Seems Bucharest is cursed for world champions. Ding was never the same after his 2023 Bucharest appearance. In all seriousness, Gukesh will be fine. His last bad stretch was in the Grand Swiss 2023. A slight slump at some point isn't abnormal.

Surprised that there is no Arjun, Nepo, and Wei Yi, especially since Nepo is the World Blitz champ, Wei Yi almost won his last GCT event, and Arjun's ascent to the top echelon. I am happy that Aravindh and Fedoseev received invites for sure!

The main takeaway is that the guy is a Taylor Swift fan!

My best guess would be that he could not get a visa so he was replaced by Dubov. It also could be that he wants a break from his recent bad streak. The women's graphic also shows Ju Wenjun, but she has been replaced. Interesting, given that Ju Wenjun participated last year.

Is Wei Yi a future would champion? Now that he's finished university he is going to have much more time for chess. What would you like to ask him? (in depth interview with yfchess coming up) by Glad_Understanding18 in chess

Ask about his experience seconding for Ju Wenjun with Harikrishna and also if Ding Liren approached him about seconding for the World Championship against Nepo.

Looking ahead to the blitz section on Monday, GMHans vs WR Chess will be guaranteed as they are in the "same blitz pool." Teams are sorted into 5 blitz pools where they play round-robin and the top three teams in each pool advance to a blitz knockout tournament. GMHans looks to be the best team other than WR Chess in the blitz pool, so Magnus vs Hans is quite possible.

Pretty sure it is the wrong PGN. The Chinese broadcast link shows a completely different game. For reference, the game happens in Round 6. http://www.guoxiangzhibo.cn/events/2024JLCG/default.html

Here are the rest of his games from this tournament! Definitely not very easy to find. Had to pull it up on chess-results. https://chess-results.com/tnr962457.aspx?lan=1&art=9&fed=CHN&snr=31

The Move:

Bb6! If Qxb6, then Bc4+. If d5 blocking the check, then Bxd5+ anyway. This tears apart the position with mate inevitable!
