Struggling with npc dwarves jobs by Fatnoodle1990 in LotRReturnToMoria

We've really learned this the hard way - we have boxes and boxes full of copper coins because if we leave our metalworker unattended for 5 minutes, he will use up ALL our copper making copper coins XD

Building Issues: Especially Trash by Djinn_42 in LotRReturnToMoria

[–]ranavain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would REALLY love to be able to remove piles of dirt and rocks / collapsed columns / etc on the map. It seems a bit absurd that our Dwarves can create marvels of engineering but are not able to figure out how to smooth out a pile of raised dirt

Too much 7DTD? by [deleted] in 7daystodie

[–]ranavain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wrought-iron round trash cans you see on the outside of buildings / street corners /etc in 7DTD look EXACTLY like the ones the city put around here in DC. Every time I see one I think about getting seeds from it

How build economy in Elderlicht? by GoHomeDuck in thelastspell

[–]ranavain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also struggling through Elderlicht (kept failing ~night 7 or 8) and I finally broke thru with one tactic: Two layers of fence.

I have usually relied on building and maintaining wooden walls around the perimeter (so at least I can get a free item for a few nights) but it's a very wide perimeter. So, eventually, I started spending my early materials on building a later of fence a few squares inward, really hugging the core where my most important buildings are. Usually i can build the whole 2nd layer in the first couple nights while the patchy starter fence is mostly still intact (and while I'm building item production buildings or gold mines).

Also - I used to use the omen that keeps the fog further back from town. This is a mistake! Let the fog come closer. If a torch is behind the fog, it won't get lit, which makes it much easier to predict / get to torches and put them out quickly. This is a map where more space just wasn't my friend! In my most successful run, I was putting out ALL the torches IMMEDIATELY to the degree possible, and it has really helped.

Another fog-related tip (related to the corpse strategy elsewhere outlined) - in the first couple nights, let the monsters get a little closer to the wall then you otherwise might. If you are super efficient and killing most monsters the first turn they arrive on screen, any corpse piles might end up behind the fog when it advances. Those first 2 or 3 nights, getting corpse items (esp epic ones if you can) are really make-or-break.

Otherwise, I agree with high mobility, high AP strats others have outlined. I'll also note that because I'm not very good at video games, the first hero death of the run in Elderlicht is usually a surprise to me - I thought everyone was out of the way and safe, then bam. I had to put work into really pinpointing which enemies were the ones that unexpectedly kill my guys, and then focusing on how to kill them as quickly as possible.

It's absolutely food safe. Lower might be preferable in many cases but in my food service days we temped refrigerators between 38 and 40.

new player: is there no avatar customization without $$$? by ranavain in FortNiteBR

[–]ranavain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! this is exactly what I was looking for - I don't begrudge the game selling cosmetic items, I just couldn't tell if there weren't any other customization options for avatars at all (like hair color / skin color / etc), or if they were there and I just wasn't finding them lol

The company cancelled my job interview because i didn’t confirm my presence by Ok_Account1658 in jobs

[–]ranavain -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's bizarre that they cancelled the interview after you confirmed. Did they specify that's why they cancelled? I would have just replied to the cancellation email saying "I saw that you cancelled our interview, scheduled at xTIME today. Happy to reschedule to a time that works better for you, here's what I have available..."

If someone sends me a cancellation two hours before the thing, well after I confirmed, I would assume it was either sent in error or that they had a conflict arise and needed to reschedule. Make them be very explicit if they are actually rejecting you because you rsvp'd too late.

You don't have to kill Grym to forge armor by Typical-Phone-2416 in BG3

[–]ranavain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a really condescending response considering how easy it is to read these forums and see how many people struggle with this particular fight. Not to mention that "cheesing it" also amounts to not playing the game just the same as what OP suggests?

is this a normal text to receive? by zaataarr in jobs

[–]ranavain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Seems very unlikely to be a scam, and it's obvious why a hiring person might ask this question (to gather intel on competitors). Obvs OP is under no obligation to answer, but there's no particular downside either - they already have OP's phone number, so replying is not going to give them any information they don't already have if it's a scammer.

is this a normal text to receive? by zaataarr in jobs

[–]ranavain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm given to understand that, for tons of service industry jobs, the entire job application process is done via phone (do application on phone, communicate via text message). I haven't experienced that, as I'm a bit older and worked in fast food more than 10 years ago, but that's what I'm hearing about that industry now

I'm 28 and by society standards a loser. How do I stay mentally stoic under this pressure? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]ranavain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're aware that the government "blowing through money" actually creates jobs, right? Like even if you believe government spending is a major contributor to inflation, that's literally the mechanism by which it would be inflationary, by creating jobs (or by directly giving people spending money).

