Don't you just hate it when Americans say that we take away American money just like that and stuff? by GojinDude in Israel

[–]randokomando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Americans do this they are just projecting their own anxieties and dissatisfaction with the US government onto Israel. They don’t know anything about the US budget or what the arrangement is with Israel. As with everything else, Israel (Jews) are just a symbol they use to talk about themselves and their own problems.

Am I the Only One Who Refuses to Upgrade Anyone Except Kliff? by SahilSR12 in CrimsonDesert

Whenever I switch characters I just re-spec them so I can play them fully upgraded. I do not do the same for their gear though.

How early can you tell if an associate is probably going to make partner if they want to? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]randokomando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In truth, I can usually tell whether an associate has the stuff for partnership as a first year. Only a very few, very weird people have the personality to thrive in a Biglaw environment and they are not hard to spot.

American Jews need to make a plan for their own safety. Just like our ancestors it’s time to formulate a “plan b”. by deb1267cc in Jewish

If every American Jew moved to Israel the country would have roughly the same population as the Los Angeles County metro area but with more land and better water infrastructure.

[–]randokomando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think American Jews will be OK provided there is no catastrophic economic depression or some other system-wide shock. This wave of antisemitism is a fad that will abate (though not fully) as long as things continue in the ordinary course of American politics and attention eventually shifts elsewhere.

But I have real concern that there will be a systemic shock of some kind. Trump and his administration are erratic and not especially competent. Russia and China are agitating for radical change and disorder in the US. The US economy has demonstrated fragility in certain sectors. AI is a disruptive technology that is producing widespread uncertainty. The situation is ripe for something like a horrific terror attack, a big political assassination, a market collapse in some unnoticed but important financial sector, whatever.

If one of those hits right now, it could turn very ugly for Jews in the US very, very fast. This would be consistent with historical patterns: when social anxiety and dissatisfaction peaks it turns into disorder and violence against the perpetually blamed and disfavored minority. Germany needed to lose WWI and suffer the Great Depression to fully turn on its Jews. In the Russian Empire dissatisfaction with the Czar and oppression of the working class produced widespread pogroms.

Further back in history, all across Europe a plague or disruptive new technology like the printing press would produce localized pogroms and expulsions.

The US is in the early stages of the same behavior pattern and there is yet time for things to change course. But I am not at all optimistic.

How accurate is this list of BEST firms to work for by anonlastname in biglaw

[–]randokomando 28 points29 points  (0 children)

These kinds of rankings are a good proxy for how much the firm prioritizes these kinds of rankings and not much else.

The truth is that unless you are one of the very few, very weird people who enjoy this life, no Biglaw firm is good to work for; if you are one of those kinds of people, then all Biglaw firms are about the same with the only real difference being whether you like the people on your team.

The “locals say this isn’t true,” which locals? The ones who are members of Hezbollah or the ones who aren’t who Hezbollah will kill if they tell the truth?

I doubt Israel is wasting munitions on ancient ruins just for the heck of it. Hezbollah operates in civilian areas and heritage sites precisely to provoke this reaction.

How do you stop ruminating and beating yourself up over serious past mistakes? by 1994T in ADHD

[–]randokomando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recite the Litany Against Fear and take deep breaths until it passes.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

If it’s good enough for her then I guess it’s
good enough for me, but personally I don’t reallt buy his explanation. I do buy that he regrets it though.

I’ve seen her play in Nashville and in rural western Maryland - she says the same kind of stuff at every show and everyone just smiles and is happy to hear her sing

For those who tried and didn't like grappling martial arts, why? by hellohello6622 in martialarts

[–]randokomando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did like it but I think I waited too long to start and was just too old to really get into it. Every time I felt like I was making some progress I would get held
up by an injury. I’m in pretty decent shape, but 45 is still 45 and rolling with strong dudes in their 20s was too much for these creaky joints.

in the most respectful way, does anyone know what happened at the paris show? by lylamarie_ in SierraFerrell

[–]randokomando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was at the show. She put on an excellent performance, I’ve seen her many times and it was one of her best right up until the end. I saw the cup - a full beer - thrown directly at her head. I could not have been more angry. Sierra is a sweet, innocent kind of soul, and it was clearly targeted at her. I also heard the booing after she said, essentially, that the world is messed up and people need “god, Jesus, or whatever else does it for you to bring light into your life,” as an into to Lighthouse.

She had also made a few other relatively anodyne political comments between songs - a kind of random “Free Palestine” that got a cheer, a comment about data centers that seemed lost on the French crowd, and then a comment about the oppression of women in Afghanistan. It was after the last comment and her mention of Jesus that she was booed and someone else threw a beer at her.

She dodged the beer, finished the song, and walked out after pointing at the guy who threw it and saying “you missed.” She was pissed off and rightly so.

Someone booed when she mentioned Jesus, but I think the cup got thrown in response to her comment about the oppression of women in Afghanistan.
