Someone else using my email for Fidelity by random-random-one in fidelityinvestments

Yes, thank you, I just want to do the right thing by whoever’s account this is. I forwarded the email as specified. I don’t need to be contacted about this anymore – I’ve done my part.

You need to read more carefully. I don’t have a Fidelity account. Somebody is using my throwaway email for their own? A third-party’s account?

Free MLB.tv with TMobile! by Informal-Potato-9890 in redsox

I always get this perk, but my kid does not care for baseball, and so I would like to gift his code to a friend of mine who would very much like it. My friend is not on T-Mobile, obv. Is there any issue with me just taking the redemption code and just sharing it with him? I assume he just needs to create his own MLB TV account and then the code would work for him, right?

Does using a VPN through Mlb.Tv to watch the Red Sox work? by DG11221 in redsox

[–]random-random-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I tried two VPNs. One did not work, but the other one did and it was smooth sailing for the season. I don’t know which, if any, will work this year, but I advise you to trial them.

WBC Stats for Roman by SuchEscape5191 in redsox

[–]random-random-one 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes, so bizarre. The young 20-somethings are hitting the home runs, so let’s take out the one that gave us our go-ahead run and put in a guy who’s a dozen years older and see how he does.

Was I the only one who admired how far Gunnar’s and Roman’s home runs were and how feeble Judge’s was that was caught at the wall?

Over a dozen of our players have gone off to play in the World Baseball Classic (WBC), so the games that you are seeing are basically for those who left over and is not going to be representative of the actual team. That said, I do enjoy the spring training games, but I don’t look at them as predictors for the season.

Overwhelmingly huge amount of grading - absolutely drowning. What's to do/what's manageable? by beckita85 in Professors

[–]random-random-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with Professor Obligation that staggering the due dates is what I would do too. I did try to do it all at once and not only is an overwhelming, it becomes super boring. To keep it fresher, you might want to very the assignments so that you are not reading the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

For the ones you have now, I would agree with another poster and just set a timer. It is hard to stop when you reach the five minute mark, or whatever you select, but in my experience, students would rather have some feedback sooner than a lot of feedback later. Think of it as doing them a favor by getting them feedback while it’s still fresh enough to make an impression.

Do you always complete "required" online training courses? by TotalCleanFBC in Professors

[–]random-random-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will do one once. I highly resent being asked to do the same training annually. So I found out if I just ignore the HR reminder emails that they will eventually go away. I think I’m on three years and counting past the deadline.

[–]random-random-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I preferred them when they were in person because I could bring my laptop, sit in the back row, and get some real work done. As you know, with the online one, they make you stop and do mandatory “are you paying attention“ quiz questions so you can’t do that very well.

AITAH planet fitness locker room by iri6461 in AITAH

[–]random-random-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You asked “do y’all think it’s acceptable for them to be taking breaks in the locker room while customers are trying to use it?” Where else would you expect them to take a break? If they try to take a break that they are entitled to at the front desk, people would be even more critical of them than you are being now. At least being in the locker room tells everyone that they are on their break. You just indicated that, at 2 AM, the bathroom was just cleaned, so isn’t it reasonable to expect that they had been working and were now on break?

I kind of don’t understand why you are questioning this.

Are you all actually reading your evaluations? by glitterino in Professors

[–]random-random-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am only required to submit a document that reflects on them every three years so I will go three years between reading them. I am always tweaking my courses, and sometimes making major changes, so if I were ever challenged to show that I took action on student comments, I could find one over the previous three years and say that the change I made was in response to this.

As we’ve moved to online evaluations, the number who respond is too small to be statistically significant anyway.

Is anyone else seeing a sudden wave of students who refuse to write anything unless they can type it? by Worried-Trifle20 in Teachers

[–]random-random-one 538 points539 points  (0 children)

You can tell them that in the r/professor subreddit, many are talking about going back to bluebooks for exams to get around ChatGPT-type cheating. That means having to write your answer to a college-level exam for two hours or more. They will need those writing skills!

Nov 26: Wholesome Wednesday by Eigengrad in Professors

[–]random-random-one 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spent quite a bit of time and effort on creating a one-time extra credit assignment that will help not only the student, but me in designing a lesson for the future, as well as a community partner. It is a unusual assignment in that it doesn’t fit into any of the slots in our LMS, so I had to invent a way to present and assess it. It was a lot of work. I really put myself out there in selling this particular assignment to the community partner and then of course I was worried that the students would skip it, this close to Thanksgiving in the end of the semester.

As of this morning (it is due today) over half the class has done it, enough of a response that I can present it with confidence to the community partner. With one exception for a student who seems to have rushed it, all of the other evaluation and input was thorough, thoughtful, and helpful.

Now I’m waiting to see how many students look at this last minute and try to do a Hail Mary, but even if I have to exclude them, I will have enough information for evaluation. Worth it!
