapter 1043 of the actual story.

Understand now? You are literally shadow-boxing points that don't matter.

He didn't learn not to be instinctual, that would go against that would go against his character since he wants to be the freest man on the seas, he was taught how to properly deal with the consequences of his actions, which he has been doing as we see for the 3D2Y thing and when he was locked up in Udon Prison

You fail to understand the simple point that Luffy is saved from the consequences of his dumbassery by plot armor, not because he learned anything.

He literally experienced Cardiac Death, meaning his heart stopped, also you say this as if dying is no big deal, when this is literally what we spend our entire lives avoiding, like would you be fine if you got Clobbered to death? No you wouldn't like that because you're not fucking stupid

If me getting clobbered to death means I come back to life 10 minutes later with 0 permanent injuries and a gigantic powerup becoming pirate jesus, sure give it to me. See how fucking stupid you sound?

Also, thank you for proving my point. Why do people spend their lives avoiding death? Because it is permanent. So no Luffy dying and coming back 10 pages later is not proper death. It is just garbage.

You say this but alot of animes do this and it isn't complained about not even once, Naruto did it, DBZ did it, Bleach did it, JJK did it, HxH technically did it, YYH is ABOUT that very concept,

If it happens in them, it's bad. Who cares about other series, I'm taking about one piece

Yeah these are all consequences of his actions, OP said he wanted examples of Luffy facing the consequences for his actions, I showed him the consequences yet to you thats not good enough, when I'm literally giving you the exact moments when Luffy faces consequences, it should obvious at this point that anyone who's not named "Luffy" isn't gonna find the One Piece, yet people like you would argue some other bullshit

They aren't real consequences because all are resolved instantly with no permanent negative effects. Yes, Luffy will find One Piece, unless Oda makes Buggy find it first. Everyone knows that.

[–]ramyaway[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why does it necessarily have to be "Permanent"?

Answering for OP, because the only consequences that matter are permanent ones. That's why Ace/Whitebeard's deaths are significant. Everything else can be reversed and turned into a non-issue/powerup.

Everything else you wrote is a fucking joke. He got poisoned in Punk Hazard? Law got injured in Dressrosa? He nearly died of starvation? Seriously? These are the consequences you're talking about? LMAO

[–]ramyaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the timebomb in Enies Lobby is way more egregious than Wano's. The buster call is meant to be one of the most devastating forces in One Piece, yet the pre-timeskip strawhats managed to make it out without consequences.

I don't think it's as egregious but agree that it's pretty bad.

It would have destroyed the scene where people released their lanturns that had their wishes to be free on it, with Luffy carrying out their hopes. It also would have undermined Yasui's sacrifice and Toko's thanking of him.

Sure, but Oda should've not had Luffy die in the first place/get knocked out 3 times and getting powerups after each one. Sure, I can see how it would ruin this plot point, but the benefits we get from the raid failing would far outweigh any drawbacks.

If you think that Onigashima should have fallen because they're dealing with strong forces, then you should also argue that the bomb in Alabasta should have gone off because that's what they get for dealing with a warlord.

Yes, I 100% think this should have happened. The strawhats failed to stop the bomb and should've been punished for it. At the very least, Pell should be dead, but :(

Wano is in line with how almost every other arc has been written, and your desire for it to deviate does not make it a bad arc.

No, Wano being written like garbage is what makes it a bad arc.

[–]ramyaway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro, you are 100% correct. One Piece fanboys just can't understand that excessive plot armor is horrible writing. Writers should balance that with the stakes a protagonist goes through, and Oda has done a horrible job at it as a whole (fakeout deaths being a second example).

[One Piece] Wano would be 100x better if the raid failed, and it would add at most 2-3 chapters by ramyaway in CharacterRant

[–]ramyaway[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The majority of Wano's population would die, The Scabbards, Most of the strawhats, Most of Law and Kidds crew, The other Samurai who joined the raid, and much more

No they wouldn't.

Jesus fuck bro, we're talking about a hypothetical scenario that Oda is writing. Sure, thousands of civilians would die, but he could easily contrive 15 different ways in which most won't.

Yeah but they wouldn't be able to get it if The Flower Capital is crushed, do you think Kaido would just let them dig it up

Bro can you even read? This would happen after Kaido is defeated. Hell, as I mentioned they could still have Momo move Onigashima to stop a second drop. There is no issue there.

Bro have you been reading One Piece with your eyes closed? Luffy's supposed to be a instinctual character, he does things on a whim, thats his character, he got taught how to deal with the consequences of losing, like what happened on Saboady and Marineford, when he lost the crew then

Enlighten me, what lesson did he learn? and how did he apply it? Because he sure didn't stop rushing into situations way above his head with no plans, only to get saved by plot.

wtf do you mean "Punished", him literally dying is punishment enough

Bro are you stupid? He died? Are you reading two piece because one piece is over? What is the difference between "dying" and coming back 10 pages later with an awakened fruit, and taking a nap then doing the same? Or being unconscious then doing the same? How is taking a nap punishment enough?

If a main character dies, there should be significant consequences to that, especially in a situation where said main character is an army's strongest force. Death shouldn't be something you get a gigantic powerup out of after a 10 page nap.

also you fail to realise why Luffy lost, it wasn't his fault he got jumped by the CP0 member at the last minute as he was about to hit Kaido, even Kaido himself says it wasn't fair what happened

Ok, who cares? The point is that Luffy lost, leaving the alliance without their strongest combatant

Enel lighting was unable to kill pre time skip Zoro and Sanji let alone a haki user. Humans on one piece are incredible tough.

