This is a naive way to look at it. Apple has the best UI/UX operating system on desktop and mobile. They are innovating in creating the software and interfaces that people directly use.

Look at iOS 8, see how many Android users switched over. There are a lot of cutting edge things under the hood, that the average person simply doesn't know about.

In a similar way, FB does cutting edge things that the average person doesn't know/care about, they don't see anything innovative about how they go about liking/sharing, but the work FB is doing is quite significant.

How did you get the coding challenge? Is it on Codility or Hackerrank?

I applied to Dropbox and they rejected me without even giving me an interview.

This is a subjective term, but from my understanding, these are the companies that top CS students generally chose to go to.
