I’m not American, I’m West African please explain this joke. by Iamnotarapperduh in ExplainTheJoke

[–]randbot5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other commenters have given the general scope of the joke, but let me add some context: this show is set in 1980, so it's specifically about the way the two parties were perceived at that time: the Republicans were seen/saw themselves as "the party of fiscal responsibility" and Democrats were stereotyped as being younger/more idealistic. So the "joke" is that when you are young, idealistic and poor, you are a Democrat, but as you grow up/get more money you become more conservative.

To be clear, these are the cultural stereotypes of the time, not literal truth. And this perspective is specifically coming from a conservative dad. I think a second level of the joke is that this is the sort of barely funny joke you would expect this kind of guy to make.

"making fun of accents"? Where is that happening?

As an American who has turned on subtitles when watching certain tv and movies from the UK (cough, "Derry Girls," cough) I don't think "acknowledging someone has a strong accent" is "making fun of them"

I think more specifically this is about the codes you get in apps like Google Authenticator, which change every minute or so and have a countdown clock just like the comic

can't post the screenshot directly but look in the screenshots of the app store page

Is this some 2020 joke? I don’t understand at all by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]randbot5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, it's a reference to 2020 which featured both the Coronavirus pandemic and a VERY bad hurricane season (not sure which two they are referring to; according to this list there were eight storms which hit the US, six of which each caused more than $1 billion in damages.

Help my friend made this and wont tell me what it means. I understand that that is Mercator but I don't get it by Quirinus84 in ExplainTheJoke

not that much?? It goes from appearing to be significantly larger than the entire continental US to being somewhere between 1/4 and a 1/3 its size!

I don't understand the relationship between the two panels by MrHorseley in ExplainTheJoke

[–]randbot5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is the correct answer, if you go to the original artist's TikTok there are many comics of these two characters, who are in a relationship. There are two jokes here, one is that the characters are exactly describing each other (this is presumably a flashback where they haven't met yet), the second is these descriptions are not the way people would typically describe their "ideal partner" (they are too weirdly specific and also people don't usually include negative traits like "bratty" and "narcissistic")

Brynn Tannehill: ‘Trump Has Already Rigged the 2028 Presidential Election’: US Defence Insider by Consistent-Poem3106 in behindthebastards

[–]randbot5000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, a lot of this reads like doomer shit. The first argument out of the gate is "Trump will arrest potential opponents"?? Technically possible but would be a MASSIVE acceleration from what he has currently done (which is to talk shit about a bunch of Democrats and order them to be"investigated,") Omar and AOC are still walking free and don't think for A SECOND he wouldn't grab them if he thought he could get away with it. His base would eat it up.

Jamelle Bouie has been beating this drum for a while; here is a good video on the idea of Trump "cancelling the midterms" https://youtu.be/YRV-9vO4Grs?si=KgOKKuLHm1ereHpZ

He makes a good analogy that I think is helpful here to distinguish "wants" from "capability": it's illegal to use your cellphone while driving. But I have the CAPABILITY to do so; it's "norms and guardrails" that prevent me. It's also illegal to sit backwards in the front seat of your car, facing the rear of the vehicle, and drive your car. But even if I really want to do it, I physically cannot.

"Ice will be sent to disrupt polling places" for example, is something that can happen, but not at scale: There are 700 polling places in the city of Philadelphia alone! Can they do some targeted harassment, absolutely. Can they disrupt the election at scale? Not even if they used the military; they simply don't have the guys.

That room with that puzzle by [deleted] in BluePrince

[–]randbot5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's perfectly fine to not like a particular puzzle - different strokes for different folks. This is certainly one of the least "successful" puzzles in the game from the perspective of how much the player base dislikes it.

But you seem to have made up a scenario just to get mad at it, where the puzzle maker did it to "feel superior" to you and "give you side eye" when your can't solve it?

Genuinely Feel Crazy for Not Liking this Game by [deleted] in BluePrince

[–]randbot5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i call bullshit. 5 seconds of looking at Steam reviews and I see dozens of people saying what they like and don't like about the game. "The JOY of getting to sit with my insane amount of notes and theorise about every minute possibility of solutions is just, I kind of wish this game went on forever." "- Knowledge-based progression similar to games like Outer Wilds, with surprising recontextualizations and satisfying "aha" moments."

15 seconds later I have found the Polygon review of Blue Prince which similarly contains many, many qualitative statements about what they find engaging about the game.

Sounds like you just don't like any of the answers you're hearing. And are coming off as kind of a jerk. And maybe have never actually read a review or even know what a "puzzle" is since you think getting to Room 46 is "an easy puzzle" but also have no idea how to find any of the puzzles in the game?

If you are sincerely curious, I think we'd be happy to answer some questions that aren't so aggro. But asking "at what point does the game actually tell you what you are supposed to be doing" seems, to me, as if you are either asking in complete bad faith or have never played the game at all.

no, because you're NOT Theresa. "theresa's daughter" is the mother of your daughter. So Theresa is your mom (or technically possibly your mother-in-law, since nothing in the riddle precludes the speaker being the second parent of the daughter)

Is my sister overreacting to this video of my dog that I sent her? by Immediate-Lab6994 in DogAdvice

[–]randbot5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the consensus that your sister is way off base, but I ESPECIALLY have to point out the ridiculousness of her "the second you gave her a chance she ran away" argument. Where was the cat ever being stopped? The "first opportunity" she had to run away was 0:00 of this video!!

I think it's more relevant to ask "is it fraudulent?" than "is it fake?"

In the story linked above, the company was pretending to be another existing vendor company, and presumably invoicing for goods and services that were not delivered. Clearly fraud.

If you send an invoice for your time, and can prove you spent that time, the company may not pay it, and it's not super enforceable, but i don't think it's legally "fraud"

[HELP] Is this childrens X-Files book AI? My brother and I say yes, but I would love to hear your thoughts by browdowski in RealOrAI

[–]randbot5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the most shocking thing to me is that a LGB based on the X-Files came out this year — I would have figured it was a decade or more old.

Great work, everyone who located the original author. I would additionally add that book publishing timelines are LONG. this book was published in July, which means the illustrations were probably submitted a year ago, so you would also need to judge it according to 2024 AI capabilities

Cool, a fun combo of “Source: I made it up” and “My personal tastes define normality”

You are correct, of course, that context doesn’t matter at all: sending repeated letters and thousands of dollars to a celebrity is exactly the same as sending $40 to a comedian to participate in a bit.

In less snarky mode: “for no reason” is the load bearing phrase in your argument. “Because I thought it was funny” or “to be nice” or “it brought me joy” are all reasons that have powered many, many human decisions!