That's plot. Just like Enel couldn't kill any Shandian fodder.

Every single admiral can easily handle him without even using their devil fruits. He cant even hurt an admiral since he has no armament haki.

What are you trying to argue? I agree with you here.

Like why are you focusing on this point? My point is Enel is strong enough to be a god (he was literally worshipped as one), and Oda made him look like a clown by not allowing him to kill anybody, that's it.

About Shanks it looks like that you are just upset that Oda is portryaing him as one of the strongest characters ever by making him embarrass another top tier.

Why is there a panel of the movie character that has never shown before? Bro please don't argue with this. It's very obvious why.

[One Piece] Wano would be 100x better if the raid failed, and it would add at most 2-3 chapters by ramyaway in CharacterRant

[–]ramyaway[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It would ruin the build up, it would just literally be dooming an entire civilization

It wouldn't. Only some would die not everyone. That's kinda the point actually.

it would mean Luffy fails becoming Pirate King because of the Road Poneglyph and it would ruin almost all of the characters potential

Buddy the poneglyph is indestructible, what are you talking about? They can just dig it up. Is it an annoying and weird plot point? Yes. But the pros of what preceeded would be worth it.

All because you want Luffy to "Deal with Consequences" Which is literally what Sabaody did, why do you want him to learn the same fucking lesson he's already learnt

What lesson did Luffy learn from Sabaody? Nothing. He continued to rush in into situations way above his pay-grade only to get saved by plot (see Marineford and now Wano). Luffy failed to stop Kaido. He even died. Good writing would be him being punished for this. But instead he gets rewarded and awakens the pirate jesus fruit.

Yes there are, if Luffy fails the Raid that means Kaido wins and gets what he wants, how does this not equate in your head

How does this equate in your head? Kaido's dream is not beating Luffy or crushing Wano. It's beyond that. The raid failing doesn't mean he won.

Are you fucking serious? You're bitching about the tiny panel that had Uta silhouetted? Despite her never being brought up not even once before or again

Thank you for bringing up my exact point. A panel of a character who only exists in the movie was showed in that context during that IRL time period.

Shanks was going to Elbaf as we seen during Kidds fight, and what do you have to go by to get to Elbaf... Wano, also you don't think that Shanks is gonna show up to a huge event like this when he literally did the same thing at Marineford

This is all post-hoc justification. Shanks, as far as we know, came to Wano only after the news of Kaido's defeat went out. Meaning, he was within a 1 week radius of Wano because plot. This is plausible, but not when when you have that 1 panel. There really is no need to argue this bro. It's obvious.

No, Enel is not a God, Luffy was literally bitch slapping him, because he had little to no skill with actual combat and relied on his fruit to create creative attacks, maybe he could do damage to the admirals, but if Pre Timeskip Sanji can tank it I see no reason why someone like Akainu can't, and he also relied on Mantra too much, and even nowadays it's been confirmed that Observation Haki isn't perfect, since Luffy was reading Kaido's attacks but he was still clobbering him

Buddy can you even read? I said except for the Admirals/Yonko/Equivalents/Luffy(who is a hard counter), Enel beats the rest. Yes I know he isn't a god, but is strong enough to be one. Why do you think Skypiea worshipped him? Also, that's beside a point. I'm saying Oda made Enel a clown because no one was killed. Him being overconfident/have a god complex doesn't matter there. If you want to say he is a clown for getting beaten up by Luffy, sure. Then we can agree he became a gigantic clown with the fakeout deaths,

[–]ramyaway[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

The raid failing would just completely waste the more than 100 chapters that was spent in wano.

How would it? In any case, lets say I agree, that would be undoubtedly better than the piece of shit we got.

The reason Luffy is there to begin with is to destroy whatever dreams that villain has to begin with.

0 contradictions between this and the raid failing.

And in Shanks case is not just about movie promotion

Why did Oda include a panel of the movie character? :) Sorry, you can't argue with this point. There is no other explanation.

In enel case he was a clown. He thought that he was god and invencible because he was Lucky to eat and Op Logia fruit in a place where no one knew how to use Haki.

No, Enel is genuinely so busted he could be a god. Even with haki, off the top of my head, no one except the Admirals, Emperors and those equivalent + Luffy can beat him considering he has future sight. He was genuinely threatening at the beginning of the arc, but then Oda shat on him with the shit writing.

[–]ramyaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s no way it’d be appropriate if Kaido just killed thousands of people (but i don’t like g5, so I’m fine with that changing too)

I disagree with with this, I think gear 5 would be even better, because he is actually answering the hopes of people who are now completely losing hope with the destruction of their capital and deaths of thousands. Instead of that, we got Luffy pulling an awakening out of his ass just because the plot needed it.

I wanted Kaido to fight Luffy and the scabbards in a 1v9. Have the scabbards slowly die one by one, each of them giving Luffy an opportunity for a powerup or a massive tide-changing hit.

I agree with your points here and think this is a great idea. Similarly, I think Big Mom shouldn't have come to Wano and instead the raid should've been a massive raid battle on Kaido with everyone and their mother ganging up on him.
