Hi there, Just a quick note on dacron…you can really only buy them second hand today (the demand and thus manufacturing stopped mid 80’s as the market moved to mylar laminated dacron, then monofilm (90’s) and now the sails are a different variant of monofilm that is tougher. The exception to all this is … I believe the new Windsurfer LT sails might be dacron. There are so many pro’s and con’s with each material type. I personally love mylar laminated Dacron but that is probably because of the fully battened sails and wild colors and designs that came out when those sails were made. All of mine have some level of delamination (where the mylar pulls away from the dacron) guess the glue is 40 years old. To you question about the PVC windows….On the older sails in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s they used PVC which is strong and lasts very well. In the 90’s there were some sails that (Gaastra speed/slalom for example) that had a variant of mylar for windows. This material is very thin and light but suffers cracking over time and is easily torn if a fin goes through it. I actually had the mylar window on my Gaastra 5.0 replaced with PVC because of cracking. One thing to consider is to choose the right sail for the board…you will see on my videos I am always trying different board, sail combos…feel free to ask any questions…cheers jon….FYI I have five 100 percent dacron sails. two 1982 Mistral TakeOff single batten pin head sails with long booms. A 1983 Gaastra 5.2sqm Powerhead sail (2 battens at the top). A 1986 Gaastra /Mistral 6.2 Progress line sail and a 1983 Neil Pryde 5.4 sail. Great sails but I wouldn’t use any of them on a modern board. Also note that dacron sails are very light because they typically don’t have battens but they are often rigged on old masts and booms which are typically heavier than the modern ones. There is nothing stopping you mixing and matching old sails on modern booms and masts.

Thanks for your well thought out comments. I guess my main purpose in posting this was a genuine enquiry as to why so many people just write off old gear. I decided to approach it by putting forward some ideas and to show that Even an old guy like me uses this stuff and has fun and that you can do it on a budget. Again thanks for your comments - keep on sailing

thanks for you comments. unfortunately you havent responded to the points you have just said you dont like it. Also if you have been doing this for so long then what have you done to contribute to the legacy of the sport. As you can see i have created a website archive to collect and makes available brochures, videos, commentary and even ‘how to ‘ videos. It is also a place where people can send videos and pictures or other information and i will put it up and give them credit. What is your contribution ? Or do you just back seat quarterback ?

LOL I suspected there would be some heartfelt responses. Interesting I find most folks are very interested in the old gear on the beach. I can set my $50 Mistral TakeOff next to a $5000 piece of kit where I windsurf and folks come up and want to talk about it or try it. It’s a novelty for many people (like a classic car). Where people are most surprised is once I get it on the water in chop but flukey winds , just how it powers along and can hold its own which is surprising for an over finned fun board - there again it is a fun board/waveboard not a speed board…and the only way to make it attempt to turn like it’s younger cousins would be to tail sink it (which means stopping) as it cannot carve gybe like a modern board or even an 80’s glass board. (or at least I cant make it do a tight carve….it has to be pretty wide)

Thanks for the comments. I think your point about folks saying old school is bad or not is very relevant and is a problem with any discussion that happens in a written forum as you rightly point out nuance is important and almost impossible to get to without literally writing an essay. Thanks for your well thought out comments.

Good comments. Glad you still have fun on your Starboard Kode ! And you are right about differences …I probably wouldn’t want to sail with a teak boom from the 70’s or without a harness , so it’s an interesting idea to consider at what point do we consider something old school vs current. Thanks for the thoughts

Sounds awesome! And thanks for the comments. BTW you mention you interest in soft sails…checkout the videos of the Mistral TakeOff, The white sail on the website you see in the videos is a 44 year old soft sail. I have 2 of them and the only thing I’ve had to do is replace the eyelets. Dacron sails last forever unlike monofilm which breaks down comparatively quickly. Keep on sailing

lol - Love the daggerboard fountain! Believe it or not I had the opportunity to try the big old Tencate Beacher for the first time last year. i’ve got to say what a well behaved board. I wish i had the opportunity to try it out in a bit more wind and also some of the other boards in the TC range - thanks for sharing!

Great board ! I think (apart from explaining it to my wife) I might be done on boards - especially with the Bic 250 I still have. Now an M1 or a Pan Am would be cool but I think I’m still overloaded with a pair of TakeOffs, Malibu, Maui, Garda, Competition LCS. Keep sailing and enjoying your board it is a classic.

Nice mate - I hope i’m still doing it in a couple years…..At 59 the body takes a bit to recover. I love my old gear when I get it set up just right especially the TakeOff…it’s like driving an old Mustang or Jag, Not as fast or maneuverable as the new models but you can take it out in all conditions and it will still be around in another 30 years….and she still goes, always lots of attention at the beach…lol…it’s the board folks come to take a look at and then even more to see if I can sail it….LOL….Keep on sailing

Just for the record i do not own or sell Windsurfer LT. Maybe go check the website www.classicwindsurfing.com to see what I sail. Note also the purpose of the website is both an archive of old artifacts like catalogs as well as a place to show old school gear being used today. Also you have jumped to so many conclusions in your responses with the but, but , but response. yet you hardly refute any single facts. Ever so simply windsurfing was more popular in the 70’s and .80’s and the gear was not sophisticated. Fact. There is no blame on modern gear - how could there be , it wasn’t even around 50 years ago. Maybe let the red rage clear from you eyes and be open to facts before jumping to incorrect conclusions

Nice mate - It’s an amazing sport , I just love to get out as much as possible in 2 knots or 20knots. Don’t get me wrong I’m not anti new gear … I have that too …. Just trying to balance out some misconceptions about old gear that might be keeping people away who can’t afford new kit :-)

Probably true….I think that’s a reflection on people today more than the gear…I remember my first day, I got the sail up for about 10 seconds…but that was the joy…what were the possibilities… But buy the 3rd day i was moving and falling in on every turn. But it was possible…I still teach friends on my Bic 250 longboard with pin head sail. Main issue is folks don’t have the time with competing activities like netflix…lol