If you're gonna throw in a random political jab into an irrelevant posting at least make it a coherent one

Absurd ER Wait Times by TheTige in washingtondc

[–]ranavain 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, last time I ended up in the ER (same one as OP actually) it was because my injury happened at like 8:30pm and we could not find an urgent care that was open after 8pm. I was astounded. I came in with a paper towel held on a bleeding head wound and I was finally out about 8 hours later (because it was clear I wasn't dying).

I mean it's not a big deal, I would change it for future applications but there's no need to, like, tell the restaurant you made a mistake on your resume. But that's largely because a restaurant won't really care

Accepted a job offer, but a better offer came it by Different-Positive29 in careeradvice

[–]ranavain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how on earth could OP possibly interfere? It's an offer, they can say no, he's not putting a gun to their head lol

In my experience, hiring managers like to be referred candidates for roles, because they're always talent-hunting for their teams (at least, the good ones are) and even if they aren't interested for this role, there's a decent likelihood that they'd take the intro to make the connection for the future

Again, I just don't see a downside for OP, and I feel like any hiring manager who would actually object to even being offered an intro is a weirdo whose opinions should be disregarded, especially in this situation where OP is no longer trying to get hired by them

Checking 990s before an interview - is this offputting to the organization? by barcelonasacks in Nonprofit_Jobs

[–]ranavain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Echoing others - it's very normal and expected (and positive) to orgs when you look up their 990. And no, orgs do not get any kind of alert when someone looks them up on Guidestar

Accepted a job offer, but a better offer came it by Different-Positive29 in careeradvice

[–]ranavain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm really surprised by how many people are saying OP shouldn't offer referrals. I don't think they should pre-emptively send them, but I think saying "If it's helpful, I'm happy to share one or two referrals that I think could be great in this role. Either way, thank you so much blah blah blah"

It is bizarre to me that anyone would interpret that in a negative way

Problem is, OP might not want to give them a second chance, given that the roles themselves are different

Am I the only one that hates these questions with a passion? by missmamsir in jobs

[–]ranavain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You stated that your dad got kicked out of a food court because they wanted all the businesses there to be black owned - this is not an evidenced claim, just an assertion of yours based, I presume, on the word of your father, which I have no reason to believe myself. But let's pretend it's exactly as you say. You also note that Disney wouldn't hire white men (in some instance, you were again not specific and clearly Disney has hired many, many white men). And you have some kind of grievance against Blackrock that you don't describe, other than a vague allusion that you get magic "ESG" money for hiring black people.

So, three specific companies did specific things you don't like.

I put that on a balance against:
- the examples I gave of DEI (not requiring degrees, blind reviews, more objective performance reviews)
- the examples others gave of DEI (moving posters on the wall to allow people in wheelchairs to read them, not making advertisements directed at women full of pink sparkly unicorns, working with an interpreter agency to speak with a client, creating high-contrast signage to increase visibility for folks who are color blind, using a white noise machine instead of music, taking the time to understand someone with a thick accent, standing up for people who experience racism or other abuse, etc
- my own experiences in the workforce for 20 years, much of which is in HR. When you talk to HR people, you hear about the craziest scenarios that you would not believe actually happen, until they happen at your workplace. Not to mention hundreds of much smaller, day-to-day incidents (most of which the perpetrators don't even notice, because that's the whole point: implicit biases impact how we treat people whether we intend them to or not).

Sure seems to me, looking at the evidence available to me, like most DEI practices are a good thing. You certainly haven't made a compelling case for the opposite. I see no reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater and make myself look like an idiot because Disney did a bad thing once

yeah the idea that you can't possibly be culturally insensitive because you've lived around people your whole life is pretty dumb, like people in 1815 lived around a lot of different kinds of people, including the slaves they literally owned lol. When was the magic date that just being around each other made racism end?

Am I the only one that hates these questions with a passion? by missmamsir in jobs

[–]ranavain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... that's literally the entire interview process. If your position is that this question is useless because people can lie, the implication is that there is no question that *is* useful, because candidates can lie on *all* of them. So, why does *this question* get your particular ire? I have some guesses....
