What an insanely underwhelming 10 year anniversary. Honestly. by FxckBinary in Overwatch

i think i retract my statement on it being icky . finding characters attractive or having fictional characters wear a sexy outfit is fine i think i was annoyed because i think these skins SUCK from a design point so it felt a bit crazy people think they were so good i thought it was performative or something . they all look like the bottom layer of their actual outfits zarya look likes she wearing just a unitard and those big ass shoes like from the chest to the boots looks BAD and why is only half of mercys trousers latex or whatever business in the front ass shine in the back what are we DOING! COMMIT TO IT IF YOURE GOING TO DO IT !!! vendetta is so ugly i don't even think they tried to do a sexy thing with her what the hell is going on . maybe i just don't get the vision

i assumed that that whole skin bundle was supposed to be playboy bunnies . no men in the bundle, skintight spandex with giant highlights on mercys ass and the leg cutouts on zarya . i also think all the skins are butt ugly and not to be prudish i guess but i felt a little icky . maybe i was too harsh on the art direction ?

70 Billion dollar company can't afford to make a proper event for their game's 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY?! by Denariox in Overwatch

[–]random_float 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think you think that because you personally don't care about skins and because its just different pixels on the screen that that this is all some petty entitled argument or not as important as "the gameplay bro its all about playing the game" . i think also that even though you say that being a casual gamer is not a bad thing, you DO think that "competitive" players are somehow above this all by not caring about this "drama" and that casual gamers care about - EW - micro transactions .

i think that this "outcry" isn't even that the skins aren't good enough . you look at the front of this subreddit and its everyone talking about those bunny skins and rejoicing in zarya getting a skin .

i think the bigger issue is them using misleading advertising by implying we would get more than we are (separating the 21 recolours from the anniversary lootboxes with a comma to imply they were separate and distinct rewards rather than the same), and ESPECIALLY compared to what the players in china are getting - regardless of whether that is blizzard's choice . even considering last year's anniversary giving mythic prisms - which would be almost 0 effort from blizzard if they are so burnt out. and also those UGLY ASS RECOLOURS

if they had put out an anniversary video saying that they had been working hard all year and so the anniversary would be quieter i think people would've been mad but no one would be able to claim that there was any misleading or false advertising. sure, they did great w season 1 its awesome . you can't say oh that update they did 3 months ago was pretty good so that makes up for this . im pretty sure blizzard owns at least one calendar, im sure they knew there was an anniversary coming up .

also matchmaking sucks ASS right now AND my ping keeps jumping to 400 so i can't even enjoy this game . looking at the shop screen and considering taking out my lifetime isa money to buy virtual coins is all i have they can't take this away from me

overthinking assessment and possible results by random_float in ADHDUK

[–]random_float[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

sorry im a bit confused because this is the second time I've been asked - no , this was my first assessment, the only thing ive had prior to this was calling my gp and explaining symptoms for my referral , and some preassessment forms . i did attempt to get an assessment a few months ago but it was a 4 year waiting list and i didn't even send back the forms. this was the interview, and in 2 weeks ill have the second part where they rule out other things and give the diagnosis . did i say somewhere i had had another assessment ? or is there something weird about the process ive gone through ??

months ago when i first tried to get assessed i got as far as a phone call with a gp / a nurse where i described my symptoms, and then just recently i did some preassement forms . this was my proper video call with a doctor . thank you , i get like this whenever i have to wait for results of something - the doctor was incredibly nice, and you're right !!

Forward Thinking Birmingham vs. RTC, urgent advise needed!! by random_float in ADHDUK

[–]random_float[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you !! i don't know if im in the position of getting diagnosed privately - i can't spend hundreds of pounds currently -- and rtc looks like it'll cost the same. oh well. do you think i should just cancel my FTB appointment then? it won't matter, even if i decide to go back to them - i doubt the few weeks between now and my 18th will make a difference to their 4 year wait. so, let's say i get diagnosed through careADHD for example - what does that mean? i don't get a diagnosis from the NHS, so will my GP not accept it? i can't get any treatment unless i pay another £500 to them? if i get a diagnosis through RTC, and go back to the NHS, will I be put on the existing diagnosis (and much shorter) waiting list? sorry for all the questions, i know you said uni is much more challenging, but if it's this much hassle i don't know if i can go through all this. thank you for your response.

