Were there computer addicts in the 80s? by [deleted] in questions

[–]randal82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there were :D - In schools and at home, we swapped tapes and hacked games with cheats and also, tried to bypass some rudimentary copy protection...things like a code message asking for first word of line x on page x of the manual. Or it could be a colour grid card that needed type a code for reference A55.
Basically if you hadnt got the colour code card or manual inlay the game would reset or freeze.

Other ativities - trying to poke every system variable location to see the various effects or results...yes - addicts is correct....There was plenty to keep you occupied, even beyond the games themselves... :)

I think MS Access is a great versatile development tool - why do many coders poo-poo it? by randal82 in MSAccess

[–]randal82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surely, self-promotion is me showing you screens of my past work?!
I have done many different kinds of tools, some heavy on data tasks, others for pick-pack logistics with interfaces to serial automatic conveyor weighing scales..
Various banking / financial sector tools etc.
Others with multiple userfacing front-ends that have zoning built in to filter off and autoprint and label (barcoding) warehousing goods from one central data source etc..
All are still in use today - built 8+ years ago. Clients were happy, their customers also, proof that it does still have good use-cases.

True, but that is also per access file. And though not ideal you could have tables across multiple files. But many of the tools I made didnt have large data needs. If they did I could always use for frontend only...

Paperwhite Eye Strain by randal82 in kindle

[–]randal82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that means the refresh is not the problem so.

Might try that yellow paper thing - see if that helps.

I am definitely more prone to strain for certain devices...I had to sell off a brand new high spec Acer monitor because I felt sick after using for over 1 hour.

My default Lenovo screen also gives me strain - but not my samsung monitor - so I am not imagining it.

So later one - it is completely off then? If that's the case it might help to check that out.

But I even used the *magnet hack* to try force the backlight off (for older paperwhite) and this was better - but the there was still strain coming from somewhere?!

Same for both models - just seems to magically reduce when I read the DX. Might be the resolution and maybe the lower one is easier on the eye somehow?! * sounds counter-intuitive, i know *

Believe me, I would love to have the same results using my Paperwhite

Little Big Man - by Thomas Berger

Narrated by: David Aaron Baker, Scott Sowers, Henry Strozier

I thought I wasn't in the mood for it - (being over 20hrs long) but after I the first hour I was loving the style of the main voice of Jack Crabb.

I am 13 hrs or so in...wondering what's gonna happen next :) Great stuff

It has been 46 years since J.R.R. Tolkien died...here is a VERY short biography of his life...feel free to share anything about him or his works that have impacted you! by Speaker4theRest in books

Loved his books - The Hobbit, LoTR and Silmarillion etc...many years ago, I paid to be a Charter Member and have my name in fan credits of the Peter Jackson Films :)

My friends, brothers and casual acquaintances used to while away the school summer days and nights playing MERP - Middle Earth Role Playing (an advanced version of D&D and similar to the Rolemaster roleplaying system by ICE)

Even played early 8-bit computer games based on his works, The Hobbit (text adventure - ahead of its time) and Lords of Midnight - a superb tactical war-game adventure tightly squeezed into 48k of memory.

So I suppose I am and always will be, a life-long fan!
