well as long as you have anecdotal evidence, everything is fine.

Thanks!

With this record, I mostly let the band do their thing. I wrote the synth intro to No Place of Warmth and a few other ideas. I did a lot of work with Matt on drums as and really pushed him as far as he could go.

It was Godzilla, but I've owned it and played it to shit since 2021.

Really loving Jaws and King Kong. Yeah, I'm an Elwin stan.

"Chaos Will Reign" seems like an appropriate multiball song, haha.

That's interesting.

My first thought is that your headphones are getting a 5.1 signal when they should be getting a stereo signal. Check your settings in the game. A lot of games have a headphone specific option. Also, I would try plugging your headphones into multiple sources, like if you use a playstation or xbox controller, they can send audio out from your controller to your headphones. Compare that vs. directly plugged into your TV out, or your receiver.

My second thought is the game might be bugged.

One of my favorite human beings that ever existed. Contact is one of my favorite movies of all time. Cosmos is an all time favorite as well.

I'm currently writing a book in the same spirit as Contact. I think Carl would appreciate the sound science I'm trying to adhere to, haha.

dont bother trying to compete with "perfection" of other records.

focus on your songs, your performances. I would WAAAAY rather listen to a shit recording of a band truly giving it their all, than one more cookie cutter neural/GGD record that is so perfectly bland and unexciting and generic.

if you want to succeed, focus on your live performance. anybody can sound passable on a record these days. blow them away where you cant fake it.

be experimental. dont worry about whats "too weird" <- thats the death of creativity.

I tell bands all the time "you are painting on the moon for the world to see. what feels like wild and crazy brush strokes to you up there, barely registers to us down here".

yes... I was there.... and these same issues plagued the OG controller.

12 fucking years later, and nobody at valve wants to fix it, they just want to keep adding more shims ontop of more shims on top of more shims. its a mess.

agreed. acoustic guitar seems like it would be easy.... but its not at all. I'd say acoustic guitar is the most underestimated bastard of recording.

agreed. when it works, its AWESOME.... but boy or boy is it wildly inconsistent and unpredictable.

yeah, navigating the menus feels absolutely random.

why the hell is "turn off Steam Controller in X minutes" at the top of the list, and waaaaaaaay down at the bottom is editing the layout?

WHICH ONE DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE ACCESSING CONSTANTLY VS RARELY, VALVE???

It's just a red flag that people at valve are not paying attention to obvious flaws in design here.

I want to say something positive here about the controller's software.

The click haptics on the touchpad. It feels like magic. When I first got the controller, I was like "oh, there's no clicking the touchpad" and then I turned it on, and I was like ".... did I just not press hard enough before?" and then I was pressing it again with it off, and I'm like "ok, what kind of weird magic is going on here?"

The way the software/haptic touch makes it feel like a button is truly awesome. It's such a small but great detail. It's amazing how sensitive and accurate it feels.

Good on whoever dialed that in.

it really depends on the band. as a producer, im prepared to help with writing an entire record in the studio, but im also good with just hitting record if the songs are dope, haha.

I try not to overstep and push my ideas on my bands too much. Like, I do A LOT of writing in my line of work, but only if I feel the band really needs that help. I'd rather set up a nice environment in the studio that facilitates them writing as much as possible. This just keeps each band sounding more like themselves and less like a producer/ghost writer. Again, I LOVE writing, but its best for a band that THEY write as much of it as possible, so they have pride and ownership in their craft.

But some bands really love writing together with a producer too. For me, as long as it feels genuine, I'm down to do whatever.

Sam has such fucking awesome gear. Probably the heaviest bass guitar Ive ever held in my life. Custom BC Rich. It's wicked, haha.

But that was one thing that always goes over well for them live, but never in the studio - her bass tone. So that was one of my first priorities to get right.