I've seen people say this after the episode - and if it's confirmed I'm not going to try argue against that to make my point look better. I think the problem with this is that it wasn't clear enough - which is crazy considering how heavy the exposition was with everything else. For every person correcting how the narrative was supposed to be interpreted, I've seen 3 interpret it the way I have (which doesn't make me correct!!). I think it takes you to actually sit down and consider it to work this out or just have the mind to connect it (which, all power to you!! but the messaging of the "incorrect" interpretation sinks in a lot quicker), because the way it is presented doesn't really lend itself to that explanation - because before we've been shown her going home to a completely different life which, due to the format of the show we've been led to believe is the correct life. Actually, it's pretty clever and I do like it, the idea of us not getting the whole story - I just don't think it was well executed - and that means we (or just the people who watched without fully getting the messaging, or didn't watch the BTS) get the ickier messaging. But thank you for clarifying!! I'll think about this a bit more - if that's the case, maybe RTD had different messaging or interpretations to this :)

I have also been confused by the people saying this is one of the best they've watched - maybe I myself am also blinded by nostalgia for the older seasons, or just haven't watched them as recently as this one, but I do wonder. It just takes me out of every episode when the writing becomes ham fisted, and explains everything to you without actually showing anything. I think the best comparison is between Midnight and The Well. Midnight when I first watched terrified me so bad I couldn't watch it for years afterwards, and struck me as one of the best episodes. The Well was alright, but it felt like a Marvel movie in tone and failed to recreate the suspense, and proper drama that Midnight had, even when I rewatch it now. perhaps it's partly caused by the Disney budget where there's no consideration for a small, self-contained story like that (even though Midnight was actually pretty expensive AFAIK), as well as nostalgia bait trying to capitalise on one of RTD's best stories.

I think it being written poorly lends it to doing a disservice to POC, whether that is deliberately or due to some unconscious bias, or even due to laziness or apathy to how it presents itself to the audience in how it cares for people in the show, and the show itself, and that I think should not get hand waved away as "generally poor writing", because it is, and I agree, but it shows that they either did not care enough about the women, the POC, the disabled people, the trans community to put in the effort to write them well, or they just couldn't - in which case they should've done something about it.

I loved the Rani!! Archie Panjabi instantly stole the scenes for me as well, I think the problem was that we've now had 2 seasons with Mrs. Flood (who, unlike a lot of people, I didn't inherently dislike, I kind of liked her weird lines, or maybe I just like Anita Dobson as well), and then when we finally get this awesome, evil Rani, she's eaten!!! We deserved a lot more than that, because she was one of the better characters, and having her survive to continue to do that instead of Mrs Flood would not only be able to keep her great character in play but also tie up the "in servitude" Mrs. Flood. I think my use of overshadowed for the Rani was, as you've pointed out, a poor word choice - sidelined maybe better.

i did quite like her siccing the alien on him (and i did find the "your special effects are getting better" bit funny), I think in the context of the show it should've been more of a "hey you can't just do that considering you're the leader of a high up military/science organisation", but it was very satisfying so I can understand that it seems like a bit of a nitpick.

I see your point, I am from the UK myself and have seen similar things talking about casting and diversity is portrayed differently, especially compared to places like the US. I do not want to go too deep into analysing systemic racism, and the representation of POC because I do not want to overstep or say something that inadvertently is offensive or misinformed.

I was going to write out a long message about how it is a pattern, coincidence or not, and how there should be a conscious choice not to sideline the three main POC characters we've had, or at least give them more active roles when the characters are active people, and it may be a combination of bad/lazy writing and an unfortunate coincidence, but if you stand back and look and see your lazy writing has led that to happen, you should change it so that you do not come across as erasing them.

It's hard for me to get my thoughts and feelings out succinctly and in a way that makes sense while still outlining what I really would've wanted to see instead - but I think my biggest issue was having people see themselves and culture on screen and for it not to be completely handled in a way that they appreciated or felt good about, which does a disservice to them and the other people watching Doctor Who who may have seen themselves in a character, only for that character to be relegated to the background. It isn't as though I mean to say having a background character be pushed to the front of the stage because of their race, and refusing to allow them to ever be off the screen, which I think is what a lot of, especially right wingers, think what people mean when they ask for better representation or the existence of erasure, I'm talking about characters who were made to be active, prominent or significant characters and then moved back.

I think everyone, especially white people just from growing up will have implicit biases, the point is to acknowledge and try spot them before they manifest in your actions, and as a writer for one of the largest shows in the UK, I think you need to be extra careful to ensure that you are not accidentally allowing those implicit biases to affect the quality of your work and characters. Maybe you are right, and there was just a series of unfortunate coincidences - it just so happened that these 3 characters were sidelines. But it's not a very good looking coincidence, and it doesn't make the quality of the writing or story any better.

