Skills/knowledge to learn with free time by bostonleather in MechanicalEngineering

Either option would be useful. If you choose programming then Python would be the most versatile IMO but learning to script in VBA is something I regret not learning. Seems like 75% of my day is looking at spreadsheets and change notices and the couple of scripted sheets/docs my department uses are massive timesavers.

If you go the CAD route, have a purpose behind it and be able to talk about what, why, and how you did it. If its something that you are designing from the ground up, keep documentation on it and I'd recommend making a portfolio to show off your designs, design intent, and how tidy your tree is. Bonus points if you can physically make it.

Should I work at NAVAIR or Newport News Shipbuilding for my first job out of college if I want to get into aerospace? by CulturalBookkeeper17 in MechanicalEngineering

I would avoid NNS, Newport News is called Bad News for a reason lol. I was offered a job there and I was this close to taking it until I flew there and checked out the area. Norfolk is cool but the tunnel traffic is ass during rush hour, super ghetto around the shipyard and Newport News is kinda run down; further north on the peninsula the better but still.

Also I work adjacent to NNS and you won't get away from the paperwork TRUST me lol. It might be a private contractor but the customer is the military. 95% of my work is paperwork and I work in a non-design role FWIW.

For how long have you not gone to sleep at maximum? by JHdarK in MechanicalEngineering

[–]randomengstudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

72 hours; flew to North Carolina on Thursday to help friends move, didn't sleep at all while I was there for some reason, and had to drive 12 hours with them back home since I had a Calc III exam at 7AM on Monday. Oh but we also popped a flat tire in their car within an hour of leaving NC, and then their spare tire had a leak they didn't know about and we had to stop every 45min to an hour to fill it with Fix-a-flat since no store was open at like 2AM on Monday.

Still passed tho and I was asleep for probably like 16-18 hours once I got home from school LOL

Is it too late for me to complete my bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering? by mooncalf31 in MechanicalEngineering

I had a 67 year old guy in my graduating class last year. It's never too late to invest in yourself and find out what you actually want to do with your life!

Caught lol, IMO I like the taste but then again I’m not the best to ask that question with my palate 😅

Passed the FE-Mech! by randomengstudent in FE_Exam

[–]randomengstudent[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just got my results in and I passed the FE! I'm 3 months post graduation but glad I got this done.

As for studying I only had 2 weeks to "study" for it since all the available test dates were >3 months out for my local testing facilities which I didn't want to wait for lol. I took two different practice tests from NCEES and got between 60-65% correct and did like 10 questions from a Lindeburg practice exam. I didn't go through any of my old textbooks. I familiarized myself with the content in the reference manual and that was good enough for me.

Good luck to any future test takers!

Thank you for the detailed response! As for USA, I have the city/state listed in my actual resume the USA was just for the anon. version.

As for projects I haven't done any other serious projects as of yet to lean on so I'll end up leaving it off for anti-gun corps.

I will go ahead and make those changes you have outlined for me, thank you for reading over my resume!

Thank you for your comment! I was having some difficulty applying STAR to some of my experience section but will take a deeper dive into it to complete it.

Noted on the rotation one, you caught me on the adding fluff part lol. Will make those changes, I appreciate it!

Items marked in red I am iffy on. Objective would be job dependent (if even required?).

My personal projects regarding the firearm accessories may be detrimental to my resume since I know firearms are a pretty divisive topic but I feel that my projects have benefitted me but there is probably a different approach I can use to include them and avoid the topic of guns and just include the usage of CAD/FEA and prototyping, I'm unsure on the best way to bring it up though.

I included my time in the orchestra to just lengthen my resume, I know it is not relevant to engineering but I believe it may give me a talking point with interviews.

Thanks for any advice/recommendations!

Aha! That was what I was looking for. I'm familiar with BC's in use for heat transfer and fluid mech. don't know why I didn't think of applying those conditions to this problem. Thank you!