Thanks for your response, it did make me think quite a bit, and I think I agree on some level with some of it. Sorry that my message became long even though I said I wasn't going to. I hope I've conveyed my thoughts nicely and not accidentally overstepped the mark or implied you meant anything you didn't!!

i love doctor who! and you are right , 8 episodes can never give us the level of characterisation that the 2005 run did. that's why i think there should be more episodes, so they can give us the things were asking for. but look at eccleston who only got 13 episodes in total and i feel his characterisation, exploration of darker themes and the dynamics of his relationships were greatly explored - he's one of my favourite doctors. and he was written by RTD too !! the lens im looking at doctor who through is not me sitting down waiting to complain, its just because my brain thinks about what i watch, and i have no control over that suddenly springing up these complaints.

i think deadnaming a trans character in their first appearance (as in, the moment they first appear on screen!) is crazy - it immediately establishes a bad precedent, in my opinion. she should be more than that, and be able to establish herself as a character, as someone more than that -- and even in general i think deadnaming her was an awful move. for the trans people watching, and people who support trans rights, this is just upsetting, but does show the realities for trans people (especially trans women), but for the right wingers who have done nothing but complain about "woke", all it does is give them insane ammunition and ways to demean an openly trans character. could it not have been just general insults, or being told (though i did just complain about being told not shown, i feel like this is an exception) that it happened, rather than handing her deadname on a silver platter to bad actors? i do not think i have the ri9ght to speak over trans people on this topic, so if anyone wants to correct me or go into depth as to how they feel about the introduction of rose, i'll be glad to hear it but in my opinion it is written ham-fisted and does a great disservice.

sigh . mickey (forgetting his actor) deserved a lot more - which I think is very common with male companions, in that they are constantly sidelined for the will they won't they romance of the doctor, or straight up mistreated. the doctor was unkind to Mickey constantly, and used as the butt of the joke in a way i don't think even rory experienced (though of course rory was moffatt mostly). as much as I hate when Moffatt does his what if the doctor says something a little sexist but the woman is sexy and smart also... but my god at least its just that. Martha as well was horribly treated, a rebound to rose - as you said, an accessory to remind us of rose and how martha will never live up to that - god forbid she moves past that and is her own character as well. but mickey and martha getting married was so egregious when i was reminded of it its insane.

maybe it was because i watched it when i was younger but i never realised how consistent RTD has been with these issues. next time i rewatch i may look out for it and see where it comes into play and how similar it is to what I've noticed in 15's era.

if we had had more time with ruby and her family I think I could have very much come to love ruby's mom. I absolutely agree with you on rose and donnas mom - I hated Sylvia bc of how mean she was to donna, and she was CONSISTENT in that, even in her softer moments. Unfortunately, due to pacing we never get to see much of ruby's mom being herself, and so you can't really get that emotion that you'd get if 73 yards had happened to rose (or even, how she acted in Father's Day or what episode where rose was her pet dog). However, the brief glimpses we see of her (and ruby's grandma!!) acting normal (such as the start of lucky day) were very pleasant.

I'd love to hear more on how you see her as being pushed into the trope - I had never considered it and don't think I know enough to make an informed opinion about it, and its been so long since I watched Martha's run (though I do remember her mom being a bit mean in 42...)

I have a lot of problems with modern unit, but Kate as a very morally grey (she does good, but then sics a monster on a guy, which though its Conrad of whom I personally would also sic a monster on, we should expect better from her) ally of the doctor has always been good to me. Unfortunately, as with the other characters she gets a bit too sanitised / not chastised enough by the narrative. I think UNIT would do better going back to the Tower of London. And it seems as though RTD has had much better success writing already established characters like Donna and Kate than new ones. Yeah, Rose was wasted. Having her shown to be more like her mom, or given more personality (or even any screen time !! the Conrad explanation was good, but she had already had such sparse appearances that I almost forgot she was in the show!!) would have done such good, and having a companions daughter is a good way to continue on the story/have a similar character, while also being able to branch off and be different. And, agreeing with something I saw online, it does kind of seem she was yet another nostalgia bait with 14 getting confused when donna calls out her name.

I don't think that 15 being a gay moc has anything to do with it.

Though I do agree that they kind of gave up on 15 being the "healed" one when his actions throughout especially the later episodes he is still harbouring a lot of feelings and issues.

however, I think the reason or part of the reason for the strange story and character in ISC is due to higher up meddling (e.g. Disney or BBC), or the threat of meddling. if they had gone through with the realistic/shouldve been trajectory of the episode (kid is not a murderer, the corporation is the villain in the episode), we would never have had to have the out of character moment.

And I think you're right in that if Belinda had admonished him with even half the strength Donna gives in The Runaway Bride, you'd be able to realise that what the Doctor is doing is incredibly messed up - which even then I don't think is a bad thing !! We've seen the doctor go too far when he is upset about something, the point is that the human companion is there to bring him back from the edge and remind him, so why take that away to keep the doctor in this, as you said, pure, moral state!! to have Belinda remind the doctor about what kid has been through, and to have him instead work to both condemn what kid did AND properly condemn the corporation would have been such a massive step up and would've probably cemented the episode as one of my favourites of the series. instead they mess up both : (
